View Full Version : Dolphin Rape... WTF?

I heard on the tv that dolphins rape people. My natural response was WTF? No they don't! So I started poking about on the internet to find the truth. I'm sure I haven't read everything on the subject, but from what I've read so far I don't see any proof!
They claim that dolphins use their penises to grab people by the wrist or ankle, and pull them to underwater rape caves where they rape them repeatedly and leave the corpse.
The only thing even close to proof that I found was that there was apparently a study where they dropped decoys into the water near male dolphins, and they grabbed them and pulled them under. The people later found the remains of the decoys in underwater caves. But we've also come to accept that dolphins are intelligent creatures. I think it would be pretty obvious to a dolphin that a giant doll was not a person. Furthermore, we still have NO proof they raped the decoys, or even that they themselves broke them.
And also, just because they may grab people with their penis, that doesn't mean they intend to rape them. I'm sure it could be very scary and uncomfortable for the person, and of course there is a danger of drowning if they pull you under. However, dolphins don't have hands; if the males have penises that can easily grab things, and they wanted to show us something underwater, doesn't it make sense that they might think that was the best way to do so?
What do you guys think? Are dolphins getting a bad rep here? And if they are, shouldn't we as mermaids be stepping in on their behalf with more accurate information?

Dolphin penises can grab things? XD OMG!!!!! I'm dyin' here! My baby must think there's an earthquake 'cause I'm shaking so much- it just TOO funny!

Holy Crap! Ya gotta be freakin' kidding! Right?

MermaidMisty

Dottie: Yea, that part made me laugh too lol.
Alveric: Nope, I'm not kidding. Apparently the idea was made popular by Aardvark NYC, a clothing store, who claim that 14 dolphin rapes per year are reported in the USA (but didn't add in any source as to where they obtained the information), and the company has decided they must spread the news by posting stickers that say "Dolphins rape people" on public property everywhere they can (people have started buying these stickers from them and posting them up themselves as well, or so they say).

I suspect someone is pulling our tails. :p

I'm with you, Al. That does not sound plausible at all. Not saying it's impossible, but every dolphin I've ever heard of a human meeting has a had a very sweet, gentle demeanor. That or really hyper, like a 5-year-old.
Never heard of a dolphin rapist.

alright, just looked it up and am scarred for life, but dolphin penises are too short to grab things. they look like round toungues, and it's obvious a dolphin could not rape a person. I'll bet anything it came from this video I found. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJHv3EDTX6w
Very weird dolphin behavior, but not violent in any way.

REPEAT: DOLPHINS DO NOT RAPE PEOPLE.

Kanti

I don't think they have such prehensile penises that they'd be able to grab you with it xD
Seems like less effort for them to just grab you with their mouths xD
Even so, I actually don't doubt it. Dolphins (especially bottlenose) are very aggressive and
in sometimes "rape" may not be rape but rather a display of dominance. I used to have
rabbits and the dominant one would always hump the other but there was no actual
penetration, he just did the little hump to show who was boss lol
Perhaps if this is true, the dolphin is just so large that it may just exhaust the person and
eventually they'd drown.

With that one dolphin, Moko, the people around the village said that he would actually try
to get frisky with tourists and women.

While it seems the actual way the story was told is a bit over-exaggerated, the actual action
IS plausible. At least I see it could be xD

Okay, after further research, I've confirmed that they can't actually grab things with their penis, they can just move it at the base (which they claimed was enough that they could hook people with it and drag them). And an animal humping someone isn't rape, in my opinion, or we'd have a lot of rapist pets.
Kanti, I agree it's more likely a dominance display, but considering how often dolphins save people I'd think that if a person got tired playing with (or getting humped by) a dolphin that the dolphin would save them.
But regardless, we all seem to agree it's unlikely dolphins are actually raping people. So they're getting a bad rep. Shouldn't the mermaid community gather together to find a way to save their honor? I think so. Let's think up ways that we can do that.

I wouldn't care even if they did xD
Honestly, they're animals and animals are pretty unpredictable and they do things we
sometimes can't explain. I don't think badly of them even if this is true. I mean,
its a HUGE dolphin. Domesticated dogs hump people all the time and we think nothing
of it. Same concept different animal lol

Kanti, I don't really care if dolphins hump people, either. But like I said, I don't consider an animal humping people to be rape.
Jesse, thanks for the input. The video title says the dolphin raped her, but we can see that he didn't. Made her understandably upset, though.
But this is my point; why are dolphins being promoted as rapists when they're just humping people? Like Kanti said, dogs hump people all the time, and we don't call them rapists.

I think it's because dolphins have a reputation for being so intelligent. It makes them more responsible for their actions in people's minds.

I understand that dolphins are very sexual, and will have sex with humans if they can, however, male dolphins cannot have sex with any human without killing them, even if it does not drag you down to a cave. I know more details about this stuff than I will mention here. I have been in contact with a few people who know way more than you want to.

Kanti

Nah I think Misty hit the nail right on the head.
The video Jesse showed was literally the exact same thing a dog does. It just sort of
gets on your leg and annoys you for a little, it's not ACTUALLY RAPING YOU. Yet
people use that word, probably because the dolphin is a scarier situation that your or
someone's dog.

It's actually a really hilarious situation if you think about it. That dolphin may have
been a "teenager" dolphin in the sense that he's not a juvenile anymore but he still
acts like one. He's probably really bad at courting females compared to the other
more mature males so he never "gets any" lol. He's probably super horny and so
desperate he'd try to get something from a different species xD

MermanJesse
04-12-2012, 02:10 AM
^ I agree somewhat.

I think he may have gotten excited, such as other animals do.

At least it wasn't a shark trying to get her. O.o

Kanti

I dunno, I think animals get pretty desperate after a while. Especially dogs we keep at home.
Most dogs will NEVER get the chance to have sex in their entire lifespan. Think about it. You
get a puppy and raise it to live with you. If it's your only dog then it's probably not going to get
to see another dog often enough to get to try anything with it. If you have 2 dogs chances are
you'll purposely buy two of the same sex or keep them separated most of the time if you don't
want any puppies. So really, the only dogs that DO get to have sex are the ones meant for
breeding.

It's pretty depressing when you think about it. Especially when they're pretty young. If you don't
neuter your male dog, his top priority is to find a female dog. If you think teenage humans are horny,
they've got nothing on teenage animals. Not only do their hormones run wild, but animals don't have
any morality codes so they can do whatever they want most of the time.

Anyway, I digress. The dolphin was probably just SUPER horny and had no other dolphins around he
could try to have his way with. Another thing that supports this thought is that dolphins show a LOT of
homosexual tendancies. Often younger males will form couples where they often treat each other as
mating partners. Since they have so much testosterone and no willing females, they just need to compromise.

^ Pretty cool video :'P but be warned lots of kinky animal sex lol

Even though he was not a shark, I think people who are in the water with dolphins really need to pay attention to what is going on because dolphins can kill you easily.

I can honestly say I never expected this kind of topic to come up here.

MermaidMisty

Ray, as far as having more information than I'd care to know, I'm one of those people that would rather know a horrifying truth than a blissful lie or neutral half truth. As far as not expecting this sort of topic... well, it's dolphins. I love dolphins and I assume that many mermaids and mermaid enthusiasts would share the sentiment. If any beloved sea creature suddenly started being promoted in a bad light when previously it was promoted as a hero, I would expect the link between land and sea to be the first to examine the facts and fight for the side of truth.
Kanti, a very valid point about dogs that I never really thought about. Poor virgin doggies...

Kanti
04-12-2012, 03:04 PM
Yea I agree basically.
And I don't find the topic weird at all. It's just a topic about sex and sex happens
to be a central theme in nature. It's very interesting to see how animals handle things
and in this case, you may probably reconsider swimming with wild dolphins or a rogue
dolphin who may appear to be a bit too "friendly".
Talking about a topic like this may actually help people be more prepared when it comes
to certain situations. Especially since, yea, we all like the ocean and would probably
love a chance to swim with dolphins. Well, after knowing this, maybe you'd reconsider
thinking that dolphins are the loving, friendly little creatures that wouldn't hurt a fly.
They're wild animals.

Yea, people never really consider it, but dogs are basically slaves. At least cats can get out
and sometimes have a bit of freedom. Dogs don't really have any say in ANYTHING. Where
they go, how often they get to see other dogs, when they get to have sex or eat. In a way,
having a dog as a pet is sort of cruel.
I feel bad about it, really. I'm pretty certain my dog is a virgin. If I'd have thought about it
sooner, I'd probably have taken him to dog parks more often and at least let him hang around
other dogs. It must be depressing for them to not be able to see their own kind.

LOL <worked with 2 MALE dolphins.. not in water but enough to see things to make you go .. EH.. uh.. OK 0__0 !! Lol Their sexual beings they use sex as a handshake, a bonding experience or of course in Play. Hell I've seen a male dolphin " hold " things with his wiener a bat, a frisbee, a sea turtle and the list can go on.. Yes they have a prehensile winkie doodle, So do Orcas and other toothed cetaceans..(one male orca in particular gave me a goodbye i'd never forget -swimming by with it all hanging out ) Male dolphins get excited over anything lol.. especially when their young and just figured out they could put it in places and it feels good.. and of course teenagers who have nothing but 'doin the nasty' on their mind..lol

One experience I had was a male dolphin who would "hump" the underwater viewing window just rubbing his ding dong all over the corner cause there was a waterjet there.. yeah.. I was an educator at the time. it wasn't easy explaining that to kids.. Hell i avoided it all together, "he had an itch", "he has to pee".. etc.. Their animals and they have instincts and intelligence.. but like most males i wonder how intelligent they are when suddenly an urge takes over.. Eventually they put up a mini curtain so "humpy" the dolphin could do so in privacy.

Kanti, I'm reminded now of something said by Ron White regarding his dog Sluggo... "Because sometimes you just feel like getting your dog laid". lol
Lanai, a good point and some very funny stories. Now I'm wondering if perhaps a male dolphin could play underwater baseball with his wiener lol.

BAHAHAHA xD
Lanai that's hilarious I would've loled so hard if I saw the dolphin humping the glass
Lmao once we went to Seaworld during spring so all the dolphins I suppose were in the
mood. In one of the dolphin underwater viewing tanks, one of the male dolphins was getting
frisky with a female then his you-know-what popped out and a little girl was watching and
said "Mommy look! What is that? It looks funny" xD
A perfect instance for a mother to awkwardly explain sex in the middle of a vacation.
In the end I think she just pretended not to see it or told her it was nothing haha

@Misty: I LOVE Ron White!! Haha I need to go get my dog laid xD
Poor thing, he's so old ):

You just copy paste it most of the time. If you want to be able to do it, you have to download some strain of
the Arabic alphabet or something. I looked into it once and decided it was a pain, so everytime I want to make
it I just go to: http://lookofdisapproval.info/
