1st Tail

Hello, I have been researching for a long time on how to make a tail and have chosen to use foam disks to make the scale sheet form. What mix of plaster is best? I want something that will not crumble as I use it. Any ideas are most welcome. ^_^

The goal is to make a tiny silicon tail for my daughter. Not to swim in, but to ride around as a mermaid in. She currently has FinFun tails and the cloth tails I make for her. So this will be some added fun.

Hey Kira! Sorry about the delay. I believe a lot of tailmakers use monster clay, for the initial mold. Since you're using foam you'll probably have to find a way to seal it/ fill any holes (depending on the type) so it doesn't inadvertently ruin your mold. And now for the information you requested! (Just figured I'd say that first.) As far as plaster goes I find that molding plaster/plaster of paris (have a link: https://www.homedepot.com/p/DAP-25-lbs-White-Dry-Mix-Plaster-of-Paris-10312/100123682) is a very popular choice. If by mix you mean the ratio, it should be best to simply follow the instructions on the container. Plaster shouldn't just crumble if prepared and used correctly, though it will break if dropped and is fragile by nature. If you're not dead-set on plaster you could also use fiberglass resin (it would take about 2 gallons).

As an added note, I'm sure you know silicone is very expensive, and that's not including the other materials you'll need or your time. In fact, a smaller silicone tail costs almost the same as a full size one. If your daughter is younger that also means that she will outgrow her tail and that it won't fit, even in a matter of years.

Also designating her tail for only dry use will further limit the value (since you're not able to get as much out of it versus the resources you're putting in). However if dry-use only is because of her swimming capability then I definitely understand, only you know her capabilities. Though it may be better to postpone this project until you know she can swim in a silicone tail (if she can't currently).

There are already so many tail-bans, misinformation and fear for the safety of others, (even if they know perfectly well what they're doing). Sadly one mishap could ruin it for everyone, so stay safe and have fun!
