View Full Version : The Fish Identification Thread

Hey, all. I thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread where people can ask about fish they've seen on their swimming excursions that they can't identify.

I've got one that's eluding me. I live in South Florida and I've searched many websites for lists of native and non-native/invasive fish species but I haven't found the one I met today. It was small, yellow, and eye-shaped, with pale yellow/off-white spots, bright yellow fins, and a white horizontal stripe between its eyes. This fish caught my attention because it seemed to get really attached to me; it kept swimming around my chest and face and it followed me wherever I went until I swam back to shore. I don't know if it was attracted to my bright-colored hair or what, but it was carrying on like it was my little animal sidekick in a Disney movie. I was expecting it to start singing at any moment.

If anyone has any idea what kind of fish this might have been (or why it was stalking me) that'd be super helpful.

lol. your gonna have to be a bit more specific. are they ocelli spots?how many fins?is it a dorsal fin with two parts or is it spikey?i found some yellow fish with an adipose fin,but he is not found in that sea. is the head terminal, superior, or inferior? im thinking tang. draw it if you can. i really want to know who this fish is now.
also check a fish field guide. you can search all the fish of north america that way.

My guess would be a butterfly of some kind, but to ID a fish you need the body meridians, not just shape and color.

The only thing that I can think of that loosely resembles your description is the French Grunt
but I doubt that's what you're talking about XD

Yeah, that's why I thought of it
I also saw a picture of a Dog Snapper that really fit the description, but it seems to be more of individual coloring than the normal color of the species ....
if that makes any sense ..

I checked both suggestions in Google Image Search and this was definitely a French Grunt! This is very pleasing to me because it's good to know what this thing was, and I like that its' name is slightly naughty-sounding. Thanks!

Put French in front of anything and it sounds naughty. I was researching First World War artillery, looked up 'French 75' and got porn.

While irrelevant, my mom has a tee shirt from the town of French Lick, Indiana. Just thought I'd mention. x)

Well, not only has it been 21 years since I went scuba diving in the Bahamas, but I did not have a camera with me when I was there. I thin it would be nice to identify the really nice fish that were around me when I was diving. I know they were very hard to touch. I had to be extremely quick about it. I has just been way too long for me to remember what colors they were. Unless someone here knows what species of fish are around the coastal area of New Providence Island.

Hi ScheherazOdd, it seems to me that you almost always see French Grunts in schools, sometimes large ones. Maybe it's a very social fish and since it was isolated from any companions, it took up with you, hoping to school? I've seen videos where researchers have gotten schooling species of fish to even follow an artificial fish in the water. Did you have any yellow on, or black stripes?
