Hello everyone! So yes, i have decided to make a new mermaid tail. I am very excited, ive been wanting to make a tail for so long now, and i finally have the money to do so.
So the tail that i am making is a painted fabric hybrid tail. The leg portion will be made out of fabric, and the fluke will be painted fabric. Ive always wanted to paint, so im happy that i finally get to. Ive watched courtney mermaid's video tutorials but i will be doing tons more research on painting fabric.
This is the fabric i will be using for the leg portion https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170611/112134189b1ea6b165f5776147a0b914.jpg
And the fluke will probably be an iridescent green fabric. And i am planning on using Lumiere paints in pearl purple and pearl blue. Ive never used these paints, so any advice will greatly be appreciated.
This is the design my friend made for me :) https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170611/c70f187d15ff3782f95a9c14b1ea0d15.jpg
I will be posting many updates of my journey :) Now, the first step was to get my main fabric, which i did, from joanns. Next step is to get the fluke fabric and paints. My sewing machine is broke though, so tonight my dad is going to help me fix it. Anyways, thats all i can think of to say at the moment soooo yeah!

I love your fluke design! The pattern on it feels really organic.
Is that the cosplay by Yaya Han fabric?
If so, I feel inclined to warn you about previous cases of cosplayers who bought the fabric that got either severe skin irritation or even downright chemical burns after it got wet from sweat, rain, or spills. I haven't heard good reviews from my friends about the fabric since the line was launched. If they updated the quality and eliminated whatever they coated the fabric with to increase the life of the fabric then that's great. But please try to test the fabric beforehand just in case on a small portion of your skin! It's safer to test before you jump in the pool with it. D:

I would second this, not only for the issues with Yaya Han's particular fabric, but washing you fabric before using is so important.
Especially for a fabric you will swim in. Not only will it help to remove any yucky chemicals used to keep the fabric from smelling funky, but also to give you an idea of how it fares in water. For example, I had NO idea my first fabric tail would spore thousands of tiny gliiter flakes every time I swam. If I had washed it before hand, it would have eliminated this problem.
And using Lumiere paints, do you have a fabric medium? Or just using the paint itself. I would suggest doing a few light layers of the paint, instead of one thick one. And I found sponges my best friend when painting my fluke (which was fabric covered). :)

I am just using the lumiere paints. And yup! I already have sponges on my materials list hehe
This concerns me as I just got a tail finished using that exact fabric that will be sent to me at the end of the week.

Update: Just got the fluke fabric! We couldn't find a perfect match, but the green with the purple and blue paint will look very pretty. Here are the two compared in different lights https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170613/2a0b98a0714878b561a7f7d4c07bb8dd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170613/948065008bcd83f235b927ead8f1e865.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170613/87f116ca042d1015a3411369298a1cbf.jpg

Hi, I got the same fabric from Joanne fabrics also and I love it. I made the pattern from a fin fun tail and this was my fourth one. I used the selvage to make a matching top and also to hot glue fabric over an old bra. I do expect the fabric to fade over time. but I'm having a lot of fun and your design idea great and your finished tale is going to be fabulous.

I'm so excited to see what it'll look like when it's all done! Those colours look so beautiful together, and they'll look gorgeous with those painted embellishments on the fluke. :)

Just got my paints! They are beautiful. The purple doesnt take to the fabric as well as the blue, so that means ill probably have to add a few more layers to it. No big deal :) i wasnt expecting them to work so wellhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170620/d55ef8f0e46046baa01a2ef6c1d28152.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170620/b944626107905ca8d2d5f5258d9b2f8f.jpg

This is my tail. I did test out the fabric with sweat and water etc. I poured some ocean water on it and it was perfectly fine and I also used regular pipe water..i haven't had the chance to swim in it yet though.

Your tail turned out amazing congratulations [emoji324][emoji322][emoji898][emoji323]. But i thought that the term "hybrid tail" was meant for tails usually made with silicone caulk with a neoprene or fabric backing? Like the tail Keiris made or Tiggs Tails, i may be wrong though
