Hello all! My name is Sabrina, but my nickname is Haunter, and after some long awaited time, I bought my first fabric tail and am diving into the world that is mermaiding! The final nail in the coffin for me was watching Courtney mermaid and Mermaid Raina's videos on youtube, and I'm still finding more mermaids to watch as well, especially for reviews and tips&tricks. A little about me is I am originally from Minnesota, which plays into my mer name, "The Finnesota mermaid, Haunter", but I am currently land locked in KS but in a few years my partner and I are hoping to move to Florida. To start things off, I love Renaissance festivals! The Minnesota Ren fest will always be my fest, but I hope to go to more and experience what they have to offer. I made my outfit for the fest last year and oh boy, am I not a good sewer... I am so glad the hems were not visible  But! It came out great and I loved it! I am also a huge lover of Halloween and all things spooky, which is why my first tail is from Mertailor and it is the "Hocus Pocus" Too tail. That baby is beautiful :swoon:It's not going to be done until next month, so I don't currently have any water time or profile photo with it on, but I am being patient yet excited for it to be done!. Maybe one day in the future, I'll try and make my own tail, I've always wanted an Orca that looked spot on to the creatures, but I'd need help with the sewing part, and making a monofin that was the same shape as the real fluke. Oh! my favorite animal is also the Moray Eel, such cute and intelligent babies! Another thing about me, is I am a choir kid, so I love to sing. I'm hoping to start practicing guitar or piano in the next few years, but for now I have an Ocarina as an instrument so I'm not just singing all the time, lol. I also listen to all genres of music, the only one I'm not really a fan of is rap. One last thing I'll say about myself is I make jewelry and other crafts to sell, I have an Instagram and Facebook set up that have only one or two posts at the moment, but there is where my pieces will be up to see until I decide if I want to make an Etsy or a professional site for my pieces.

If anyone in or around the Wichita KS area has a pod I could join, I would be very grateful, otherwise I do make multiple yearly trips back up North to my home waters for holidays, my birthday, and the Renaissance festival and State fair ;)

Nope, I want to make an Orca tail in the future, I'll leave a link of the tail I ordered from Mertailor :)

That looks so cool can't wait to see the pictures when you have it (only if you're comfortable to show) what fabric do ya think you will use?

I'm not sure yet. I am nowhere near able to make my own tail so I haven't thought of it  I'd probably use a thicker fabric, probably something Scuba grade to help it have some longevity and have a good look in and out of water. A plus with the Orca tail as well is I won't have to worry about printing colors, so I would only need to get solid white and black fabric to work with. The only thing I think is going to be the hardest, aside from the sewing, is going to be the monofin needed to make an authentic fluke, it wouldn't be a tail made to be fast, that's for sure, but it would move decently through the water I think.... Maybe a firm to mid-soft silicone monofin could work? :thinks:I'd have to find a monofin caster who could do that though.

Hi Finnesota!
Welcome to the group! Have fun.

Here is a monofin that looks like an Orca tail. It also lets you swim really, really fast.

Here is a not that great photo of it in a Orca skin, made from a FinFun Orca skin.

Thanks, and that is quite a spot on monofin! A bit out of my price range at the moment and would still need a little of a touch-up, but it could work. As for the finfun skin, it is for sure an Orca style, but isn't exactly what I'm look at for my design. Most Orcas do not have any gray along where their white and black coloring meet, but the whales do have grayed areas, almost a curvy stripe behind their dorsal fins, some don't have a visible mark. Mine is going to be a traditional/common Orca, black/white with a dorsal and pair of pectoral fins and I'll probably lightly paint the dorsal stripe on.

Yes! I watched Raina and Courtney's, videos on Youtube, and looked up some other reviews before I decided on one of their tails. I honestly was looking at a Beta Swimtail before, but before I could purchase from them, they stopped selling tails a few months ago. After some searching online I found out Mertailor and Finfolk started to make fabric tails which made me so excited! I hadn't looked up anyone else because I was so set on the Beta tails, I only really kept updated on Merbella and Swimtails. Now I just need to see if I can continue to wait patiently for it to be made and shipped (lol), and keep looking for a nice top to go with my tail, there's so many styles and shops to choose from

Welcome!
Your taste in music sounds like mine. I just found the band "Apocalypse Orchestra" which I highly recommend looking up.
If you found Courtney Mermaid on YouTube, does that mean you have also found Nerdmaid Faith? I highly recommend checking her channel out: https://www.youtube.com/user/Faithonthebass

Another channel you should see is Hannah Mermaid's YouTube channel. She doesn't have tutorials/reviews, but she is way worth checking out to be mega awe inspired.
