Hi! My name is Amethyst, and I live somewhere in the Portland/Vancouver area. I've been into mermaids since I was four, and my older sister read Andersen's the Little Mermaid to me. This was a few years before the Disney one came out.
Anyway, I didn't even know that there was a whole community of mermaids, or I'd have joined this site a long time ago. I don't own any mermaid tails yet, but I'm just discovering what's available out there. I perform on stage, and have volunteered at Faerieworlds for the past couple of years, so I'm pretty familiar with costuming, and am just starting to learn the depths of mermaid costuming, and realized that the $40 mermaid costume I have on my wish list might not cut it.

I don't have a mermaid name, but Amethyst is already pretty magical, and people who know me know me as Amethyst, so I might just keep it.

I've been surfing the information on this site to learn more about being a mermaid, and got sucked into a rabbit hole (whirlpool?) a couple of times looking at all the information. Does anybody know if mermaid classes are a thing? Taking classes have helped me to perform so far.

Anyway, looking forward to being a part of this community!

Welcome to the community! It's always pretty overwhelming when someone first finds this site--there's years over years of information here, so it's definitely easy to get caught in those whirlpools (I like that term) when you first dive in. In any case, please do use this site to continue your research into getting a tail :) It's important to stay safe while you explore new things and test your comfort zones.

As for mermaid classes, I've never taken any myself but I'm positive people on this site have and can give you great information.
Again, welcome and happy swimming! :mermaid kiss:

My best tip for you is to be patient about buying tails. I would start with a Suntails/FinFun/etc. fabric tail, and move your way up. Always read reviews. There are scammers out there.

You probably know this already! <3

I just found a podcast that looks promising! Maybe it's already been mentioned here, but I just searched "mermaid" in the "podcast" app and found what I was looking for.

Oh? What's it called / like?

It's called Cinderly's Mermaid Podcast, and so far, she's interviewed a lot of professional merfolk, and talked about Mermaid Camp. (Yeah, I found out that's a thing, and would totally save up for it.) It's fairly new, and only has six episodes as of right now. I've listened to the intro and the first two episodes.
