Ok I just seen something recently crazy about "Otherkin".

There are people who identify as mermaids. I'm not to the type to judge, but if you came up to me and told if I identify as a mermaid I'll say no because I can't breath under water like mermaids do and the extra benefits that comes with it. It's pretty much a hobby to me and a dream, don't get me wrong I'm surprised of the commitment these people go through! Plus sometimes OtherKin use this as an escape from real life and disorders. For example there's a girl who identifies herself as a dragon and said she has ADHD like me and uses her mind as an escape from her reality and purely identifies her dragon-half openly. What do you guys think of OtherKin?

I have nothing against otherkin, because I, myself, am mermaid kin. One of the main rules when it comes to being other/fiction kin is that you still have to be aware that you're still a person. I may enjoy being considered a mermaid or a part of merfolk, but at the end of the day, I'm still aware that I cannot breathe underwater. Despite the fact that I wish I could breathe underwater.

Same, I mean, I generally identify as a mermaid, as I know others in this community do to a varying degree. And I've been told by a few otherkin that my experiences and feelings line up with being mermaidkin, but I generally identify as a mermaid (Mermaiding) first because it's easier to explain to people in the context of the subculture, and people don't argue as much with the "Oh, but you know you're not a REAL mermaid right? What if I splash water on you, a hur dur dur?"

Sorry, anyway, the mermaiding community has become such a perfect home for me that I don't really have to consider whether I am mermaidkin or not, but for people like dragonkin, etc. who don't get to have a whole community of people like them, its very important to not spread such misinformation. Otherkin are really just like us (mermaids) but instead of mermaids, they're dragons, elves, winged wolves, etc.
