View Full Version : Tail with regular flippers instead of monofin?

I haven't been active on the forums at all in the past year, but I've been enjoying the heck out of my monofin and am working towards a tail hopefully over the summer! Even though I have a monofin, I have a friend who doesn't and isn't interested in getting one. She thinks mine is too clumsy as compared to regular flippers. I was wondering if there have been any tails made with regular flippers already.
I've seen a few pictures, but they all looked a little silly because they were still trying to replicate the look of a monofin. But what if it was intentionally a split-fin, like the Wakin goldfish?

Has anyone seen a tail similar in design to this? Do you think it's even feasible while looking nice?

I learned with flippers instead of a monofin, and foxmoon used to make them that way too

You could fit a Rapid or any other round shaped monofin where the orange is, and for the white areas have them as long flowing bits.

there are some threads planning a split tail with flippers, like selkie tails and such, but I've not seen a finished tail like that so far.

My very first tail had a pair of bi-fins in it. And I saw someone make a very lovely seal tail using a pair of bi-fins (to re-create the flipper/feet of a seal). It's certainly do-able.
I think one of the downsides is that doing a mermaid-kick with a pair of bi-fins is a little more awkward and less efficient than with a monofin. You certainly can't swim with bi-fins as they are intended (by kicking them individually) if you have fabric encasing your legs down to your ankles. My first tail became more comfortable to swim in for me (and a lot faster) when I exchanged my bi-fins for a monofin.
I guess it depends on what you're going for. If you want that split-fin look I say there's nothing wrong with using bi-fins in a tail. They are, at least, far cheaper than monofins are.
