I wondered if any merfolk have found swimming in a tail actually tones the stomach muscles. I'm going to come out as a guy who's developed a bit of a midsection bulge. Every where else is physically fit.

From what I understand I would say so, considering the kind of movement required burns a lot of calories - especially with the bulkier tails. In a way they're like drag-training= the more stuff catching the water, the more strength/energy needed. Hence why they're not good for kids who don't know how to use bi-fins yet. I'm aiming on finding which of the pools near me will be ok long term with the tails to burn off my own winter padding. >_>:

Several mermaids have talked about the exercise benefits of mermaiding and there are also mermaid workout videos as well.

I know Raina Mermaid has a recent-ish fitness benefits article or video that covers the health benefits of mermaiding. I just can't find it at the moment. But Raina has some good info.
Of course you have to be able to go swimming regularly enough to reap these benefits. I personally don't get the chance to swim often enough that it could be my sole workout. I have recently started doing spin in the hopes that strengthening my leg muscles will help with mermaiding. I was also doing a rock hard abs class for a bit - which I need to get back into because I am sure that will help as well. Yoga can be good too and many freedivers do yoga. It helps you be flexible which is especially important since mermaiding requires a fluid movement. Before mermaiding, I couldn't do that movement that well!
