View Full Version : First Tail

I've been planning my first tail for months and now that I'm enrolled in a school for special effects it seems a good time! I always felt if I were a mer I'd be from the wetlands. Someone who hides in the mud and long grasses so my inspiration for this tail is the red tailed catfish.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170903/8d3fe3aa760aeacc90f11abd1e951c20.jpg
The first drawing I did of it was more or less to get the design down. There were so many possibilities!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170903/992ddbd7a36c5b43e0bd0b443243f6af.jpg
Since ordering my first monofin the design has changed but parts of it are still the same.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170903/8b0ed122ec0f45d11f65fc3bccab1f0d.jpg
I've started drafting a pattern for the fluke and have a duct tape body form done and ready for rigid foam.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170903/73e3403f3a0b0ca92671048bda0dd059.jpg
I will not be adding scales to this which is screwing up my idea of how to make this tail.
I'm waiting on large paper to start a paper body pattern, a board to start sculpting my fluke, and WED clay for the body. Wee! From there I'm hoping to check my proportions and start drafting the fins.
Right now my question is how do I attach the fins to the body once everything has been cured and painted? I'm still digging around but I haven't stumbled across an answer yet. And what is the purpose of powermesh? Ill keep you guys posted with progress photos and stupid selfies as things progress.

Assuming you are making it out of DragonSkin from Smooth-On, the power mesh is used to strengthen the fins.
And if you are attaching fins, you can do that before or after painting with more silicone. I did an individually scaled tail, so I attached mine before the tail body was painted.
Also if you are doing silicone, your fluke is going to be heavy and you should consider the stress it can put on your Rapid since it's a plastic monofin.
Hope this helps, but if you are using a different method then it might not be.

I had planned to use dragonskin. I take it the fabric is wedged between the two halves then? And would you recommend shaving down the ridges on the fin so I use less silicone or will that upset the structural integrity of the monofin?

I used the finis foil and it has high ridges, I thought of shaving them down, but after warnings of defects, I decided not to and I can't even notice them through my tail.

Okay, thank you. I may just risk leaving them be and see what happens. If it cracks under the weight I've learned my lesson and will invest in a better monofin next time.

if you are going to use dragonskin, you better use body-double made out of packing tape, as ducktape will stop curing dragonskin.

It never stopped the cure of mine. And it was always in contact with the ducktape.

I plan on sculpting on top of the duct tape. Silicone will never come in contact with the duct tape in theory but I'm flying by the seat of my pants because I'm not using a scale sheet.

I thought duct tape dummies were supposed to be done with the legs together? Is there a reason you did it differently?

Shimmy is right, those legs need to be together and the mannequin needs to be tight...leave about a fist-width between the ankles so you have room to put your feet in your fin. Remember, rubber stretches! The tendency is that there will always be a bit of bagginess in the back of the thighs. But i haven't figured out how to remedy that and be able to sit in a tail on land and not show mer-crack without that extra.
Packing tape works better than duck tape/duct tape because A: it's lighter; B: it's cheaper; and C: it doesn't leave glue residue on your straight pins.
You don't really need powermesh in your fins, but it can help attach them to your tail body. Powermesh as a base to your tail adds strength and helps the tail keep its shape. Otherwise, a Dragonskin tail without it could be too stretchy (Dragonskin is really soft) and you could have trouble with ballooning and slipping off. Powermesh is a lightweight, stretchy stabilizer/foundation.
Don't sand down the ridges of your fin...it will speed the deterioration of your fin. The constant flexing of swimming will eventually cause the plastic to fail and crack, usually right across, in front of your toes. The ridges will make the fin last a little longer, but it's been my experience that it will eventually break. I've worn out several. Bend the lid to a food container back and forth until it breaks and that's what eventually happens to your fin...it's the nature of that plastic. I think it's polypropylene.
Good luck!

It was easier to wrap it like pants, this way I can shape and modify it. I can stick it in the monofin and then take the legs together so it's all the right distance.
Thank you for the feedback, its much appreciated! Ill splurge on a fiber glass fin next time.

Thank you guys for the support and encouragement, it really helps.
Third pass is over half done, building up thickness, leveling it out, and cleaning up the ridges. I've run out of chavant again so now I have to wait until I can buy some more before I can finish the other half. Hopefully I can start cleaning the edges up and the shape, making sure it's symmetrical soon cause it's a little crooked, before adding in some detail.

the thicker it is the heaver it will be and use more silicone. I recommend using a clay or pasta roller machine. you can roll out sheets of clay that are even thicknesses. I found mine at a Goodwill store for like $5 with out all the attachments but one with the attachments will be about $10-$15 at a second hand store. But its worth the investment.

Thank you guys! I ended up scrapping the mold for the whiskers and I'll be starting over. It's just really messy and pretty much unusable. Also I fogot to mold in a hole for the pour spout. So we're just going to start over.
But! I got my first successful test pull of my mini scale mold! The first one didn't set up but I'm very pleased with how this run came out. I'll probably try to level out the back of the mold so it stops rocking and more evenly distributes the silicone later. The scales are not nearly as clean as I would like but neither is the mold. I'll probably mold up the small scale sheet again and try for a cleaner one later this week. For now this will do for paint tests.
Now I'm just waiting on a spray gun and mini silicone tests of my mica pigments to make sure none of them with prevent the silicone from curing. Full scale sheet is over half way done.43324

Huu huu huu~ Hip fins are molded!!! On to the dorsal and ankle fins. Which I may sculpt differently. I'm not sure yet. It'd probably be easier to sculpt it as one piece and do a two part mold instead of this. I'll have to experiment.
The left fin half is cleaned and sealed and ready to mold. The right one I just pulled and still has a bit of chavant inside it. 43361

Guys I feel like I'm legitimately finally making progress on this. I know I've been making progress before now but I'm finally getting to the point where I have pieces! It feels amazing.
Started sculpting the dorsal, I have more e6000 for the scale sheet, I did my first pull of the calf find and a whisker which turned out beautifully. My sprayer came in and now I'm just waiting on more silicone and a new needle/nozzle. I bent the needle of my airbrush in class so now I'll need a replacement of the .35 but I'm excited for the larger one to be coming in.
It's telling me upload failed so if you guys can see the attached photos let me know.

Okay, well it keeps telling me I don't have permission to add photos??? But my dorsal is mostly sculpted and has spikes! I need to grab some shim so it'll be prepped for fiberglass molding on Monday and my whisker mold is setting up with it's first layer if brushed in silicone. I may try to get it filled in the morning before class.

Maybe the file size is too big? That happens sometimes. Maybe try resizing them smaller and see if that works. Can't wait to see

Gods it's been a hot second. But surprise! Not dead. Let's try that picture thing again shall we?
Aaaand nope. Jeez, I have no idea what's going on. I may try this when I'm not on mobile. But! I got the first half of the dorsal molded, have two whiskers now, "glued" the halves of my calf find together so now they're ready for paint, bought a new punch for scales and am all around ready to get back to work! Need to grab some silicone caulking when I'm not broke again.

Thank you! My sister came out and we slammed the entire tail together in a day for graduation. Photos can be found on hag_effects at Pinterest. I'm still having trouble with photos here. I'll try re-sizing them later. I can't wait to get home and finish the paint and reinforce my seams now that I know how.
