View Full Version : Is MerMania worth going to?

I'm pretty sure now that I'll finally have a sea-worthy tail [not literally - I just mean a working tail].
I want to try and branch out and meet more mers! Not just online, but in person. I'm better at making friends face to face where I can actually get to know people more and connect on a different level that you just can't get on the internet!
I was thinking about going to MerMania... but some things are stopping me.
I'm not sure if I'll end up making friends. A lot of people don't seem to like how bold and sarcastic I can be, once I get over the shy stage. [Online, I usually don't have a shy stage].
I might be a wallflower, as I can be shy before someone speaks to me or I build up the courage to speak to them. Large crowds really intimidate me, too. So many people moving around, doing their own thing - it's like an ant pile!
I'm not totally sure if I want to participate in some things like the dance thingy [prom?] or things like it.
I'm not a fan of pointless drama. Every mer has an enemy, but I don't want to witness any fights or find someone who decided to be my enemy and try to make it into a big deal to show off for their friends! I've heard of some heavy drama from last year's event... what happens if I run into someone there that hates me on MerNetwork or Facebook and they start some stupid drama over it?
Can I learn anything while attending MerMania? What benefits me at such a large event? I usually don't travel unless it's something that benefits me, even if it's just the chance to do something different!
When swimming in that huuuuuge pool with other mers, is it difficult to move around? I'm a surface-dweller most of the time, and my tail will be wide, so I don't want to hurt anybody by accident!
Thank you, everyone, in advance for your answers! <3
I appreciate every mer!

I'm going because I want to check out the panels about underwater modeling and stuff.
I also want pictures in the pool.
And totally want to meet some of the people I've met online (Pearlie!!).
So to me? Totally worth it. :)
(Also I'm hella blunt and sarcastic so you can chill with me lol)

I went to MerMania last year and I barely knew who anyone was, I just recognized their tails. I made one friend, but I was being shy and I didn't go to the ball either.
At times it can be difficult to get seat in the pool when you get tired and you might accidentally get touched (or slightly smacked) by a big silicone fluke, but for the most it isn't so bad.
There were booths at the pool last year that were really fun to look at like the Finis, FinFolk, Mertailor, MagicTail, and Rescue Sirens booths (and I few others I don't remember the name to.) And the Animator of The Little Mermaid, Philo, was there. It was really cool meeting him and his friend.
I am really looking forward to MerMainia 2018, and I'd love to see you there!

That doesn't sound as bad as I thought it was :O
Are there any competitions or stuff other than the ball to participate in or to watch? Or does everyone just swim in circles with friends? :P
If I end up going, I'd love to see you there, too!

Mostly just swimming in circles, then there's the group picture.

to be honest, we aren't sure there will be another mermania. Venessa and I want there to be and have done all the work, but the owner seems to have gone MIA for the last 5 months on the topic so we havent been able to move forward.
If it happens again, better security will be in place to prevent "drama', we'll have all pools booked for more space, and a whole day of available workshops for people to choose from in addition to making it an extra day longer.
there were several workshops offered last year, based on requests, but not many people registered for them.

yeah if it doesn't, Venessa and I are considering planning something else possibly but when it comes to Mermania, we don't own it.

I live in California and though having family over in South Carolina is as good an excuse as any to go to Mermania I am not really sure its worth the money to get from here to there.
though i've been with mernetwork since the early days of meryuku i'm still learning alot about mermaiding and stuff.
i have a few of the same reservations you have.
I'm more than certain there are a few mermaids that don't like me
i'm still a bit clumsy in a pool and find the huge pools there intimidating as hell
I'm also blunt and sarcastic and have been told I can come off as bitchy or cold
but if Mermania happens again I'm gonna make a goddess honest truth attempt to go.
so ig your feeling shy just come find me. it would be nice to know another person there

I really dont want people to worry about drama. typically it's not an issue. I know we keep calling it "drama" but the person who caused it all was banned and came anyway intentionally to cause problems for the organizers and a select few people they had issues with. if we did the event again, we would 100% make sure that banned people can't come. We have already been in talks with a hotel that actually has police on site and will provide tighter security and have assured us they wont even let banned people book the hotel. but it was a really isolated incident.
I have been to multiple conventions in addition to running this one and in general, everyone makes an effort to get along or just avoid people they don't like. And there's usually so many people you may not even end up running into the person you have issues with. So on that end of things, please dont be scared :)
as frustrating as it was that these people caused problems, they basically made it 1000% easier to keep them out next time because now there's been formal reports and paperwork filed.
Is Mermania pretty "new mermaid friendly?" I just went for my first swim with a tail yesterday.... And I'm hooked. I'm hoping to convince a friend to accompany me, and she's a newbie too.

I would say yes! I met some mermaids last year who had just started, and even though I have had a tail for nearly 5 years now, I was new to the community itself. Even though I am shy and only spoke to a few people, I did make friends.
