View Full Version : How to Extend a Monofin? [Leaderfins Finswimmer]

Hello! I really need some help / advice!

I'm making a tail that requires a bigger shape than THIS (https://www.freedivershop.com/leaderfins-finswimmer-monofin?___store=us&gclid=Cj0KEQjwyN7JBRCZn7LKgb3ki8kBEiQAaLEsqj62XfOX Y_Z0EHpUZh-ozK9SPK7OjJnsI6CNiwl_4G4aAlNQ8P8HAQ) monofin, so how do I go about extending it?

It reads, in the description:
"Equipped with angular footpockets (~10 degrees), which act as a natural extension of your feet and makes for a more powerful stroke.

The monofin blade is made of high quality multi-layered fiberglass. Equipped with comfortable soft rubber footpockets."

I am basing my tail on an orca, and it will have large pectorals and a dorsal [very floppy pecs, not so floppy dorsal]. The fluke needs to be stiff enough to keep me moving forward.
This tail will not be made of silicone OR neoprene, or any fabric for that matter! I'm using liquid rubber.
No I am not looking for criticism on the materials I'm using to make this tail, I just want to know how to get this monofin extended!

Am I able to glue pieces of the same plastic to it? Will it hold? Do I just extend the design?

Thank you in advance! < 3

You may be able to do the duct tape/zip tie method. I used gorilla tape and thick zip ties (1/2 inch wide). You might be able to make a frame with the zip ties and then add in more plastic in between the ties and tape over to make a thicker, more stable fin.

Hi!
I have heard of people using Lexan which is sort of like a flexible glass to make and extend a monofin. I don't know what the means they have to attach it but I would assume gorilla glue or silicone or something along those lines. Hope that helps and I hope to see the finished project! Good luck!

Fin Fun uses Lexan. It's a polycarbonate type of Plexiglas. Tougher, but it can still SNAP. And it doesn't snap nicely...

Even bigger? The Leaderfins is almost the same size as my Competitor.

Terrifying.

A few people have used duct tape in the past for mods, though I assume it has to be replaced every now and again.

Gorilla makes a clear ("crystal clear"), weatherproof, heavy-duty tape that might be worth a shot. $6 for the whole 9 yards (necessary) on Amazon.

Thank you all for answering!

I was reccommended to just make my own shape out of Lexan using a method of custom monofin making listed in the threads, so I think I'll try that before experimenting on an expensive and not correctly shaped/sized monofin!

Thank you for the video, Faith!
Sadly, I need something stiffer than her method of extension. :(

Since I'll be making a very realistic orca tail, I want the fluke to be wide and stiff, with minimal floppyness.
Hers would be good for my next tail project, though !!!

Thank you very much!
