Sweam Hydra Monofin Review

I'm going to start off by saying I love, love, LOVE this monofin! I don't rave about things often, but right now I really want to sing the Hydra's praises.

I had originally planned on only giving it a test swim, them going about my time the way I normally do at the beach, but the 'test' was so fun that I found myself pulling it on and heading back out.

I took it to the beach today and spent over 4 of the 8 hours in the water swimming non-stop. The straps stayed put, the foot pockets fit well, and this thing propelled me through the currents and waves like a dream. I even tried out an emergency removal in a spot with significant depth to the water-it popped off with little effort (and no hands), and floated up to the surface. I was able to spin, flip, swim sideways...I can't give a good distance judge since it twas the ocean, but I could easily go 30+ feet on only a few fin flicks. I was even able to move around in the shallows (less than 12" deep) by giving a much more gentle kick.

I mean it when I say I spent 4 solid hours swimming! I hit the water and didn't come back to land until I absolutely had to stop to get something to drink. My husband even tried to use it and is now talking about getting a Minos to fit his bigger feet :D That's a pretty big deal in my household since he prefers less physical activities!

The only real cons for me so far are the straps-they stay latched just fine while the monofin is on, but once I take it off I can't get the outer clasp on either foot to stay latched so I was worried about the possibility of losing one of the straps in the water. Adjusting the size on the straps is a little finicky and hard to do as well, but this also means that they stay put on the size I set them to. And I didn't feel it until back on land for a minute but I developed a sizeable blister on the bottom of one toe-something that will probably not happen again with better fitting neoprene socks.

Mine is the blue. I would have loved the transparent one, but this was a gift from someone. I really want to get a 2nd though so I have a backup if anything happens to it :swoon:I can't wait to find/make a tailskin for it!

I love my hydra. You can get replacement straps which don't clip on so you don't have to worry about that coming off. All but two of my current tails use the hydra.

I got mine from amazon.
Fiddling with the straps (which ALWAYS come loose in the water) is the one thing I hate about my Hydra.

Last time, when I tried to tighten the strap a bit, the clip in the middle even fell out, and I had to dive after it and then repair the fin for a whopping 10 minutes in the cold water. Not fun!

I'll definitely look for the replacement straps! I'm happy to hear that you use the Hydra in your tails. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to use mine since the side clips bulge out so much.

I can't remember where I saw them, I was linked and have since lost it. Its like a rubber strap with holes which fit over the toggles on the sides of the feet, bit of a pain to get on but they don't come off.

Yeah I know that feeling, not fun loosing a strap.

I was going to use it in my silicone but the price of getting one at the time was way to expensive to ship here, but it will be in my next one. I've used it in both fabric and neoprene with no problems.
