Very smart I think my first tail that I painted would have looked wayy better if I made a stencil. Your fabric tails are definitely inspiring, especially because I LOVE purple!

Thanks ^_^ My best scale work I feel is still my Lantern tail, which I used no stencil like I do on the others. Well, that is until I release images later of a finished Emerald Queen. ;)

Nice! Did you sequin the fabric yourself or is it already sequinned?

It's pre-sequinned. the fabric is just a mesh with sequins sewed to it. (why it has to be layered over spandex.) It's this stuff, only in black http://www.joann.com/performance-fabric---flapper-holo-sequin-black-poly/14285373.html
The fluke was originally longer, but I recently cut it down to fit the shape of my Aquarius and I've found myself much more satisfied with the shape

Nope, the sequins are a lot closer together, and are round. They can also move and shift, since they're only sewn on at the top. . . this also means I always shed a few whenever I go anywhere. xD

There is air in the fluke yes. But because it was evenly distributed I didn't mind the 3D effect it gave and left it :)

OMG! I so want to do this type of tail! I am patiently waiting for the new black Mahina merfin in my size... but would you mind sharing the trick or how you blended the fabric portion of your tail onto the Mahina? It does look like the Mahina, am I right? I found some lovely new scale patterns on Spoonflower.com, and I want to make a fabric tail with one seam zipper down the back, and make the fabric just blend right onto the fin like you have! Looks amazing! I love the whole ensemble you have put together there!
I have one other question for fabric tail MAKERS out there- do any of you ever use the swimsuit lining fabric inside the tails to smooth out the appearance of legs and keep you warmer? I also hear many spandex tails end up being see through, and using the lining fabric may keep it from letting the light shone through the tails...
Anyway, thanks for listening, and I hope to get answers to BOTH my questions!

I've got two tails so far. I'm in love with them for very different reasons! I'm still thinking of getting a third and doing product reviews once it comes in. I have had a few people ask me where to get them since they've seen pictures of mine. I'm half tempted to do product reviews for adult would be mers on youtube.

Hello everyone! I've been stalking this thread for aaaages as I waited for my Suntails mermaid tail. I got to hit the water with it several times and managed to grab some pictures!! I absolutely love it. I swam ridiculously better when I put the tail on versus with just the monofin which was a huge surprise for me. It was wonderful and I made it from one side of the lake to the other after a bit of practice! It was so much fun and I had quite a few people watching me! Two little girls got excited and wanted to pet my tail. I'm in love!
You can find the pictures on my Instagram here (https://www.instagram.com/mermaid_ligeia/)! They're too big to tag here. :(

Fun pictures from a cosplay photoshoot meetup at a creek a couple weekends ago! There are more in an album, if you wanna click on my profile, but these show off the fabric tail nicely :) It's a SunTail skin but I ripped off the fluke and attached a new one to fit my Hydra monofin, then added some extra fabric at the waist.

Maybe not around here but I'm sure there's a few on YouTube. Just general "how to sew in ____" ya know?
Use a zig zag stitch for sure though, and Velcro would be the easiest option.

I've been lurking the forums for a while and haven't seen this idea tossed around... I might have missed it, but here it goes, anyway:
I see a lot of people talking about wanting a more realistic look with fabric tails - scales, more specifically. Has anyone thought of trying fake flower petals? You can buy them in bulk, they're relatively cheap, they give you a lot of colour options, as well as different shapes, textures, and fabrics. Maybe they can even be waterproofed or ... something? I don't know. But they'd give the look of scales, and I think they'd help hide legs/knees/ankles/etc..

I'm all for sharing ideas. :) It isn't something I've been able to test out yet, but I can't imagine it not being worth a try. I'd imagine you'd get more movement with the petals, in comparison to silicone scales, too, and less weight. You could use them to hide seams, sew them on in patches (like those tights that have patches of silicone scales attached to sheer pantyhose,) mix up the colors, etc.. And because they're fabric, they're easier to reshape, modify, dye, and embellish. I think it'd be really fun to try out.

I am so happy I found this thread!!! I have just begun my mermaid journey and at first I was going to just buy a silicone tail right off the bat. But hearing that I should start on a fabric to get use to the swim style and build up the correct muscles before going into the heavier silicone tail, and now seeing how much people LOVE their fabric tails...I am so happy that I ordered my first fabric tail!
I do a lot of modeling, which is why I convinced myself that I needed the silicone, to look more real. But hearing how much you all love your fabric tails and all the pros that come with a fabric tail, I think if you get the right accessories, a fabric tail can be just as beautiful as a silicone one 💖
I am super excited for my tail to come in and I am so happy to find so many mers that prefer the fabric to silicone ❤

Is there any way to add on tail flair without taking apart the tail?
Or would it be easier to just make a tail from scratch at that point?

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160810/d129bdce75c6e821fd25036a5473adeb.jpg.
It is possible. I added some sequin mesh streamers to the end of my finfun and attempted to add heel fins. I'm not sure exactly how I would add side fins.
I think it would probably be easier to sew and add more fins to a new tail.
I got a waterway monofin, so, I plan to sew my next tail from scratch and follow Stella's tutorial. We will see if I change my mind about what's easier. Lol

When I add my fins I don't take apart any seams at all. I've added hip fins, two sets of ankle fins, a set of fins that goes around the sides of my fluke (I'm not quite sure how to describe those ones) and the only one I haven't sewn on yet is a dorsal, and that's only because of time restraints. You just have to be very careful where you sew them. I think if you made a tail from scratch, depending on the types of fins you'd want, it would actually be harder.

I want to share my fabric tail I had custom made from Mermaidreams. It's black and silver. The fabrics were on her list online but I chose which ones I wanted and how to use them as accents. I sent her my measurements and it fits perfect. I asked for a bit higher waist and added a silver waist band in front and a triangle in the back. There is an accent star fish on the hip and the fluke has silver vein accents and flowy silver and black sheer fabric draping on the bottom. The fluke was made to fit my Aquarius mono fin and has a zipper to take it in and out. The sewing is fantastic and I love it.

So the Aquarius monofin in my fabric tail finally gave up and broke completely. My other monofin is a Hydra, twice the size, so to mod my fabric tail to take it a completely new fluke was needed. A few square feet of neoprene and some paint later. . .

It's actually a super old basic under water digital camera. (I'll find it and let you know the brand later)
And all I did was have my BF film me haha.
I've had that camera for easily 6+ years now xD
Haha nice! I meant to reply to this in the YouTube thread, but try scaling your footage up to look wide screen next time, not 4:3 on YouTube

No, you can do that in an editing software, just make the video really big and it will fit into a 1080 frame.

So the Aquarius monofin in my fabric tail finally gave up and broke completely. My other monofin is a Hydra, twice the size, so to mod my fabric tail to take it a completely new fluke was needed. A few square feet of neoprene and some paint later. . .

New fluke! :D Got to debut it at the Wooden Boat Festival this weekend. (me hanging out at work at the festival on my ship)

It also swims like a dream (the Hydra is so much more powerful than the Aquarius) though no vid of that yet
Great job on the fluke fix! By the way I have always liked how you have such a striking dark tail.

It's an iridescent mermaid fabric I stumbled upon when I went to Joanns :) They hadn't even put it on the shelf yet, you have to find it in the carts of all the bagged up bolts of fabric.

It is delicate, won't take much scuffing, but I've been handling mine for a few days and it's not as bad as some mylar-printed fabrics...not coming off on my hands, but it will scrape off easily. I'm thinking of putting a silicone top coat on mine...when I get a moment to breathe!

That is legit one of the COOLEST things I have ever seen done with an Aquarius!

So many beautiful tails!! I just wanted to post a few more photos of my tail here, because, it is now four and a half years old! I can't believe how well it's held up in that time (although admittedly, I don't get to use it that often since my day job is exhausting and I moved to the desert 1 2/3 years ago). It's had a little stretching and some of the paint is just barely fading, but I think I'm the only one who can really tell haha. It hasn't stretched enough for me to take it in yet, but it's comforting knowing I can alter the size as needed whenever I need to!

I know a lot of people see fabric tails as just starting tails or a precursor to moving on to silicone, but I still really love mine :) It's very portable, light, and kids love it a lot and don't care that it's not as realistic as possible. Even though I'm thinking about adding a silicone tail to my life, I still love and want to keep making fabric ones for myself! They're a lot more forgiving, comfortable, and so much less expensive haha.

I only have the one fabric tail, and have always lusted after a partial or full silicone tail. But this thread made me appreciate my tail so much more.
It's got flaws, and certainly can do with a makeover/remake but it's mine. And I love it!
Please let's not let this thread die!
Mermaid Lazuli, have you taken the EcoTail out for a swim yet? I have often looked at the EcoTails too, it's just that shipping to Australia makes it almost double the cost :P

I have! It worked out pretty well for me and I'm quite happy with it (although I would suggest wearing socks with it.) The monofin inside has more propulsion than a FinFun tail, due to the the fact that it's stiffer. I also like the rather realistic scale pattern. The one thing to keep in mind with them apparently is that the tail has a seam where the body meets the monofin, so you're advised to try not to stand on the bottom in the tail as much as possible because it can stress the seam. I have not had a problem yet, though!
Also, Mertailor has sales every once in awhile that cut the cost of the EcoTails a good amount. If you wanted, you might be able to wait and that would bring the total cost down... You have my sympathy, I've heard shipping to Australia can be a pain.

TIA!I typically just ignored little rips. If they got too bad I remade the fin part of my tail. Mine had the body made of that sequin mermaid fabric though and that part held up well so I always just replaced the spandex covering the monofin. The latest rendition, I coated the spandex in silicone.
