Hello, i was wondering if there are any people out there making sequin tails... ive looked around a bit but i havn't been able to find any...
I've been considering making my own but honestly seeing as i have no experience sewing and the materials arent cheap i should probably just order or commission one...

If anyone could help me find a seller or someone to commission id be eternally grateful ♡

Finfolk makes their Mythic tails for around $1,000. They haven't said when, but they want to release more of them soon.

Ill have to keep an eye on their stock... although it will probably take time for me to save up anyway ((and convince myself to dish out $1000 to pretend to be a mermaid))

If u want I can show u the pics of the tail I working on. If u want I can make one for u. Just shipping and the materials u pay. I get them in bulk from my aunt so it's pretty cheap for me[emoji3]

I almost got a mythic for myself but that's before the reviews. Apparently the colour scratches off quite easily from those resin scales, that's my only worry

I've heard they fall off quite easily , I'm ok with being gentle but I don't want to have to be neurotic about being careful with my tail. It's like a house that has to feel lived in, if you get my meaning. [emoji102]

I have a Mythic and adore it... the color does scratch off the surface, but there's still iridescent color to the scale even when that happens. And the scales are easy enough to replace. I used and abused mine and didn't lose a scale until about six months into ownership. The one issue is that once you lose a scale, it's easier to lose others since they are sewn in rows and the thread attaches a few scales in a group. I've replaced probably about a dozen scales all told, or re-sewn on the ones that fell.

For some people, the maintenance is too much to make Mythics worth the trouble. But if you look it over after swims and keep up with it, it's not too bad. It's all just preference.

On another note, I saw a fully sequin tail recently that a mer made herself and the individual small sequins were really cool, but I imagine it took her forever to sew them all on. Definitely a labor of love, but worth it if you have your heart set on sequins.

A few years back i tried to make my owm digitgrade legs for a faun costume but oh boy did i regret that .. i spent about 300 total on tools and materials but in the end i screwed up so bad on multiple aspects of the project that i just had to call it quits and ditch the idea.
I have an aunt who sews who might would help me with a tail (she despises faux fur so she wouldnt help me with my faun legs) but its still a lot of money in materials and since i have 0 experience in sewing or sequin tails im still pretty afraid to try... also my aunt makes things like skirts and bags, i dont know if her sewing machine could handle neoprene..

I'm terrible at sewing... the only things I have successfully (kind of) sewn are fabric tails. They're easier than other patterns for me. You can always try small versions and see.

I have no doubt my aunt could help me make a stellar spandex fabric tail.. but ive heard spandex and sequins dont mix because of the way it stretches and neoprene is the way to go..

I made my sequin tail out of neoprene and sequins. Most sewing machines can handle sewing though neoprene and sequins without a problem as long as you use a heavy duty needle. I also used upholstery thread just so my seams and sequins would have some extra strength to stay attached.

I made the pattern myself. I took 3 blank sheets of newsprint paper (https://www.amazon.com/Strathmore-STR-307-818-Sheet-Rough-Newsprint/dp/B000KNLQD2/ref=sr_1_15?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1519681842&sr=1-15&keywords=newsprint+paper) and made a 1-inch graph on all the pieces and drafted my measurements onto it. It probably would've been easier if I used some pattern paper (https://www.amazon.com/Dotted-Pattern-Paper-45-Inch/dp/B009KCWGKQ) (since I wouldn't have to do all that graphing) but I wanted to get rid of my extra newsprint.

creating the graph on blank newsprint

connecting the graphed sheets

drawing my measurements onto the graph to create my pattern

pinning my pattern down on top of my (folded) fabric to cut

I've been slowly poking away at my attempt for a sequin tail that uses scuba knit as the base fabric. A bit heavier than spandex (talking about five pounds of fabric alone XP ), but hopefully strong enough to hold up to how I plan to attach the sequins.

No, they weren't too bad. I've seen a lot of tails with the shell-shaped sequins. I just picked these because they were bigger and filled up space faster.

If you're concerned about upkeep, sequins will be an even bigger challenge than the resin scales used on mythics. They're also more liable to damage as they're soft plastic, so you'll have to constantly sew new ones on as old ones fall off. This, alongside with replacing heavily damaged scales, can pile up quickly. If you're not prepared/capable of doing some sewing/heavy maintenance yourself, you may want to choose another style.

If you are prepared for that kind of work, by all means try to commission yourself one. Or bite the bullet and make one yourself--you'll have plenty of practice sewing scales on by the end of it

If i can get my aunt on board with the project i may try to make my own.. but i dunno she could probably help me make a fabulous looking tail... but it may not swim or drain properly :/

The big sequins in the photo are actually 1mm thick, so they're sturdier than the Cartwright sequins. They occasionally snap when you sew them by machine, but even my cheapest-Singer-I-could-find machine easily punched through them with a sharp needle. You just need to go slow. My daughter's sequin/neoprene tail lasted quite a long time without losing a sequin...although when we left it in the sun to dry, a few got too hot and curled up. :)

I bought sheet sequin fabric when I made mine (doesnt have much stretch if any at all so measurments need to be accounted for: best to make it a couple inches too big and reduce where you need t get a snug fit.) you can get reversible sequin fabric everywhere at the minute:

Hope this pic works XP This is a one piece tail I made (zip in the side)

If i can find a good neoprene tail tutorial i miiiight try to attempt this on my own...
I contacted finfolk about when more mythics would be in stock and it wasnt a very clear answer but it sounds like it wouldnt be till this fall..but i could have completely misunderstood hah

The Big sequins do look amazing! Scuba jersey is a great fabric to use as a base/liner its super soft, stretches uniformly and is not AS thick as neuprene but a lot cheaper XD
