Does anyone have any problems with earplugs falling oht while swimming? I just bought some in Wal-Mart for when i go mermaiding in Jamaica. Is this a prevalent problem?

No. It irritates my ears a tiny bit, but it's not safe to use ear plugs beyond casual swimming. The cutoff point for wearing them is around 6 feet down, and below. I imagine if you go deep enough, they might get stuck in your ears, and damage your ear drums. There's lots of stuff we can pick up from SCUBA and freediving communities regarding safety and techniques. Some people here (admittedly, including myself) don't have a background in either activity, and don't always think to search there for information. The best bet is to practice and learn how to equalize your ears properly. This is a pretty decent article on how to do it, and how to do it safely. Thank you! I do know how to equalise my ears and I'm not planning to go that deep in the pool, thank you for replying.❤

You're welcome. I'm sorry, but I seem to have miscommunicated a bit. I don't wear ear plugs because of those problems with swimming in them. Make sure that you find a pair specifically for swimming, and not for blocking sound. Those weird gummy ones made of silicone are the worst. They should hold in as long as you put them in good enough. The water pressure will help hold them in.

the #1 issue recorded in the first health study on mermaids was chronic ear problems.
I have used ear plugs my entire mermaid career for 9 years with no issue at all :) I use a silicone type made for swimming, that are like puddy and mold to your ear. they are clear.
There ARE a type of ventilated ear plug cleared by the FDA for deep swimming and diving. they're called "doc pro plugs" but they need to be fit by a specialist.

Oh, that's interesting. So it's probably not smart to swim extensively without ear plugs? That might depend on your ear health in general. If you have tubes in your ears, used to have lots of ear infections, or don't dry off properly, or swim in bad water, that might be what causes or exasperates chronic ear problems. I just hate swimming with anything in or on my face in general. My one exception to that is wearing swim goggles, it just feels better to swim without them.

No the ear problems were a result of NOT using ear plugs. nearly every mermaid in the study from all over the world had bad ear experiences, and I was the only one using plugs. I've used plugs my whole life and have no issues. I perform in aquariums, swim in oceans, lakes, and pools, and work full time as a mermaid. 9 years no problems
