So I have scoliosis and i had to get spinal fusion and I have two rods that go down 2/3rds of my back. And I thought I wouldnt be able to swim again but turns out I can, but I cant do any flips. Any other mers out there with scoliosis?

I have scoliosis however I've been fortunate enough that I haven't had any problems yet leaving it untreated.

Me! I'm hoping to avoid corrective surgery. Fin swimming feels good though, good exercise and a good stretch for my spine. Sitting causes me pain.

I had no choice but to be t the corrective surgery as my biggest cure was 87degrees already and would have progressed more, which would have caused me breathing. Problems, digestive problems and my I ability to carry children. Still it is questionable if I can carry children or not due to the excess stress it would put on my joints and back (as I have never damage and ligament damage due to the surgery and fibromyalgia as an after result. But swimming helps and is fun ;)

Ok hi there, I have scoliosis as well and I plan on getting surgery for it as well. I thought after the surgery and it fully healed, we were allowed to do anything that other people (or mers) can do. I remember my doctor told me about a girl who is in dance and cheerleading and stuff like that and she got surgery for scoliosis too. If this is true....WELL IM DOING IT ANYWAY!!! IM NOT GIVING UP ON MY BIG DREAM!!! But for now when I see my doctor again I'll ask him and try to give you an update about it. Sorry if I wasn't much help. But I hope we can still do flips!

87 degrees, woah, that's extreme. Glad the corrective surgery helped you. I'm sure you'll get better and better at finswimming.

I have like, a 5 degree curvature or something. I have absolutely no issues with it and have never received any form of medical attention for it. I also have slight pelvis instability, which I suspect is related to my curvature. I have NO issues with that either. I do an effortless dolphin kick, I have a hydra monofin and a competitor monofin and my dolphin kick is really good.

I've had it since I was 13 and by the time I was 17, the doctor said that it had corrected itself because of how much swimming I was doing when training to be a lifeguard.

My swimming kept me from getting a severe curve at the start when my scoliosis was first noticed, but I swam competitively and due the spine not being aligned, my centre of alignment went so I couldn't swim straight, so my coach said I couldn't swim competitively anymore and I was kindly asked to leave the club. I tried to continue swimming but I had developed back back pain and gave up. It's the worst thing I did as I feel if I kept up the swimming I would have been healthier and wouldn't have developed such large curves, I had 2, 87degrees at the top and 56 at the bottom. My xrays before and after are amazing. Want to see??

Wait until your doctor gives you the all clear to go swimming. Im a little bit over three months out but I healed very fast. But it did hurt a lot but I didnt stop trying. Also wait a little but longer to start swimming with a tail/monofin. How far will the rods go down your back? Also good luck!

Wow, thats crazy! And I thought that 55 degrees was bad! I never knew I had scoliosis because I never had any pain. My spine looks like a bendy straw before my surgery but they got it down to 23 degrees. Yes I would like to see.

Most scoliosis patients are female. I've no idea how I came to have it, but ended up needing corrective surgery. It doesn't really prevent me from doing anything, but my country's military didn't agree and invalided me out of an active role.

Glad swimming has helped though. All the best Nia and Luna!
