This is so interesting! I am writing a research paper about mermaid lore and origins.

WOW! How great of an experience and I love the topic.

I've done a little bit of research; one origen that particularly love: In the prime age of navigation and sailing in western civilization ( arguably the time most of our folk lore and fairy tales come from) . Sailors did not know how to swim. Infact most believed that water was deadly. Most Americans during that time drank beer and not water, did not know how to swim and rarely washed in baths. So imagine to their surprise when the sailors sailed to Thailand and saw the Moken water people, or Japan and saw the Ama divers, or Indonesia and saw the Bajau.... All these divers have been reported in ancient text to dive for 15 minutes underwater ( current world record is 11 minutes).. I can imagine if I was not a naturalist that and grew up during this time, how easy it would be to believe that these people must be part fish.

For me this is an idea that I really love. It's easier to believe than confusing a manatee with a long hair beautiful woman, and as a freediver it fun knowing that my sport may have it's roots influencing such a fun lore.

Hi Mermaid Kane,
I have just ordered this book may be helpful
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mermaids-Tale-Personal-Search-Love/dp/1553653777
I'd be very interested in reading your paper.
When I travelled around Scotland discovering the Selkies I was surprised with the huge connection with the seals. I spent 3 days on the same isolated beach spending every second with them. They were so inquisitive I really wanted to get in with them straight away but the sea was rough and I didn't know what they would be like with me in the water. Near the end of my trip I went for a swim not knowing there were any where near me then when they popped there heads up I was a little afraid but was one of the best experiences of my life as we played head nodding games with a pod of them. Tell me more and I'm open for suggestion of documentary ideas. :)

Hi Derek. Wow for the information.
I've just started to look into all this any book suggestion from your books of knowledge. Like I say I'm always up to develop my creative ideas of what I should do whilst travelling the coastlines of the world. I have came across a few plaques along some of the shore telling some of the myths already and been sang a folk song or 2. I really feel I'm getting to know how the mermaids and their connection with each culture that I encounter and only at the start of my journey. Please have a watch of my youtube video, Instagram and Facebook page with the links above and let me know your thoughts.

The video was really great! You are so lucky to have such a incredible experience.
Mermaid lore comes from all over the globe, as widespread as dragons. There are even North American native mermaid stories to look out for that are less known.

I also want to travel to Scotland and visit isolated places. Money is not a problem, but I will travel solo. So I guess it will be difficult to visit them.

There are no difficulties to arrange such a travel for one person. It will be a bit more expensive than half of the travel for two, but not too much. And you can check with Scottish Jeep Tours (https://wolfieadventures.com/) and send your booking request directly to them. My friends traveled with them to those beaches, and they said it was simply gorgeous!
