Just realized I put it this in the wrong section.

Hey fishes,

I have a few questions about how mer society works, and was wondering if anyone wanted to share their thoughts/headcannons? (I guess I'm trying to build a mental mer encyclopedia.)

So here they are: (feel free to add other headcannons if you so desire)

-How do mer politics work?

-Do all mers have magic powers? Do pods each have one particular mer with powers?

- Are all mers capable of growing legs at will? Is it something you have to learn? Is it granted to you?

-How long can mers survive on land without ever touching water?

-are mERMAID EGGS A THING??

-How long do mers live?

-How do mers measure time?

-Do tails naturally change colors?

-Can you talk to fish?

-Do all mers speak both English and Mermish?

-What are the types of mers?

-What are the differences in temperment and physiology for various species of mers?

-Do other mythical water species exist?

-Do/can certain pods choose to migrate between saltwater and freshwater?

-What's the deal with humans? Do they know we exist? We we like them? Are we just chill?

-Why do sirens kill people? Is it intentional?

Hey Holly! I think the answers to these questions can vary. There are mers in so many different universes in works of fiction, so I don't really think there's an objective answer to most of these. I think you can decide for yourself what answers would apply to your mersona.

I have researched mer lore for years. To be honest, it's all across the board depending on your country or culture. let me see if i can do this:
1. Mers maintain a pretty fluid relationship with each other, dwelling mainly solitarily or in pods.
2. Some mer have powers, actually most do. Selkies can change their appearance, Merrow have a magical cap, i believe Melusine have healing abilities, Tritons can call the wind and tide.
3. again depends on the lore. selkies get legs at will, however the little mermaid of Hans Christian Anderson had to take a potion that made her land life agony. Usually, mers get legs whenever they want. they dont care about logic.
4. Depends. Ashry can survive at night, but not in the day time, and so long as there is mist. Selkies and Merrow can, but they return to the sea as soon as they are able. there is one mer that if her hair dries she dies on land.
5. I dont think ive ever encountered this in my research so maybe.
6. centuries
7. They dont
8. not really
9. some cultures can
10. Mer typically speak the language native to the local land people
11. too many to write here
12. Mermaids are nurturing typically, though some lure sailors to their deaths either out of spite or tragic love, the mermen are violent and rash, sometimes eating their own children.
13. yes eay too many to put here
14. i suppose so, but local culture is typically what i study
15. mers are well aware of humanity. many are facinated, others want to kill us if we set foot in their homes.
16. some kill because its fun, others fall in love and forget we dont have gills
