I'm wondering if any Canadian mers in the Alberta area (Edmonton especially) know of any indoor swimming pools that are monofin/tail friendly? There are many lakes I can visit to swim in, but I'm sure many of you can understand the appeal of swimming indoors on a colder day!

Hi Domino! I'm from BC myself but am part of the Canadian mermaid pod on Facebook! There are several Albertan mers on there and I have heard that they are out of luck for swimming in Edmonton, but you could ask! PM Nerdmaid Faith (@faithonthebass) on Facebook and I'll add your name to the group!

There is actually a few places that are tail friendly just not the pools that are run by the city. I go twice a week to the ymca downtown. Mostly sunday morning when not busy.

My pool in Airdrie allows tails but a swim test does need to be completed.

All the pools I whent too have a swim test for tails. In aug I am starting a mermaid school in Edmonton. It will be great to have a common place to be mermaiding with others. I would like to have a group made up before for the launch so stay tuned.

Yeah, a swim test is definitely a good idea. I've been to lots of pools where you need to take a test in order to swim in the deeper pools/use waterslides and diving boards, so it's nice to know that some pools are using that method for tails. It's good to know that there are pools that do that! I'll check that out for sure!

I'll be in contact with some pools around my area and see if they do tail tests; thanks for the heads up! I'd love to see a mermaid school in Edmonton so I'll definitely want to stay tuned to that! It would certainly be a wonderful experience to swim with some Edmonton mers. :)

To make it easy for you most pools do accept tails but any pool that is run and owned by the city is a no go but that may change once they see what I am doing at other locations around town.
Every sunday morning I go to the Don Wheaton YMCA with my tail and its a good deep pool with nobody to bump into.

Thank you very much for the information! I also hope that pools run and owned by the city will change their minds about tails in the future. I can see why they may be concerned about tails, but a little education can certainly go a long way. Thanks again!
