View Full Version : What's your mer name, and why?
Mermaid Peridot
06-16-2017, 11:15 AM
I've had my tail for almost a year, but I'm only now just getting around to creating a mersona for myself. I want to take things to a little higher level, get into mermaiding a bit more seriously, and I've noticed that a lot of mers have a sort of stage name they go by when in character. I figure that's a good place to start - kind of embrace and recognize my merself!
So what's your mer name? How did you pick it and why - does it have any special meaning?
So far I'm leaning toward Peridot... My b-day's in Aug and my fave color is green, to the point where I dye my hair green, and my tail's main color is green too :)
Siren Veritas

I chose the name Veritas. My account name is Siren Veritas (ironic, right?) but I go by Mermaid Veritas, like "mermaid of truth," I think it sounds magical and mythical, which is why I like it.

My mername has gone through some stages of evolution through the years around 2012 i gave myself my first mer name based on my birth goddess Yemaya back then the community was big on titles like Kings and Prince, so i decided to call my self Yemaya the Mer Prince i went with it for a few years untill i found the name "Marinus" wich means "Of the sea" i immediately identified with this name and decided to camm myself Merman Marinus, until recently i found the name "Mortimer" which translated means "Of Still Waters" i loved it and decided to use it as a last name now my name is "Marinus Mortimer" which to me translates to "From the sea of still waters" which reflects the form of my inner world.

i am getting my tail as soon as a lose the weight. i am trying to figure out where to start with my mersona lol i really want an awesome mer name !
I've always been called Slim so it just made sense to be called that as a merman. It's really the main thing people notice when people see me.

Ah, that's a really good one - a lot of meaning. When I had more time I was in the SCA and my name was Celeste Marinier, for the heaven and sea. I was tempted to keep that, but I'm not sure I like how Celeste sounds anymore.

Once upon a time I was swimming by myself in an empty pool and decided to wear my glasses and be like Traci Hines. So I took some photos attempting to look like a hipster mermaid. My inner self-critic was like "who am I kidding, I'm not a hipster mermaid... I'm a nerdmaid."
I liked that name actually a lot better and thus is my branding.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170616/ff9c26a1509001869cae3441ccbdca29.jpg

Neerai
06-16-2017, 02:58 PM
I'm Neerai. This name has more than 15 years, and the first character I designed with it was a ocean elve. But eventually became my nickname for a lot of years. It's a name derived from "nereid", a sea nymph.
But my mersona is not a nymph. It's a pirate mermaid! She goes with the crew searching for gold and jewels!! :D Arrrrrrrrr...matey!

You know, I've drawn mersonas of myself but never came up with a mername. Perhaps I should. Arcinus sounds nice, it's like Orcinus. Orcas are my favorite animal.

As much art as I do (and I do) I've never actually drawn my mersona... no idea why. I like Arcinus, but honestly, Orcinas is nice too! Especially if your tail is Orca themed! That would be cute! Okay... maybe not "cute," orcas are serious predators. Just watched a nature showwhere they drowned a humpback calf... scary.

I like that name, even if your not a nymph exactly. It's close enough to nereid that you can get the root easliy, but different enough it's not the only thing you think of.
Heh - I haven't really thought of any sort of backstory for my mersona. I have other mer characters that do, but couldn't really make them my mersona, so I gotta start over!
Aurelian

My name is Aurora Celestia, which refers to both the auroras, aka the Norther Lights, and the celestial sky, aka space. So, basically my name means "lights in the sky". Also, Aurora is translated as "sun" or "dawn", which makes sense as well.
Syreni

Princess Aegean
06-17-2017, 12:37 AM
Mine is weird. I chose princess, not to be like a fantasy princess but like to be someone that others can count on to do right by them and depend upon, and that will defend their friends. So a strong, warrior princess instead of like Disney. I actually didn't choose Aegean myself. I was with my friends, trying to come up with a name to describe myself, and since I obviously love the sea, one said "Aegean, because it's deep and sometimes mysterious but really pretty all around. And you never quite know if a shark is gonna come bite you in the ass." I dunno about that last part, but I liked the rest so I went with it!

I am also an August baby!! Lucky number 7 for me :-) I have debated myself if I should have a mermaid name or not. I am brand new to mermaiding, though I have always loved mermaids and are my favorite mythical creature, and I have also wanted a tail for years and only this month was finally able to get one! I remember growing up, pretending to be a mermaid while swimming with my cousin in Georgia. I still have some debating to do. I think Peridot is cute. Which pronunciation do you prefer? Peri-doh or peri-dot? Enjoy embracing your merself :-)

Mermaid Tula
06-18-2017, 02:43 AM
One of my favorite shows growing up was Pirates of Dark Water. A very nautical, magical show. One of the characters is Tula, a ecomancer. (an elemental magic user) as well as a warrior chick! http://piratesofdarkwater.net/characters/tula.html I fell in absolute love with the character. I took a lot of inspiration from her growing up. It's still one of my absolute favorite shows and it breaks my heart that it wasn't finished.
Mermaid Summerlilly
06-18-2017, 03:08 AM
I originally wanted something cute and cool, so I started with "Summer". Then I saw everyone's names on the forum and thought "Nah, it's too simple." and switched it. I'm now Summerlilly, but only on this forum. I've since outgrown the name... I've changed quite a bit this year, so now I go by just "Lilly". My name's already nice enough and it's simple, so I go by it. I can't change it on the forum yet, however, since I switched from Summer to Summerlilly last year... ouf. Oh well. XD
ReyaBlue
06-18-2017, 06:11 AM
I go by Reya Blue. Reya because it's basically my name in another language (Russian, I've always found the language fascinating) and sounds all mystically like. And Blue because it's one of my favourite colours. My favourite shades of blue are ice, navy, sky and ocean.
Mermaid Lilija
06-18-2017, 09:28 AM
I originally wanted something cute so I named myself "Mermaid Kiko". It has no meaning it was just a cute nickname friends gave me when I was little.
Then I thought about my mersona being a spirit that is from the arctic fresh waters. I searched for names and finally came upon a name I loved.
Lilija was the name & it means "Snow" wich suits really well ^^.

My name Clara, was given to me in high school Spanish class and I've totally respond to that name more than my real name Kelly. My full mermaid name is Clara Seastar, I also use Seastar as a term of endearment toward my Sunday school kids, i.e. "That's great, Seastar!"

Nice! I like the idea of tying in the heavens since the moon controls the tide, and that's such a big part of ocean life, and of course cause sailors used the stars for navigation.
I used the name Celeste before with another group, but I'm just not sure I'm in love with it now and think I might be better with a fresh start.

My name is Kae because I feel that it's more gender neutral. I plan on going professional and it makes things easier for me since I will be transitioning from female to male at some point. People wouldn't have to really search to find me again if they had to and I can be more comfortable because the name doesn't have a definite gender,

Hey my birthday is August too! haha. Right now my mermaid name is just Isabella. Its my middle name and i thought would be cool if she was a mermaid during 1720. About the time that the Pirates of the Caribbean movies take place. She wears an old corset she found floating in the water. I will probably change my name but for now Isabella was easiest to come up with haha

Triton-Mahtlinnie
06-21-2017, 12:57 AM
My mer name is Mahtlinnie. (pronounced Matl- innie) It's Chinook Wawa (a local native trade language) for "Towards the sea". I wanted something nautical, but also tied to my love for my native Pacific Northwest. Chinook Wawa has always been one of my little passions.
I also use the prefix "Triton" (as opposed to Mermaid or Merman) because it's more gender neutral, and I'm a non-binary person.

Love this thread, I love people's stories and it is amazing hearing how you all chose your names! I'm Mermaid Kerenza Sapphire - Kerenza is an old Cornish word for 'love', and my Dad who passed away in March was Cornish, though I chose the name long before he died. Sapphire is blue and one of my favourite precious stones :) There's more about my mermaid self here: http://unfurlingyourwings.com/project/mermaid-kerenza-sapphire/
I actually have six other alter egos besides my mersona, in various stages of development, and am in the process of converting a course I used to run on developing an alter ego into a series of books including one based around mermaids and mersonas!

Rebela Hunter
06-22-2017, 12:25 AM
Lots of cool name stories! :D
Mine is Lady Rebela. Or mermaid Rebela, but I hate adding "mermaid" on my name, or capitalizing the M, because it sounds like you're saying "Human Bob", y'know? Or "Dog Fido". Makes no sense! It's not really a legit "title", like King, Queen, etc.
I like Rebela because I named my first fursona / character Rebel, as I have always been a challenger of society and it's ridiculous insanity. It became Rebela when someone told me Rebel didn't sound very feminine, and it kind of stuck! < 3
I like my name in it's entirety because it sounds lady-like, elegant, and regal. Sorta stereotypical mermaid name, but my tail sure isn't stereotypical like my name ! I'm more of a social-outcast lone-wolf mermaid ;)
Keep the stories coming! It's a great read <3

Mermaid Curls
06-28-2017, 01:46 PM
I chose Merrow Moana. Merrow is Irish for mermaid, and well, I am of Irish descent. My first mer-event was at Dragon Con in 2014, where I was inducted into the Dragon Con Pod. We were "decoration" at the Pin-ups by the Pool" party, and we were in different sections. They were designated by different words for mermaid, and mine was Merrow, so it stuck. Moana is Hawaiian for sea. I lived in Hawaii for three years as a child. It's where I learned to snorkel and develop my love of the ocean.
Mermaid_Namaka
06-28-2017, 05:01 PM
My love of the sea actually first began when I watched Lilo and Stitch when I was little. I also loved dance, and fell in love with the Hawaiian culture, and even started learning Hawaiian. I chose the name Namaka when I first developed an interest in mermaiding, back in the fifth grade. Partially because of it's Hawaiian roots, and also because of its connection to lunar things (its the name of a dwarf planet's moon). I have really strong connections to the moon, and always feel the best during full moons. H2O and Mako Mermaids sorta further ingrained the connection between the moon and mermaids to me too. So Namaka after the sea and the moon. My mersona's middle name is Niš, which means new moon in Old Norse. I'm part Norwegian, and it's the only part of my heritage I remember ever specifically celebrating. My mersona's father, a merman, is from Norway :) Then my last name is Luna, after both the moon and from one of my favorite Harry Potter characters. I love her uniqueness and I don't know why she wasn't a Hufflepuff tbh. It took me like two months to realise that I named myself "Moon Moon". It fits though, I'm a mermaid who can't really swim XD

I know... there's some really good ones out there. I want something a little more than just tacking on "mermaid" to the beginning of my name!
I know right! That's what I first thought when I was trying to come up with mine, but that was also around the time I was making an account here so if I had waited it would've taken me 5 months to join! The solution I came up with was to just place mermaid before my name until I could think of something better (I had one idea bouncing around in my head but I was trying to avoid using it) I actually had merwandering pm me because she thought I was her daughter! No kidding, we live in the same place and had the same name. Lol! I wanted something original that not everyone else has and that could more fully express who I am, no offense to all the mermaid _________s out there, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I eventually realized that first "real" idea I had was the only one that worked (backstory, flavor reasoning, etc.) so I became Sea Phoenix Savannah and that idea I was avoiding I now love!

Sea Phoenix Savannah. It was the best name I could come up with and it fit me so well; also, uniqueness factor: I've only seen 1 other mer with a similar name, no one has the same name as me!
It does have special meaning in that it fits me and who I am very well, but also the backstory is quite fun. It took some hard thinking but it means even more to me because of that.
Congrats on the name change Mermaid Peridot! How are you liking it so far?
Once upon a time I was swimming by myself in an empty pool and decided to wear my glasses and be like Traci Hines. So I took some photos attempting to look like a hipster mermaid. My inner self-critic was like "who am I kidding, I'm not a hipster mermaid... I'm a nerdmaid."
I liked that name actually a lot better and thus is my branding.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170616/ff9c26a1509001869cae3441ccbdca29.jpg

faithonthebass that's an awesome origin story! I always love your posts. I think your nerd mermaid thing is way cool! I love how hardcore you are and the image you project is awesome, it's so creative! The inner critic can be rather daunting, but sometimes just needs to take a lesson in "shut up". You've been an inspiration to me (and many more I'm sure), keep rocking!

My name is Kae because I feel that it's more gender neutral. I plan on going professional and it makes things easier for me since I will be transitioning from female to male at some point. People wouldn't have to really search to find me again if they had to and I can be more comfortable because the name doesn't have a definite gender,
That's a good idea, Kae works really well for either gender and it's easy to remember. I like how you chose to spell it too!

Isabella is nice, and it sounds very period. LOL, I haven't put much thought into my mersona's history, so that's really awesome you have!

That's really unique, and has a great history to it. I've never really put too much thought into the difference between Triton and merman honestly, though I know some girls use Siren instead of mermaid which is nice too. I would be tempted to do similar except I think in mythology Sirens were actually bird people. I wonder where Triton originated?

A nice name with a nice backstory to it! I really need to try to develop the story to my mersona more... I have like nothing, lol.

I picked Wisty because it sounds cool. And because it's close enough to my real name that I will respond to it.

My mer-name is Glinda Rose, which is a combination of the names of two characters from Wicked the musical, Glinda and Nessarose. I don't use 'Mermaid' as a prefix; for some reason it just doesn't gel with me, so I prefer Glinda Rose by itself, or else you can call me Your Bubbliness. :D
LOL - I love "Your Bubbliness," very regal :D

My Mer-name is Melodica. It's a combination of my Japanese name Marika and the name my mom wanted to give me before I was born which was Melody. I was just going to use Melody, but since Ariel and Eric's daughter's name is Melody I didn't want to seem like I was copying. Plus I feel like Melodica seems more unique and elegant, idk XP

It's nice that you have a personal history to your name. Yeah I sort of feel you on the "mermaid" thing, but I chose to go with it so if I try to do things outside the mer community it's obvious what my character is.

I don't really have a specific mersona. I do so many things, I just have Lotus. Auriel is my birth name, with the L on the back. I don't put a lot of stock in names, though. Energy is much more important.

I figured I'd just use my last name from my mothers side of the family. It just seems like a decent name to use, Arking, and I already use it for a pseudonym when drawing. Maybe if I got in the water more and practiced I'd find something more suitable.
I like it - it has a sense of strength about it!

I it would be so nice to live by the ocean! I'm totally landlocked, boo. I really like Merrow, sounds very fae to me!

I didn't mean to downplay anyone else's choices. I have actually gone through many names, over the years, but I am many things, and I chose something that fits everything. I honestly didn't think about Auriel being so close to Ariel. My given name is Laurie. LOL. There is a whole lot of witchy goddess energy mumbo jumbo tied up in it. I have always been fascinated by mermaid lore. But yes, it has only been in the last couple years that I have come back to it, and decided to incorporate everything else into that specifically. I am finding that everything I do can be relative to mermaiding. It's what I am. [emoji175]

Waves of Ash
07-01-2017, 04:02 AM
My name went through a few stages before settling with one. I started with naturegirl1224 (YouTube username), went to Waves of Ash, then to Dapperus (Steam), and back to Waves of Ash (pretty much every social media platform). I actually made up my current name a long time ago as a username for Quizilla when I accidentally inverted a picture of dolphins jumping out of a wave and the waves looked like ash! I thought that it was clever since my name is Ashley. It sounds a little emo but I like to show just how wrong that assumption is about the name.
I know that it isn't the typical "mermaid" name but I think it suits me well! People just call me Ash for short but the full name "Waves of Ash" alludes to the waves of laughter that typically comes from being around me and just being myself!

I'm a writer so I originally used the name Alvara for one of my characters. It took a long time to find because nothing seemed to fit her quiet right. But when I finally found it I kept saying it over and over I just loved how it sounded. It was one of those few moment s as a writer that I mentally patted myself on the back because I was like "yeah I found a cool thing this is great."
So when I found out that mermaids chose special mermaid names I really wanted one and I thought over the names I'd used for characters and remembered Alvara. But I didn't know what it meant and when I looked it up I laughed so hard. It said that it's German and means army of elves. And I was just like yup this is me I'm made up of an army of elves. Not really but it really works for some reason. And my mermaidself tends to be more mischievous so it just fits. Just Alvara no mermaid before it or other titles but if I had to give it one the name would be Alvara the Trickster. But probably not Alvara stands fine on it's own.

Wow such great stories. I personally am still deciding on my mer name; however, I might use my actual name, Marina. I was named after a female heroine from, Paris(The play). And since I spend the rest of my free time with Amtgard (larp) as a fierce combatant. I feel Marina just fits really well.

My mermaid name is Mermaid amelia, the reason I chose 'Amelia' is for a few reasons
My middle name is amelia, and my parents named me off of amelia island (A beautiful place about an hour from me in florida)
I didn't think my real name would be a good one for a screen name, mainly because 'Mermaid cassiopeia' is a bit long and as others might like it, it doesnt have too much of a ring to my ears as 'Mermaid amelia' does xD
My parents named me off of things, cassiopeia being the constellation, and Amelia being for the island and amelia earhart. I wanted my name to be original.. something that wasn't named after somewhere or someone. I had tons of ideas for names like
Mermaid consta
Mermaid angelina
Mermaid gracia
But these names didn't seem to be.. 'me' so I just decided I would stick with mermaid amelia. ^~^ and I still love it

After making a long list of potential names, I decided on Nyx. I wanted something unique that fits my personality. My real name is far too popular and it doesn't fit me at all. Nyx is the Greek goddess of the night. I'm a night owl who loves wearing black. I feel like it just fits my personality and it just feels right.

My mer name is Mikayla Saltheir, I've always liked this name and it works well with my mersona.

Rekin Delja. Rekin is Polish for Shark, and Delja is Polish for 'Daughter of the Sea'.I'm Polish as well, so that helps! For short, I go by Rekin. The shark has always been my totem and guide within life, so it was only fitting that my 'mersona' name reflects the respect and love I have for them. The tail that I will be ordering is going to also reflect my love for the Apex of the ocean <3

I went with Luna Belle for a couple reasons. I have such adoration of the moon and the light she gives off! However, when I was in Canada I witnessed the northern lights! I loved the way all the colors danced with each other.. I couldn't decide! I stuck with Luna Belle, and let my tails play the part of the ever-changing northern lights (I've a blue and purple tail for when it's just the moon and the purple lights. A green and purple tail for when it's just those colors dancing together. And a blue green tail for when it's just the moon and the green lights)♡♡♡ my mersona goes that some mermaids adapt their tails to their surroundings, and being a mermaid originating from the boundary waters area in Minnesota, the northern lights and the moon bouncing off the lakes at night decide which colors will be present in my tail. It's also how I get around explaining why I'm never in the same tail as before :3
