Hello all :) i am sort of new to this website, but i am somewhat experienced in mermaiding and tailmaking. Except for the fact that i have no idea what a sequin tail is? Can you post pictures? How are they compared to fabric tails? How do you make them? Are they expensive to make? Im so clueless

Basically, a sequin tail is a relatively easy to make (though excessively time-consuming) tail that kind of seems to fit in between fabric and silicone on the 'durability' side of things, but probably exceeds both in rarity, time needed to make one, and uniqueness however probably costs less than a silicone to make (in $ anyway if you're not paying yourself for time). Hannah Fraser is famous for her breathtaking sequin tails and Kariel from Tails Of Art makes a very nice sequin-silicone hybrid.

The way it basically works is people usually start with a neoprene base (you can also use fabric but neoprene is better since it's a lot more durable and if you're going to put all this effort into it then you probably want it to last) and make a simple tail skin out of that. People usually put zippers in the back so it's easier to get into and you can make the fluke however you like, either full sequin or some opt for a silicone fluke hybrid. After that, you basically have to sit there and sew thousands upon thousands of sequins to the tail individually and that's essentially it. I'll try and find some pics for you :)

These are 2 of Hannah Fraser's tails which she makes herself by hand and are full sequin (though the second one has silicone fins and dosral (you can also see more if you go to her FB page I just grabbed the first 2 I saw)

And this is one of Kariel's tails, where she opts for a seqin body and a silicone fluke and fins.

Does Kariel sell those?! :swoon: Beautiful. The only problem I see with sequin tails is the sequin shedding I wouldn't know how to put them back on. How bad does sequin shedding get?

Yeah you can swim in those but you definitely lose scales. Sequin tails require a lot of maintenance

How bad the shedding is seems to depend on how rough the tail is treated, but it's unavoidable anyway. I think for repairing you just keep a lot of sequins around and sew them on whenever one falls off.

I have a sequin tail! Its on a scuba knit base and the fluke is painted instead of sequined. I glued the sequins with e6000. There are about 3000 or so on there. It does shed so you need to keep sequins around for maintenance. I just took her for a swim yesterday and lost about 10 sequins. Here's some pictures. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170522/2d7623982b64cc2cd4adbbd5cb4af4be.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170522/7b3f478535df351933943e79dcfc77c2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170522/9645a11bea6ea350c73ba2ed95205305.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170522/1208da90d33524a3be6b2b4c427f89f9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170522/2034d088ceb3b510779e44cc88bd8546.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170522/bf3a3b93658577ca61324d46951a97f5.jpg

Wow, Aria! That's gorgeous! I'll probably never have the patience to make one, but when I have the money some day, I'll definitely buy a sequin tail. They're so pretty and glittery!

I love sequin tails. I'm working on 2 at the moment. One is almost done. And I made a test patch for the other. I'm in love with them. I need to make a sequin tail for myself once I finish those.
