View Full Version : Glowing jewelry

Hi guys. I have been searching for some jewelry that can help me see better in the dark, or in lake water, if I swim at the lake this summer. I'm not talking about party necklaces (You know, the kind you snap and it glows for a few hours? No). I'm talking
about actual jewelry that's pretty. Ever seen Atlantis: The Lost Empire? I was once able to find something on the internet that looks a lot like Kida's necklace:

http://mernetwork.com/index/webkit-fake-url://F6ECD908-5611-4F71-9D4F-47B6225B9203/kida32.jpg Gah. I can't get the picture to show up, no matter what I do.
( Look here, if you would: http://s631.photobucket.com/albums/uu40/CharlotteMence/Atlantis the Lost Empire/?action=view&current=kida32.jpg&mediafilter=images )

But I lost the link. Has anybody ever seen jewelry like this, or possibly know how to make it? Maybe something with a light in it that's replacable? I think it'd be really fun and pretty in the water, not to mention useful. Thanks for reading!

Michellerobison on the forum makes really pretty jewelry that glows in the dark. Etsy might also have something you'd be interested in.
I've always wanted to know the name of the "style" Atlantis has. It's the same style featured at abandoned ruins "Mythos" in Universal's Island of Adventure.

Thanks for replying, I'll have to look into that.
As for the style of Atlantis, I don't know, but I loved that movie when I was younger. Incidentally, when I draw, my drawings look somewhat like that, but not so...I dunno...clean.

I saw this clip at Dick's today. I think it might work. It's not pretty, but I don't think it will be very hard to turn into a necklace. I also don't know how bright it is; I assume that it soul be like a small flash light.

Ps-if the picture didn't attach I will add out again later. :)

Hmm...jewelry that glows bright enough to help you see better? I've had a lot of different kinds of glow in the dark beads, and most of them only glow enough to be seen in the dark, they don't emit enough light to illuminate any surrounding areas. But if you ever find jewelry that does glow enough to help you see, more power to ya.
The necklace that kida wears glows really brightly. What if you tried messing around with little LED lights? There's a lot of rave websites that sell LED lights that you can put in almost anything. There's a lot of LED accessories that you can use too. Like light up shoelaces as the chain of the necklace. Just a thought.
Ir what about fiber optics? They can be made into darn near anything you want, I once found a website where they made things like shirts, hair clips, dresses, even table cloths, bed spreads and even pillows out of fiber optics. Im sure you could make a necklace out of the, and the feathered look of the fiber optics would make it look really mermaid-ey, the picture I have in my mind would make you look like an abyssal fish. You could get a waterproof battery case or something, try messing around with ways to make the electronics work underwater. Some sort of water repellant spray maybe? I dunno.
Actually, I think I might order some of the hair clips and mess with them so I can wear them.
Back to glow in the dark beads, if you let them sit outside in the sun they'll get super charged, so to speak. That's all I can think of.

Well, WaterWolf, I have been searching for only the brightest of the bright, but as for seeing better with it, you're probably all too right. ( I really did not mean for that to rhyme)...
I've been fishing around on Etsy for a little while. I didn't know how much glow in the dark jewelry was available! But I'm still looking out for the piece that's just perfect for me.

I wonder if LED lights or fiber optics could actually work. I'd have to hide the battery pack somehow though... *looks down at bra area* hmm...

JK. But seriously. O.o

This is the website where you can check out the fiber optic stuff. http://www.lumigram.com/catalog/index.php?language=enAnd this is the website where I see a lot of LED accessories that might work. http://www.raveready.com/mobile/default.aspx#C100

It is from the same person as mermaid dottie gave a link to but it explains how it works and gives suggestions to make it supercharged with led flashlights. I know that there are stones that some people use in their home movie theater to be able to see if they turn all the lights out and I think they are pretty bight maybe you could search for that. Also there is a chemical that when you place it in light it gives it the property to glow for a little while, so maybe you could buy that and make your own jewelry and accessories and fill it with the chemical. My uncle made me glow in the dark bubbles from the chemical, it was lots of fun!!!

I bought a pendant and it's beautiful! It shines a lot if you are under the sunlight, not with artificial light.
Now I've seen the quartz pendant ... would buy that too!
P. S. also took the bracelet, but it is very delicate, it broke after two days ... (has fallento my daughter) but clover13 was kind and send me the stones for free ^^,

Aww Nim, I'm sorry your bracelet broke. My vial necklace is a little more delicate than I thought as well. I cracked it when I swam with it on... I'm too rough on my jewelry. I'm going to epoxy over the crack when I get the chance but it glows well and I think it's very pretty in a modest way. Hopefully the resin will keep it together! O,o

I actually have a necklace I made that glows...but I have to be in near complete darkness for it to be super bright so I'm having trouble taking a picture of it. But here, I tried...it's a necklace associated with the Shadowhunter/Mortal Instruments & Infernal Devices fandom, so you probably won't understand what it is, but it does glow. I think I might try this technique on some other jewelry I make :)

Oh my gosh! That little octopus is ADORABLE. The sword necklace is also very pretty. I had no idea this thread had been updated, haha!

I'm pretty excited because I'm probably going to have time to relax and craft tomorrow (today...I'm staying up late AGAIN).. Seeing the thread again makes me want to break out the glow in the dark Sculpey! Plus, I still need to fix my poor little purple vial..

I wonder how swimming in black light might look.

There is a type of diving known as "fluorodiving", where one uses blue lights and yellow filters to see the fluorescence of the corals and invertebrates.

quick question for an obviously talented jewelry maker: any ideas of what i can do with this pearl i got yesterday? i bought it with one of those cage lockets....and you open the shell yourself...but the pearl is too big and oblong to fit inside. :( saw your pendant with the pearl inside a shell and love it...but have no idea how i would safely adhere the pearl to a shell without the fear of it falling off while swimming. i understand if you don't want to throw me a pointer if your etsy store is your means of income...but any advise would be truly appreciated. thanks
