Open question: how do mers typically travel with large tails (i.e. competitor monofin size that cannot fit in a suitcase) when travelling by air? My competitor monofin can't fit in my suitcase and I'm unsure if it will be allowed as carry-on. If I absolutely have to check it, what is the best way to do so to prevent it from getting damaged?
I can't bear to leave it home when I'm going to Jamaica! Please let me know what you all do <3

From what I've heard, your best shot is to call the airline ahead of time

I just put my mono fin in its bag in the over head on top of my carry on.

UPDATE: I was able to get the tail through security and customs and took it on board as a carry on! On the way to Jamaica the flight attendant placed the tail behind the seats in first class, however on the way back the attendant said it wasn't allowed. I was able to fit it in the overhead, though!
Conclusion: a tail with a competitor monofin can get through security, customs, and be taken on board a flight with Caribbean Airlines!
P.S. - I carried it in a large easel bag! Worked like a charm ;)
