View Full Version : Making fabric tail more realistic?

A few months ago, I got my second mermaid skin, and gave my other to my friend, mainly because it was all torn up at the bottom.

The look of fabric tails and sillicone tails is extreme, so anyone have idea's on how to make a fabric tail look nicer and more realistic? My only idea is to take some tulle fabric (sorta like lace, google it)

I've heard people that cover their tails with small nets and spray either a lighter or darker color over it, to create a scale effect. Maybe that could work for you?

And some side fins could also help.

You could always try making facric scales from a thicker material and sewing them on.

True, my only problem with that is that I'd have to find a waterproof fabric with the fade design my tail has, lemme send a pic

Hmmm. Yeah, that would basically require a whole sheet of new material if you want to match your tail design.

I have an idea, I'm planning on making a rubber or latex sorta tail soon, nothing crazy, just the rubber I feel would be really sturdy and atleast make it look a bit less.. clothy? Fabricy? Idk if theres a word for it

Its not gonna be a sillicone tail, but I have to do tons of research, I might actually just coat my current tail in a latex glue to make it look better

My only recommendation is to make sure that the rubber is neutrally buoyant in the water. If its floaty, or too heavy it will be super dangerous to swim in.

There are webshops for fantasy/LARP/meyieval accessories where you can buy scales to make scale-armour. You could sow those on. Would be all silver than, though.

Then it wouldn't be swimmable anymore

Actually, the anodized aluminum scales are lighter than plastic and non corrosive. And they come in pretty metallic colors. There are also plastic and glow in the dark scales. Look up The Ring Lord, and then look at the scale maille stuff. Seriously. The only reason not to use this stuff is cost.
