Hello all! I currently have a homemade fabric mermaid tail, and i was wanting to add a dorsal fin to it! Has anyone ever done that? If so, could you tell me how and send pictures? Also, could you all send me pictures of all your dorsal fins so i can see the different designs?! Pleeeeaaase?? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Mermaid Jade the mest thing you can do is turn the tail inside out with a ruler mark a straigt line down the middle of the back it helps if you already have the fabric or length you desire for the dorsal before hand, you cut down the middle with the tail inside out place the dorsal fabric in between the now devided tail again the dorsal fabric should be in between the two halves of your tail like a sandwich sew it together with the tail inside out once you turn it around you should have a cute new dorsal. This method can be applied to all fin additions.

Are you asking about a stiff dorsal, like a dolphin?
Or floppy dorsals, like fish?

Floppy, like a fish :)

Cut your fabric dorsal our leaving about an extra inch at the bottom. Fold the bottom up 1/2 inch then make a seam close to the fold. One you have that done the dorsal base now will make sort of a T shape, stitch both sides of the T down onto your tail.

It would be helpful to figure out how long you want the dorsal fin to be. Fins that go all the way down the tail, for example, make a bend at the knees when you swim, and you might want to take note of that. If you want to prevent that, you could make the fin end before it reaches where your knees would be or create two fins, one for each half of the tail.
