I love a good shell top, but I'm also currently going for a very natural/"realistic" look for my mermaid persona at the moment. Considering my stomping (swimming?) grounds are the Great Lakes, which generally lack large clam shells, I've been considering a sort of fabric wrap top? Like the kind of fabric merfolk might salvage from a shipwreck or be left behind by/stolen from humans. My inspirations are Rey's top from Star Wars or Furiosa's from Fury Road, but cutting off like a crop top. With perhaps some sea weed and small shells added for adornment and a bra/bikini top hidden underneath to support the girls. What do you think? And how would it hold up in water?

Sounds great idea! From what I've read of swimwear and the making processes, spandex dance wear and ice skating dresses are made from the same material as swimwear.

Hmm, I would think something that looks like sail canvas tied with nautical rigging rope? Basically the halter top version of Ariel's sail wreckage dress?

I would use canvas drop cloth to mimic ship's sail

Canvas cloth is too heavy for swimming.

Use calico instead of actual canvas. Same look but a much lighter material

My sister had plans for a pirate flag top with the hidden bra and rope similar to the sail ideas.
