Today I started on making my moulds for this new tail as I can't you hearts for this one. This time I cut circles out of 2mm craft foam with my die-cutting machine, glued a second piece of foam under the circles and covered it with worbla. I also made a mould for the star with worbla. ;)

So excited to see this tail cosplay; Sonico is one of my beloved waifus. Also, what an innovative way to make molds!

Finally I started on the tail it self. Body-double is made and covered in Lycra.
42645
Premade some of the scale I need, I know I need lots more, but I couldn't made them all as I didn't know how much I will need.
42646
And I start pinning the scales to see where they have to come.

Today I started working on the inside of my tail, glued the magnets on the right place with a special, very strong glue and sealed the front part with some more silicone:

I was wondering if anyone would make a tail based off of that character's figurine!
Great job on the execution ! What a fine tail!

Will there be videos of how it swims? I'd love to see it in action!

Thanks all for the lovely comments :) I use a translucent Triton (kids-size-version of the Hydra) for both of my silicone tails and a yellow one (the first one I bought as then they didn't had translucent ones) for my fabric tails. ;)
When looking if others already done it as a cosplay, I only found 1 and it was a fabric tail.

Starting to make the waist-ruffles ;) Cut white organza with iridescent glitter into 3 strip of 30cm by a little over 1m. In this pic I've already put 3 layers of tinted silicone on top of it (2 plain white and 1 white with blue iridescent shine).

I love how you use worbla- super smart idea

Mermaid Fenicia
02-03-2018, 01:41 PM
Thanks Ashton. For the molds of my first (two) tail(s) I used thermo-plastic beads to make them.

Ashton
02-04-2018, 12:09 PM
I tried worbla for a mold once, but then I made the mistake of putting a material that got hot on it. - Safe to say that experiment failed. But that is how you learn!

Mermaid Fenicia
02-04-2018, 03:23 PM
Yep, worbla goes soft when it gets warm/hot, but it safe to use with dragonskin ;)

Ashton
02-04-2018, 04:51 PM
Yeah, I forgot that when I was using a product that got warm when curing.

First I covered 2 plastic shells with lycra:

And then I covered them with pink colored silicone, this is the first layer:

Top and armbands are done, just in time to test it all out next weekend. Still have to make the wig (and find a good way to keep the stars onto the tail, I like to be that they are detachable, so I can use the tail as a blue/purple one).

Mermaid Fenicia

Not for the moment, as this is a cheap one, I'll make one (later) that will be more sturdy and based on a real (cheap) headphones.
