So... Hi... Welcome to my thread. I just got interested in mermaiding and I'm working on ordering a tail soon, although I'm worried that there's no one in my area for me to mermaid with. I'm super introverted and it'll be hard enough to go out in a tail and not be thinking about people thinking I'm weird. I've always been into cosplaying and LARPing but at comicon everyone is dressed up so it's not weird... Any advice for a lonely mermaid like me?

Hi there! As a fellow introvert and general social flop, I at first fretted about publicly mermaiding. But I found my first swim to go quite well as I was with my family who were more that happy to answer the public's questions and help me out. In the few months following, I would take my sister to my local pool (where I now work as a lifeguard) with me to take photos. We often swam during very slow times where there was less public scrutiny. I have found that the joy of mermaiding outweighed the fear of people's reactions. In fact, all of my early experiences were positive as it was not a thing where I lived at all. People like my lifeguard instructor (and eventually boss) said "hey that looks fun!", children of all ages looked on in awe and old ladies part of the aquasize classes were curious and delighted! After about a year of mermaiding from time to time by myself or with my sister, I met up with a girl much younger but we still had fun together! Later on, I discovered that there were people closer to my age that I now meet up and swim with and have a wonderful time! I'm always nervous before swimming with someone new, but it always is wonderful! Even if it is one or two other mermaids, it's great to be weird together! Now of course I am known as the "lifeguard mermaid" and am a pretty common sight at the pool and thus I don't fear judgement anymore. Plus I've stopped giving a ship.

Welcome. Be sure to introduce yourself in the introductions thread, and sign up for the pod in your area. That's the best way to meet others who live nearby, and often times meetups are set up through the pods. :)
