Here’s a little inspirational story about a friend of mine I thought I would share. True story. No names, please.
I have a very close mermaid friend, we’ll just call her Beatrix. One of the sweetest people I have ever known and a beautiful mermaid. She’s not in it for any jobs or gigs or whatnot, she’s purely about the joy of being a mermaid. It’s awesome.
Beatrix, like many people, had a mertailor tail for her first realistic tail and was planning on getting another at some point. Making her own was not something she thought much about. Anyway, there is another person to this story; another mermaid who also made her own tail. They were FB friends, not very close but cordial. Well, this other mermaid had begun to make some very aggressive statements about others on her wall, making threats and yelling about how she was going to get her fans to fight for her (against what, who knows). Beatrix, being a very peaceful person, asked her why she was so angry. I like being angry, said the other mermaid. Beatrix said perhaps you should just calm down and let things go. It’s not very mermaidy to be so hostile. Well, the other mermaid completely flipped out on her. Various insults were made, but one stood out to poor Beatrix; the other mermaid mocked her for having a mertailor tail, and said “I guess there are those who can and those who can’t” meaning of course making a tail. This insults not only Beatrix, but anyone who buys a tail due to time, money, skill, or whatever. People who buy a tail should not be discriminated against. They are mers too.
This ignited a determination in Beatrix; she would indeed make her own tail for her next one. And it would be incredible. Well, I can tell you that it is almost completed after many, many months, and it is fantastic, unlike any tail I have ever seen. It does not resemble mertailors, Thoms, or anyone elses. It is completely an original creation designed to reflect her. I am so proud of her for what she has done, and for taking what could have been negative and making it something amazing. She took an insult and made it into a challenge, and succeeded beyond her wildest dreams. It goes without saying that she is no longer friends with this other mermaid, who went on to attack several other people I know over their endeavors as well.
Moral of the story? Take from it what you will. I see a wonderful example of not letting anyone tell you that you can’t do something or are not good enough because of whatever reason. What do you see?
