Hello everyone! *waves* :)) New Mermaid from Nashville, TN

Hi everybody!I'm 22 years old, but about age 5 at heart, lol! Don't really know what I'm doing but I sort of just know I love swimming and all things MERMAID! :D So I bought my first monofin and am patiently waiting for it to come in the mail. I'd also love to get connected with you guys, especially if you're a mermaid in the Nashville area. Do any of you have any advice for a beginner mermaid? What's your favorite thing about being a mermaid? How old were you guys when you got your first tail?Can't wait to hear from you all!!

Welcome to the MerNetwork. As long as you don't rush into anything, you'll enjoy this community. The main advice I will give is make sure you are comfortable swimming in a monofin before using the tail once you get one. Finding a pool to use a mermaid tail at is as simple as showing the lifeguard the tail and asking if you can use it as you rarely get no from that method. Calling and asking will more likely get you a no if they have no clue what it is just to be safe fyi. This merman got his first tail at 36 so we are at all age and even have a discord chat. The favorite thing of being a mer is how open most people are and friendly. My best advice once you get a tail is to try to keep your mersona separated from your personal account on social media if possible. Once you get your first picture with a tail and post it on Facebook, there is a thing call the "new mermaid" phase where you will get a ridiculous amount of friends request. It's crazy but yet entertaining. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks so much for your advice! I've really been trying to take it slow and do my research but it's all so new and exciting haha! :) I can't wait to try out my monofin though. I'll definitely wait until I'm comfortable swimming in it before I move up to a full tail.

What first got you interested in the mer world?

I actually never intended to become a mer originally. Ever since I was in the 7th grade, I always wanted to scuba dive but was afraid of water. In my 20's, I wanted to make a business and run it but I still always wanted to scuba so I figure if I look around, there has to be a way to combine the two. By accident, I became aware of the mermaid community back when Mermaid Melissa was brand new. I remained watching the community silently as I allow my fear of water control me. 2 years ago, a local mer came onto the mernetwork and something clicked in my head then that I should try this. Plus the fact my niece has an obsession with mermaids and this could be my way to beat my fear. My niece backed out of joining but I joined anyways. It was the best decision of my life. Mermaiding got rid of my fear of water that controlled most of my life so all that left to raise enough money to learn scuba. In the short two years, I already got 1 gig under my belt as I was working with professional mermaid on her gig. I was actually more mertender on that one and the guy with the camera for that event. I still have my dream of getting a pod going and managing a couple mers on getting gigs and such like a manager. I lack any acting ability to be a pro merman but my knowledge of the community (except for tail making) is excellent.

I'm sure you have goals. Do you plan on being a recreation mermaid or do you plan on going professional?

My other niece has a wedding on June 1st so there is a chance I might attempt to get a pod swim going in the Clarksville or Nashville if I'm able to make it to her wedding.

I also finally got my monofin today! Swimming in it was amazing! Seriously like a dream. Those things are SOOO fast! It was actually a little intimidating because the only pool that was open today was the deep one, so I literally had to just jump right into the deep end and go from there. But seriously, such an amazing experience. I can't wait to swim again. It's all I've been thinking about like all day. Unfortunately, the pool manager came over to me after about 30 minutes of swimming and told me that they'd banned monofins -_- ughh! Do you have any recommendations of ways to get around that? It sounds like a lot of pools are cracking down :/

Oh my goodness, I'd be so up for that! I can't guarantee I'll have my tail yet but I've got my monofin that I can swim in :)

As crazy as it sounds, it was that easy to get rid of the fear of water as a merman. I got to the point that enough is enough and I can't let the fear control me no more. My thought on my mind on my first day of mermaiding is that I would pay more attention worrying on the fact people will be staring at me in a mermaid tail and not so much on my fear of water. It actually worked (though my dolphin kick was horrible that day). I feel in love with how natural it felt swimming that way and I been hooked since.

I haven't started up the company yet. I had plans but last year was just straight up horrible I forced a year break on this forum and the community to focus on myself as I did everything I can to avoid one person...who later became friends with my ex. I ended up making more money fixing people computers then I do on mermaiding so I'm thinking of changing my angle do more of a marketing/mertender approach as that works best with my computer knowledge and managing...plus that what my only mer gig count as. Regarding the pool with the monofin ban, you'll end up having to find another people. At least you got 30 minutes in before they told you not too :) Based on your location of Nashville in your first post, I would reach out to the music city mermaids on social media as the first choice. They had to practiced somewhere before they got big. My local YMCA allows tails so they are very much hit or miss. Take your time to decide if you want to go pro or not. You don't want to get bored with something you love so there are pros and cons to everything.

I'm so sorry to hear about your year last year. I imagine that must have been so hard feeling like you had to have space from the group. But I totally understand that sometimes it's just best to focus on yourself and clear your head. The marketing idea sounds like an awesome angle to come from, especially since you know a lot about computers. That's like a perfect combination of both worlds.

That also so cool that your fear just went away like that! Haha, I think I'm gonna have to get more comfortable with other swimmers staring at me, too. I wish more people would try out a monofin, though, instead of staring awkwardly because I'm swimming in one. They don't know what they're missing out on, though :) But swimming like a mermaid with the monofin is amazing and actually makes swimming feel so much more easy and fun. Tbh I actually felt like I swam better with my monofin than without. But I agree, I don't want to go back to that pool and get in trouble for breaking their rules. I think there's a pool that's about 50 minutes away that allows tails and monofins. I'll go there for now until I can find a pool that's closer.

We have two pools in our aquatics center! The rec pool goes to four, the lap just to five.

And I do! I have a finfolk fabric tail, but I haven’t been able to swim in it yet. I work out with just a monofin pretty regularly though.
