Hey everyone!

Back in October my team and I filmed for an underwater music video. The premise is all about the violin that was played during the sinking of the Titanic and the idea that heaven is underwater.

The musician is Heather Rankin, she is a celebrated Canadian singer who belonged to a group called "The Rankin Family'. It's an Irish/Celtic type group and her solo stuff certainly follows that line.

Here's the story in her own words (quoted) about the violin:

This violin and case belonged to Titanic bandmaster Wallace Hartley. It came to light in 2006 and was auctioned for 1.7 million dollars in 2013. It was recovered strapped to Hartley's body, buoyed mostly out of the water by his life jacket, and thus preserved in quite good condition. It was taken to Halifax by the Mackay-Bennett Cable Ship that recovered many of the Titanic's victims in April, 1912. Several newspaper articles listed the items recovered with Hartley, including a "music case." From Halifax the violin and its case was sent to Hartley's fiancée, Maria Robinson, who had given the violin to him, engraved with their names, as an engagement gift. The rest of Hartley's effects were sent with his body to his father. For decades Titanic historians did not know that the violin and the case had been given to Maria, they were only aware of the items Hartley's father signed for in Liverpool, as a record was kept of his receiving them. Thus the "music case" that was referenced in initial newspaper clippings remained a mystery. Titanic enthusiasts and scholars were divided about whether the case was reported mistakenly and the violin lost with the ship, or whether it had been lost or stolen between Halifax and Liverpool. Meanwhile, Maria never married and had no children, so she left the violin and its case to a bandmaster at a Salvation Army, who gave it to a music teacher, who gave it to a violin pupil. In 2006 it was found it in the attic of the pupil's son and it went through much authentication before being auctioned. My song "Titanically" is told from the perspective of the violin yearning to be returned to the man who loved and played it. The music video is being released on June 2, Hartley's birthday. It was directed by Thom Fitzgerald and it is a more fanciful exploration of the immortality of music, of the musician's spirit and of the enduring stories surrounding the Titanic. It features a Wallace Hartley kind of character, played by Callum Dunphy, who accompanies me through water, mud and time, continually playing his beloved violin.

Filming for the video was a real challenge. We got to work with an acclaimed Canadian director, Thom Fitzgerald. (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0280396/) No one in the group had any experience performing or filming underwater, except for the mermaids and some syncro swimmers.

So we filmed for 3 hours in the middle of the night, mermaids acting with sailors, doing stunts, and then helping the singer Heather underwater as she didn't know how to swim and was a bit uncomfortable. Sean ended up being hired on halfway through filming to be an official videographer when they realized his experience level! It was super cool.

Here are some of our candid behind the scenes photos:

The filming was really intense. The water was cold and very chlorinated so our eyes killed. (I almost went to the hospital after because they took so long to get better) This was my 4th time doing a music video but the 1st for Ama and Victoria. We used weights in the tails to help us all stay in the same level but with the repeated movements they wouldn't stay in place and we all ended up with HORRIBLE feet and ankle blisters when we were done. We were exhausted. It was 3+ straight hours of only coming up for air and to take direction. But it was super cool. We choreographed a bunch of tricks, kept the other actors secure underwater and brought them up for air, and managed through some hilarious accidents such as me swimming out of my wig.

This week I got to have a sneak peek at the music video and hang out with Heather. The video was better than I ever could of imagined and I was floored by how much we're featured. To me meeting Heather was a big deal, let alone working with her. I grew up doing musical theatre and choir and we ALWAYS did her songs. It was so cool to meet her as an adult. Also she told me all these stories I related to!

Here's a few photos from the release party:

If you'd like to preview the song you can do so here. It's very theatrical with Celtic undertones. It might not be everyone's "thing" but I think when you see it paired with the beautiful imagery it'll tell a story!

It's really beautiful. I *love* the song... that it's from the POV of the violin just really brings it home for me. As I child (in the 70s), I was in love with disasters at sea, people lost at sea, etc., and the Titanic was something I couldn't get enough of in documentaries, books, film, and even a replica of one newspaper from the day she went down. This song brought me to tears. I never did see the epic film that brought her back into popular thought, because I'm very careful these days with how I take in info about such a tragic event, but I am so glad I watched this!

For someone who wasn't comfortable with water, I think Heather did a great job. I never once thought she doesn't look like she knows what she's doing, maybe it fits the theme better, or such.

Anyway, bravo, it's so lovely.
