Some people have tailmaking threads, other people write about their various gigs and I just swim a lot.
As a lifeguard and swim teacher who can get into several pools for the low low price of nothing, I tend to always have a tail or two in my work bag as well as my GoPro. I am constantly pushing myself and testing out brand new things, and I usually will take several gigabytes of photos and videos at every swim. It always works out that if I forget my camera I hate myself [emoji38]. Not everything I tests and film makes it out into the unknown right away, and I sometimes will forget how something went, so without any further ado, let me begin my recording of my madness.
__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________
Starting off September right with a massive mermaid meetup with my pod!
42004
We had tons of tail representation, with FinFuns, SunTails, Mertailor, FinFolk, and even a g-leta tail! One of my new friends (whom I had just met at a wedding earlier this week) borrowed my SunTails to go over her first monofin from wish. I had tons of fun and tried out a few different things. I attempted at first to wear my VirtuoSew monofin cover (https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/450881882/fluke-cover-monofin-cover-mermaid-fins?ref=shop_home_active_32) over my SunTails monofin with my Lunar Tide from FinFun but it just was not working for me. The straps were refusing to stay on my feet and I found it quite difficult to swim in. Luckily, my seaster Jaira (sporting a finfun ensemble) swapped out with me, allowing for a bit of an easier time swimming with the FinFun monofin pro with the traily swoopy bits.
41996
I also wore my circlet (https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/TheUnicornsPrincess?ref=shop_sugg) for the third time and had an idea to stop my hair from getting stuck. I put my bangs into a pony tail and stick that through the top of the circlet, out of the way. I only had a few hairs pulled out my the end of it, but the real culprit was this necklace.
41997
It was gifted to me by Sirencedes (https://www.instagram.com/p/BYQwAwygyqwmJKlEXjzQQX6iNOgf6UBMbk-USM0/?taken-by=sirencedes) and has this lovely starfish/rod clasp in the back but for some reason... that thing yanks our my hair like no one's business. However, I still really like it as it matches my top from VirtuoSew, who also made my arm fins!
But besides all that, we had a delightful time and definitely got everyone excited for doing more pod meetups!

Second diary entry here for a swim I did on September 6th,
I had to stop by the pool to pick up some things I left there after the meetup and drop off my newly recertified SFA award. Of course, I also grabbed my tailbag to swim for a second time with some pretty snazzy pants from VirtuoSew (https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/507010327/mermaid-leggings-ladies-leggings-adult?ref=shop_home_active_1). They're basically mermaid leggings, but with the look of my new tail from them! I tried them once already with a few different things, and wanted to try swimming with the Mahina again because I f*cking love the Mahina.
42000
You guys will probably be able to tell after a few posts here that I prefer one pool far over the other. Unfortunately my home is undergoing maintenance for now, so secondary pool will have to do. But going back to the swim, it was pretty quiet in the deepend as lessons were going on - I even had it to myself for a bit! The light wasn't awesome though as it only comes out of a tiny skylight and some small lights on the wall. Less light = blurry pictures, but I managed to snag a few good ones!
42001
Now let us talk about the pants. They are kind of hilarious but also incredible. Technically speaking, they are extremely well made to my measurements (could be a TAD looser around the ankles) and look sweet! Not your everyday mermaid leggings look thats for sure! I actually enchanted a small swim student who asked me if I was a real mermaid, so that speaks to the power of the Mahina and some glittery tights!
42002
I wore some Finis swim socks with it as well as my accessories from the last post. I really like the look of the bare Mahina with the leggings, as they have some nice blue hues to them, especially on the blended waist-like thing. The pants have some nice hip ruffles and ankle fins, so I would totally wear this for some form of mermaid walking parade thing!
42003
Overall, I had an awesome workout, and definitely left feeling the burn in my mer-abs! I did lots of deep water stuff, and pretty much sat at 2.5-3m down the whole time. The pants also kept me really warm, so that was a plus!
__________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________________________________________ __________________
I will continue this thread as I just keep swimming! Hope you guys enjoy it!

Today's swim was rather hurried after some emergency shift coverage that left me with under half an hour to try some stuff out. I swam with a brand new pair of "mermaid underwear" from VirtuoSew that had some hip bubble fin things sewn on top. They fit a little large but looked so cute, despite the inherent awkwardness of walking around in skin tone shorts.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170909/3b6f36bd138ce260772d63d8acb151f6.jpg
Unfortunately my gopro memory card wasn't working and I didn't want to waste time fiddling with it so these phone pictures were all I got of my getup today. I'm really establishing myself as only wearing the same stuff, but today I wore a cute flower I had in my possetion from Mermaid Bjossa! It matched the green of my tail - the sparkle green Nixie style from Aquatails.
Now those of you who follow my YouTube will know that this skin (I named it Crush) works pretty well with the Luna and the Mahina, but what about my old rubber fin the Mirage? Welllllll....
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170909/f02c4bdf0f43f4218e4ce8bab7740a56.jpg
I forgot how LITTLE that fin is. The width of the "underwear" part of the Nixie looked huge in comparison. While I still really like the Mirage, it's close to retirement. The straps broke, so I just wedge my feet into it and hope for the best. The footcramps are real and I have difficulties keeping it on my feet at times. The tail skin is also made for legs spread apart and the Mirage is very close together. I certainly felt a lot of drag from the tail skin around the monofin, around my waist, and with the extra fabric around my legs. I really had to tighten the drawstring waist underneath the mermaid hip bubble so it wasn't sliding around.

Now the hip bubble worked really well with the green and blue of the tail! I found it super cute and definitely dressed up a plain tailskin.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170909/5bdf053a3b8a349e2b0c6bbb11a09a21.jpg
It felt very large to swim in, like I could see and feel the fabric moving with me as I swam. I certainly didn't go very fast - I don't know if it was the monofin, the drag of the loose tail skin, the hip fins, or a combination of the three, but my dynamic apnea was still 18 m in 20 seconds which I consider to be not bad.

So takeaways from this swim: I really don't like the Mirage that much anymore, the hip bubble is very cute and I'll probably use it lots, and the Nixie style tail skin doesn't really work with a smaller monofin.

It's been a crazy week but here's what I've been up to!

Monday: first swim in Ariel tail by VirtuoSew with my finfun monofin.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170920/8550063476074391c50607fd3446d32f.jpg My gopro wasn't having it, so I decided on trying to film with my phone. Phone bags.... do not work and neither does livestreaming underwater but here's a few snaps I took.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170920/572020a1d199cb03369fdfe4c13fdb0a.jpg
Overall the swim went well and I'm pleased with how the hip bubble worked for me.

Thursday brought upon me a nasty cold but I was determined to swim anyways while slightly high on cough medication. I've taken to swimming before I teach lessons while kids are still at school and the pool is SO QUIET! Thus I had the deep end to myself and thoroughly enjoyed getting some awesome shots!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170920/05cbfa26d7690851fceb2b2b32b84ad7.jpg
I wore my Mahina with the Ariel tail again because I f*cking love the Mahina. It poked out from the fabric a little bit, but I don't think anyone really minds. I'm very pleased with how stunning it looks in general. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!

After my lessons my friend from my old college posted that she was going swimming that evening. I was a little sad at first but then decided to drive the 40 minutes to surprise her anyways! Because I'm an ADULT with a LICENCE and MONEY! I basically turned around from work and was out the door with my still-wet tail to go swimming for the second time that day.
I did end up using a different monofin inside, the Luna but it was definitely not as fast as the Mahina. Did seem to fit the tail better though!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170920/889ac751f8bea768863b29c73896b0f9.jpg
I don't know what exactly the state of my mental and physical health was but I was somehow feeling PEPPY as we galavanted across the city from one pool to the other after discovering the first one was closed.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170920/feb663467f685f7ba8671ae5bcac2457.jpg
Anyhow my sinuses hated me as I attempted to dive more than a meter down but I still had fun swimming with old and new friends!

In total I spent about 6 hours in the water that day [emoji28]

Well its been another long and exciting week, so its time for a recap!

Wednesday Sept 20th
So its finally here, the Super Secret Special Project that I've been talking about! I picked up my very first neoprene tail which is a gift/collaboration from Mermaid Moongazer! The tail is a gorgeous purple with white and some galaxy vibes on the fluke!
42169
I brought her out before I taught and received many positive reactions from my coworkers about my new baby! So yes, swimming in the tail. It was a different experience but felt very natural. I have the Hydra monofin inside (well it actually sticks out at the end which is a bit meh) but they work very well together. I was concerned about how floaty it is, and yes, posing is difficult but swimming is no challenge at all! I could get down to about 4m in a few kicks! I took it slow the first time I swam and wasn't really focusing on taking images, just trying to figure out this new experience.
42170
I left my tail to dry in the lifeguard room that afternoon and found that after a few hours it was almost moisture free! Decided to leave it overnight anyways though as I'd be back the next day.

Thursday Sept 21st evening swim
Wasn't doing great that day, had a rough week and was generally feeling out of it but I decided to swim anyways. It wasn't a super spectacular swim as it was evening so the pool was a bit more crowded, so I mostly swam just to relax and I kept mostly to myself.
42171
While underwater I was meditating on a name for the tail. Still haven't fully settled on one, but something very night sky related as the tail has galaxy vibes and was made by Mermaid Moongazer.
In regards to the comfort of it, I felt pretty good except for my calves. The fabric is super tight there so the muscles feel a bit tense as I swim. Other than that, it fits me almost perfectly, except for a tiny bit of gapping in the back but that's easily fixed by my fabric gap wrap by VirtuoSew. I love that thing so much although I feel like the long shorts don't cooperate with a thicker tail.
42172

Friday Sept 22nd backup mers
Aforementioned mermaid who gave me the tail recently got a monstrous silicone tail!
42173
She wanted some people to take her out on her debut swim and so myself and my seaster Jaira graciously offered to be her backup swimmers. We literally lugged 2 mermaid tails around Vancouver on transit all day until finally it was time to swim! Only really took video for Moongazer, but here are a few screengrabs of us.
42174
42175
I wore my sparkly blue 2 tails with my gap wrap shorts and a plain bikini and Jaira wore a simple ensemble featuring the frozen aqua from Planet Mermaid. The blue tails were in aide of matching mama mer! Seriously we felt like 2 tiny baby merlings next to her MASSIVE fluke! Nevertheless we had a fun swim together and I loved being able to add that bit of mermaid magic to a somewhat unglamorous first silicone swim.
42176

Saturday Sept 23rd swim with friends!
After a rather disastrous day of lifeguard training, I lugged my large tail bag via transit to the next city to visit some friends at my old school! After a fun evening if food and shopping (I maaaay have puchased an aqua light) we hit up the pool with a semi-awkward guy friend who may may not have a thing for me who knows. Anyhow, I wore my new tail for the third with my regular getup. Amy and Barancle Bek also have homemade partial tails but went with just monofins that time, Amy with her FinFun and Rebekah with her Mahina.
42177
I let my lanky pal try my hydra out whilst I attempted to swim with the FinFun inside my tail. I mean it worked but it took quite a bit of effort to go ANYWHERE. The girls agreed that it looked much more natural however.
Few photos were taken as GAH GoPro is dying even after i attempted to replace the memory card.

Sorry to hear you had a tough week, hope you're feeling better <33 the new tail sounds amazing! And the neoprene look is so smooth. I'm surprised it dried so quickly, I would have expected neoprene to take a lot longer (my mythic takes about 2 days) super awesome though, hope to see a video on it soon! :D

Thanks sweetheart! To completely dry it takes about half a day I've found. I will be making a video about it, but not a review as it is not quite a completed product.

Wed afternoon, Sept 27th
I swam before my lessons because I wanted to test out my "Mer-Frill" from aquatails that they sent to me as a courtesy as my tail did... not match the Luna at all. So away I swam with this weird hula skirt around my waist. I mean, it worked fine and did make the whole ensemble look better but I'll probably just end up using this as X-Mas decorations tbh.
42235
Anyhow, I had the brilliant idea to try doing some swimming with a hula hoop which sorta worked. More on that later.

*Later that day*
After my swimming lessons, I lifeguarded but couldn't find my underwear so just wore my Magictail bikini that I was wearing in the afternoon underneath my uniform. Because thats how I roll. After I was free to go, I simply stripped down and hopped in the lap pool. I decided to try out this old magictail monofin that had been in the guard room FOREVER. I have no idea where an entire tail came from, but I decided to put it to good use. I had googles and did some training laps with and without it. And wow. That monofin SUCKS! I have used one before but not in over 2 years. Wow. It's bad. No wonder they discontinued it. It is chunky and hard to actually kick properly. So stiff at the feet it gave me footcramp city. I NEVER get footcramps. So I ended up ditching it to just swim some laps and only used it in the deepend to practice bubbles and a few other things. It did feel nice to swim normally with goggles though and work on my human strokes and fitness.

Thursday, Sept 28th
I went swimming after my lessons which was a Mistake. I wore the neoprene tail with my suntails monofin and my virtuosew monofin cover wirth swoopy traily bits.
42236
It hard to put on with the 4 layers of fabric to force my feet through. And it was hard to swim and get down below a few feet. Not a great time to be honest. The tail did not cooperate with that monofin setup AT ALL, it looked bunchy and weird at the ankles and I was having a difficult time swimming. Now we know.
42237 (side note, this is the first time I was able to capture a decent open mouthed smile underwater!)
I ditched the tailskin to get equipment to sink the hula hoop as I wanted to try doing deep water hooping again. I didn't bother with putting on the tail again so I went with the monofin and floops. "WHAT THATS SO HARD HECK WHY" I just haven't learned. The SunTails monofin does not work for me if I put floopy traily bits on. Ditched the floops and went with just monofin which still low-key sucks.
42238
42239
I just can't go back to crap monofins after using proper ones like the Hydra and my Mahina because I f*cking love the mahina. I WANT to like the Suntails monofin so badly but I just... don't. Anyways, I practiced hoop stuff again and pushed myself a bit too hard. Ended up with a slightly messed up ear but I'm good now.

Meetup Saturday Sept 30th
I was a flop and forgot my camera. It's fine everything's fine.
We had 13 mers there! And had an excellent time. It was a success but like, it was super late so people were coming and going so we all didn't swim together amazingly. Tons of tail representation, and here are a few photos! Follow our Instagram @mermaidsofbc for more details.
42240 42241 42242 42243
Mermaid Moongazer took THE BEAST out which was awesome and Mermaid Annabella brought a beautiful latex tail and pretty much sold one of our pod members for it! Also it was FINTASTIC getting to swim with Courtney Mermaid again - prepare for some awesome stuff from the 2 of us soon!

Hello mer-friends! I was in a car accident about a week ago, and so I decided to take it a bit easy in regards to mermaiding as to not further injure myself. Self-care is good, especially as I tend to push myself farther than I probably should. Anyways.

Wed, October 4th:
I was early to my last day of swimming lessons and finished my report cards about half an hour before I was scheduled to get in the water, so I hopped into the tantalizingly empty deepend with a pair of flippers and decided to to a small training livestream! Didn't save any of the video, so what went on will just be a secret that the 4 viewers will carry with them forever.

Saturday, October 7th:
Those 24 hours were... something. For those of you who don't know, I work as a live AV tech, so my hours can be very weird as they usually take place after parties and events into the early hours of the morning. So my evening consisted of lugging my hardhat and steeltoed boots in a bag with a few mermaidtails on transit into downtown Vancouver. I met up with a friend for a late movie and needless to say, he was very confused. Anyways my shift went well and I found myself downtown until about 6am with a meetup 6 hours later. My solution was to crash on Mermaid Moongazer's couch (SHE IS THE BEST) then lug my mermaid tails to the pool where I was meeting up with a few other mermaids. I ended up only using one though, which was a bit annoying.
We had some awesome mermaid tail representation, from FinFun, Magicitail, The2Tails and a self made fabric tail with the Mahina to some bomb partial and silicone tails made by the owners! Amanda (@beebichu) was coming down from the Interior of BC so thats the main reason why we decided to swim together as her tail is still pretty new and spectacular! I wore my usual getup with my sparkly blue 2tail, which worked decently, but I've found that my virtuosew nude shorts could probably be improved by turning them into a bikini instead as I was getting some odd bunching.
Here is a quick video from our swim that I put together!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gh_3Ic6fj-M
and some photos:
Amanda, getting her tail on!
42282
42283 42284 42285 42286
All in all, the swim was pretty good, and I was happy to see mermaid Bjossa (red tail) again! We swam for quite some time and all of us wound up with VERY sore eyes from the chlorine. I still think it was worth it though!
_______________
Hope you all had a fin-tastic week! I'll hopefully be doing a few swims this weekend with my near and dear mersisters so look forward to those!

Happy Tuesday mer-folks! Not much went on for me this week, mostly just working my butt off and doing some camera op stuff this weekend but I did manage to squeeze in a few swims!

______________
Wed, Oct. 11th

I was doing a personal private swim lesson for my neighbour and had about an hour before I had to lifeguard afterwards so I decided to test out something that I have been meaning to for SO LONG: the Luna in my Mermaid Kat Shop tail! Now a bit of background to my MKS. I do like the tail, the colours are nice, the monofin is decent and the design is pretty good overall... but its not fully "mermaidy" you know? It doesn't photograph all that well, my knees poke through, theres a bit of billowing drag and it pills like crazy. Plus the hydra is odd and chunky inside of a spandex tail, so I don't use the tail that often. But all that changed when the fire nation attacked. Just kidding, I've just been using my Hydra more inside my neoprene tail, and I thought that the Kat (name is Aurora) could use some love too. I decided to actually swim in the bikini top that I was sent with the tail and my ruffle shorts along with the Luna and the tailskin.
4235242353 42354
I haven't used the full MKS tail much to get a good idea of the comparison, but it felt alright. I really am not a fan of the wide legs on a fabric tail, but the luna isn't quite as extreme in regards to separate legs as compared to the hydra. I was able to swim, but not all that fast. It looked very flowy and natural around the fluke as the fin was just a tad shorter than the pocket. I might test out Courtney Mermaid's larger luna inside this tail in the future. Who knows. The main reason why I don't like this tail all that much is that... I look bony. You can clearly see my knees, but the material sags in between them and the ankles and bottom of the feet are pretty visible. It is a flawed design in my opinion; which is my freediving-y fins don't often work in spandex tails. Thicker fabrics do much better with containing the drag and making everything look much smoother.
Anyways, another little rant I wanted to go on was about this bikini. If you remember from my unboxing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhOQBXNE9Yw) I was a little afraid of swimming in the top and I just have never gotten around to trying it out for real. But I decided to bite the bullet and swim in it after realizing that yes, there is good coverage. But uuuhhhh. While I felt good swimming in it (no slippage or ties coming undone) the fabric is just SO THIN. So like, the lumps were real. As someone who likes to post photos online, I'm not keen on subtle icicles poking through my bikini. I didn't realize this until later on though....
_________

Friday Oct. *13th*

I spent Thursday night in Abbotsford at my old school with my friends, blessing them with pizza as we watched the Riverdale S2 premier. (fun fact: it is filmed in my hometown and I've been to the diner where it was filmed #beforeitwascool) Anyhow, Rebekah aka, The Nautical Imp (https://www.facebook.com/impfish/?ref=br_rs) and I recently purchased two second hand Finis Wave monofins together and we had the perfect opportunity to try them out: being jazzy backup mers for Mermaid Zelda's first swim in her new Mertailor Spellbound tail!!!!
We were a tad early and Emma (Zelda) was a tad late, so Bek and I had a substantial amount of time to chill out and test stuff with our Waves. I wore my shiny green VirtuoSew tail and the monofin worked pretty well inside! It did slip around inside the monofin pocket as the built in elastics didn't fit it, but it worked pretty well on video. However, the light green fluke material did show a bit of the monofin (like the black parts) through and I noticed that in some clips my magictail bikini bottoms I was wearing showed through the darker green spandex which was a little unfortunate. Now regarding my top choice, I wore that same MKS bikini top and found that the icicle lumps were absent! It is probably because I was a little less chilly that day during a mid morning swim. Very interesting...
42348
Anyways, the Wave is a decent monofin and I'm excited to try more things with it! My impish friend stuffed hers into her FinFun Tidal Teal skin which did work width wise but needless to say, it didn't quite follow the contour of the tailskin.
42346 42347
After taking a few cute photos together, she stuffed her Mahina into her poor poor tailskin. My friend performs witchcraft you guys.
42349 42350
I went into *Camera Mer* mode and shot some stuff for her, like my newfound favourite aerial view and generally being a good Instagram Husband. That was basically the whole point of our swim, for me to perform my video magic on her and Mermaid Zelda, who finally arrived with her tail!
42351
And WOW it is stunning! You can see her unboxing on her channel, but may I just say that Mertailor has impressed me! We all had a splendid swim together, but it took us all 20 minutes to get the poor thing out of her tail. That was an experience and a half, but shhhhh heres the video, its fine. I am quite pleased with how the footage turned out!

____________

I was supposed to go swimming with Emma and Mermaid Ripple again on Sunday, but life got in the way unfortunately. BUT I did end up using that time to finally post my virtuosew review! It was a monster to edit, but I am pleased with how it turned out - give it a watch if you haven't already!

Hello everyone! Time for another recap of happy swimming times!

Monday October 16th

I had some time after my lessons to do a swim, and I decided to do a livestream! I've pretty much given up on trying to livestream underwater after quite some wresting with Instagram. I think it has something to do with the touch screen being interfered with the water through my phone bag. Pity. Anyways, the above water one is up on YouTube if anyone wants to see
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9399GSBrZI&lc=z22eexsonkudujm10acdp433gq5 zhvcykex5auvktl1w03c010c skip to 2:45 to see my thoughts on the wave in the tail.

But aside from my trials and errors with that, I had a pretty good swim, tried some new filming angles and playing around with the 10lb brick. I tried wearing my new Finis Wave monofin inside my Mermaid Kat Shop Tail, which worked better than the Luna tbh. The monofin is rigid but flexible, and I'm able to get a good kick with it as well as still do my regular tricks. It looks only slightly silly inside the tail, with a bit of drag at the ends with the fluke tips because, obviously, the wave isn't the same shape as the tail. There seemed to be some, but not as much billowing drag in between my legs, as the Wave has less separate foot pockets than the hydra or the luna. I think that this is something that I would try again, especially as I use my Hydra more inside my neoprene tail now.

After a rainy afternoon finishing my report cards I grabbed the monofin and mermaid tail that I had at the pool: the Luna and my VirtuoSew Ariel tail. (which by the way, i just put up a video of - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWGmB54LfFs)
I unfortunately lacked a swim top and so wore my teaching suit underneath and yeah... nevermind.

After a few laps in the tail, I decided to ditch it and just train with the monofin. BUT I was able to determine that I'm not a huge fan of the monofin in that tail. Its too swoopy and not as wide as the fluke area, leaving a ton of fabric to billow out.
So while I trained, I decided to try some flip turns which the swim team found hilarious. Might be something that I'll have to get better at haha. With just the Luna, I took a few photos while practicing my hand stands and breath holds.
