Hi! My name is Mermaid Minnow, and I'm pretty new to the mermaid scene.

I'm not like most merfolk in that I did not grow up loving the little mermaid (in fact I've always kind of disliked Ariel), but I've always loved to swim. Being from a poorer family, I never got the chance to take formal swim lessons, so I had to teach myself to swim. To young me, it was more exciting to swim underwater than above, so I quickly became a very strong underwater swimmer.

It was a few months ago that I was scrolling through my Instagram and noticed that one of the people I follow was putting on a mermaid tail and swimming around. I was instantly interested and got my first tail in January of this year. Since then I have now collected 4 fabric tails and 1 silicone tail, and try to go swimming every day I can.

I'm always looking for new merfriends to show me new tricks, so I'm very glad I found this site! I'm living in Spokane, WA so if you are someone who lives nearby give me a shout! You can also follow me on my Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mermaid.minnow/ (I follow all mermaid related accounts back :))

THANK GOODNESS, I’M NOT ALONE. Ariel always kinda irritated me. I was a tiny raging feminist as a little kid, so the idea of a girl literally selling her voice just to be with a guy she’d never really met ticked me off. Plus I was a huge tomboy.
I feel the same way about swimming underwater. As a kid, I was the best at Beaver at my neighborhood pool. (That’s basically sharks and minnows, except the person who gets tagged must have their head above the water, so it usually involves violently dragging people to the surface. It’s fun.)
Anyways, welcome to the community! Would you mind sharing some photographs of your tails?

Yup I discovered underwater swimming in much the same way. Welcome!

That led me to freediving--I hold a cert, but have had to give up the sport for a few years now. I do own a couple of fabric tails and a competition style monofin tho ;) Do you do it as well?

Would love to see your tails and learn more from you. Have fun swimming around Mernetwork, and see you around!

Hey there!! Welcome c: I'm new too, so far being on this community has been super fun. Granted, I haven't participated much, but the level of creativity and genuine fun I see in videos is so contagious lol.

Welcome to the forum! I also am much stronger under water than above, for much the same reason.
