So I'm currently working on a silicone caulking tail with neoprene backing. Can anyone however explain to me why spandex would not work as a base for the tail? I've seen nobody use it and I'm wondering why. Any ideas?

I used spandex for the backing of my dragonskin tail, it works like a charm. But I wouldn't recommend caulking with any fabric, but if you really want to use it neoprene would prevent the caulking from touching your skin. And with spandex it would bleed though the fabric and it will be directly in touch with your skin

How about lining it with another layer of spandex then? Or would that create a lot of drag?

Mermaid Robynn,
I think it would create lots of drag, and adding a second layer won't really do much. Spandex is a very breathable fabric, so it could still come into contact with your skin, even through 3 layers!
Thicker fabrics are definitely the best option, as to avoid harming yourself

Gonna have to break the bank for the neoprene then haha, thanks!
