My Dragon Skin Tail In the Works

Ok so I have brain stormed up some stuff....And I would like to get some feed back from you guys.
Now This is my fist of many to come, yes I have read the bumping brains and horns of what to use for silicone and all that, well me knowing inside and out of latex...I am not fond of it when it comes to sun and water....because it will not last long... (Comes with being a costumer...this is just my first tail) So we have decied that we are doing this out of Dragon Skin.

and my concept drawings below are mine and would love feed back... and have plans (and will be adding more as I go)

This a project that is in the works for over a year or so... But I will keep posted, but in the mean time, I have started the making of another that is half half dragon skin and half Lycra...that will be on another thread.

Oh wow! I love your green (looks yellow to me) and purple one that is so beautiful and I don't think i've seen anyone do that combination on here yet. Also is that clay on like a mannequin arm? If it's dragon skin how on earth did you do that?

It does I want to scan it and see if it comes up more green its like a lime green, but is going to be more like a brown lime green color if that makes sense hehe but yeah, I thinking so far I am liking that one, I still have like 10 over that I am coloring just trying to find the time to it, but I will, but if I find a better green to what I am looking for I will recolor it and post it.
Yes its just my raw sculpt right now (all it is, is brown oil based sculpting clay... vary messy when its hot out so you have to keep it in a cool impairment to keep its shape), I have to head up to Denver and pick up my mold stuff and my Dragon Skin and finish it.

Well what kind of silicone are you using??? and I am using Lycra, I have been reading a lot on our last site that the silicone wont cure right (if I am correct) on neoprene (I have not tried using neoprene yet I don't get why it wouldn't cure if it will cure in a mold)... I know that we will be laying our fully cured Dragon Skin scales and fluke to the Lycra with raw Dragon Skin, I know that Smooth-On has a silicone adhesive that people use to repair their stuff with, I don't see why that wouldn't work But it dose come in a small tube and might be a little $$, I have not yet looked at the price yet on it.
I suggest what you take your sillicone and neorine and do a few test strips and do trails first before you do anything, one with raw silicone, then with the silicone adhesive http://www.smooth-on.com/index.php?cPath=11_1189, or maybe your can try a spray glue called 3M Foam Fast 74 (Orange) Spray adhesive (you can get this at like a major fabric store for $12) You will have to spray one side and the other then press together (for best results) and then let set and dry for a good 30min.... Note that this stuff can get varrrrryyyyyyy messy so be careful with where you do it. (I have not tried it with the spray foam, but its worth the try, it works wonders with plastic and everything else we have used it on)

Let me know what results you get, and I hope that I helped some, and if I come up with something new I will let you know....

Do you have to glue the silicone? I know that it won't cure on neoprene, but I thought that was when it was on raw neoprene, not the coated stuff. Am I wrong on this?

Well i don't see why you cant take cured silicone and silicone adhesive like from Smooth-On and glue it to neoprene like that, or use the Spray Foam Adhesive... but that would be the only way to use neoprene and silicone if raw silicone cant cure properly to neoprene... the Spray Foam is vary flexible so you wouldn't have any issue movin.
I haven't gotten my chance to work with neoprene just yet with silicone, I have with other things...but I see that if you wanted to go the neoprene way, gluing it would be the way to go... I might be wrong, thats why I would take a test strip and do a trial before you do a hole tail like that...

Just as a forewarning, your first design looks eerily similar to a color pattern that Eric has already made as a silicone tail. Thought you might want to know that just to avoid any issues. Again, I don't really think people can copyright or claim to own color patterns but juts in case you wanted something more original, there ya go.

I apologize for any miscommunication. I was just pointing out the similarities so that you would be informed. I myself have come up with tail colorations on my own that turn out to be very similar to something someone else came up with. No offense meant.

As long as it is not 100% exactly like his, she can make her scales, fluke, etc however she wants. As long as there is a slight variation she is okay.

But there are millions of people out there in the world that come up with ideas, and yeah it might come to the same as another persons idea...I am saying this now, I am not steeling his stuff. I do understand where you all are coming from, I really do, I do run into this a lot in just the costume life that we work in...

@Spindrift, yes it is typo, I didnt have a copper pen so I went with gold and liked it better...I honestly hate the color copper idk why just do...so yes the paper does have a typo on it my bad on my end... Sorry

you could make an exact copy of his tail and not get in trouble anyway, he;s got them registered on copyright as sculptures. All you have to do is show a judge you can wear it. lol dont let eric scare you, do what you want.

Juku I have been wanting to say that FOREVER but I am trying to hard to hold in the hate, lol. I thought people would think I was just being petty but um yeah, his tails are looking more and more like Thom's every day! He used to bug Thom for help all the time when he was younger, on mer yuku I found an old article written about him when he was a lot younger and it talked about it. I think that's why it bugs me so much he pretends he got where he is by himself no help no copying.

Also, he keeps saying his tails are solid colours now, so you cant possibly be copying if you use more than 1!

And the other thing is you can't copyright color schemes...so there's not even a point in the color claims! And it IS frustrating how he never gives any credit to any help or inspiration. I look at his site an only see him, no one else.

When I was a kid, I thought: what a great idea to draw a mermaid that had the tail and fins of a lionfish! I bet NObody has done THAT before! And then, of course, as I search the internet-- I see PLENTY of people have had that idea. It's a hurtful feeling when you come up with something on your own, and think it's a great idea, only to see that others have had the same idea. But I learned to get over it. It's not illegal unless it is true plagiarism, and otherwise, people will always try to emulate what they fall in love with. Artists paint "the masters" to learn, or just try to make a copy for themselves because they love it and want it in their lives!
We've ALL seen a BUNCH of Madison Mermaid tails as well as Ariels swimming around. I don't think it's bad. It's just always how it will be. But flat out PLAGIARISM IS bad.
I'm working on new tail designs myself, and I'm SURE that if they're a hit (god willing) others will start producing as well.

I wonder if Eric realizes he actually COULD be sued for exposing people to carcinogens through the products he's used in making his previous tails and his latex ones? I looked up and mentioned in another thread on mer yuku about the dangers of Alex plus etc and a lot of the silicone latex stuff being used and it's super dangerous. I had blood work done and showed some of the issues they warned of and it's part of the reason why Im getting a new high quality skin safe silicone tail. He has no info on his site and no warnings. All anyone has to do is proove the materials in their tails are causing them to be sick and he's in big doo doo. And since those materials are all ready proven to cause these things all someone has to do is get doctor approved. Interesting.
