Hi! I'm in North Carolina as a well. I currently live in Durham but I will be living on Morrisville starting this summer.

I'll be swimming in the waters near Topsail Beach the first week in August. I might have a tail... I might not. It depends on how backlogged Stevi is with her tails.

I would love to get together with other mers in the area this winter! I know the aquatic center near me in Morrisville has the pool open during the winter (it's heated and has a bubble dome over it).

BTW I was over in Cary at Bond Lake Park today and saw a Mermaid bumper sticker. I wonder if it's another mer in the area?

COOL! I'm on the opposite side of Raleigh (Morrisville). It's not that far of a drive to or from Wake Forest.

Neat :) I'll be moving to NC round about December 30th so if we did decide to do a meet up maybe sometime after that?

Triton-Mahtlinnie

Sounds like a plan. I leave NC Jan 16th, so sometime in the first couple weeks of January would be swell for me.

Sea Pearl
10-29-2012, 12:34 AM
Yay! We'll have to try and find somewhere to meet up. Maybe somewhere where we could swim would be cool. I haven't had much of a chance to practice swimming in my tail since I got it.

Triton-Mahtlinnie

IvoryLeopard mentioned the aquatic center at Morrisville. Do we know if it allows tails?

Sea Pearl
10-31-2012, 08:25 PM
The aquatic center might be a good place to go. Especially if it's heated during the winter :) I'm not sure if they would allow tails, some pools are cautious about things like that, best thing to do would be to ring and ask if they allow tails in their pool.

ivoryleopard
11-04-2012, 11:54 PM
IvoryLeopard mentioned the aquatic center at Morrisville. Do we know if it allows tails?

I asked about monofins but not tails. I hesitated to ask the lifeguard about it but I already got the weird look when I had to explain what a monofin is. She did stay that fins are okay since she does do laps in them and as long as the pool is not over crowded.

It's a pretty long pool but it only goes to 5 feet deep *grumble* I'm not complaining too much about that since they do keep it open year round.

I can ask about tails when I sign up for year membership. Does anyone know about the pools in Cary or Raleigh?

Early Jan sounds great to me. I'm between tails at the moment so it'll give me some time to patch up the practice tail and work on a new tail.

Triton-Mahtlinnie
11-05-2012, 12:33 AM
Well, the city of Raleigh has a list of all the city's pools.

http://www.raleighnc.gov/home/content/PRecRecreation/Articles/AquaticsHoursOfOperation.html

But there aren't any real specific rules posted up concerning fins. I'm betting it's a "call the pool" case by case basis kind of thing.

ivoryleopard
11-05-2012, 12:49 AM
For right now, the one in Morrisville is our best bet since it is open year round. Could find out how deep the other pools are, when they are open, and if mermaiding is allowed. I would love to find a deeper pool to swim in. I'm tired of accidentally scrapping my fluke on the bottom. :-/

Sea Pearl
11-06-2012, 02:14 PM
It sounds like Morrisville will be the best bet so far and that it's open all year round is nice too. I've come across a lot of pools around here that close for the winter period. 5ft isn't very deep and will a tail I'm going to need all the space I can. I haven't had much experience swimming in my tail yet so I'm not going to be the most graceful lol. I would be worried too about scraping the fluke on the bottom of the pool. But it's better than nothing :D I'm looking forward to getting to meet some of you.

ivoryleopard
11-06-2012, 02:29 PM
Likewise! I am excited and can't wait to meet other mers in the area! Even with babying the tails I still have scrapes and tears from shallow pools. Don't get me started on banging my head on the pool bottom! I do have a good laugh when parents of kids (that are about as tall as I am) yelling at their kids to not go in the "deep" end of 4 feet! I'm 5'5" sans tail!

There's also Cary YMCA. I think it may be indoor and have a "deep" section (depending on what the definition of that is). There's also the Triangle Aquatic center or whatever it's called in Cary.

In Raleigh there's about three that I found that are indoor: Buffaloe Road, Pullen Park and Millbrook Exchange. I don't know what the prices are yet for any of these places.

Triton-Mahtlinnie
11-07-2012, 08:05 PM
Do you have to be a member of the Y to use the YMCA pool?

ivoryleopard

Do you have to be a member of the Y to use the YMCA pool?

I have no idea. That's a good question. I would like to try out places before I commit to a membership. For general use, I do like that the Morrisville Aquatic Center is in walking distance from my apartment complex. The pool is a decent size but it would be better if it's larger (and deeper).

So mermaids, I know we've been chatting about having a swim meet up in the near future and I just wanted to see how many of us would be able to come? ivoryleopard
11-29-2012, 12:39 AM
Okay I found a list of pools in the triangle with either a heated bubble or indoor and the numbers for them. The ones that look promising for January are Morrisville Aquatic Center, Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center (Raleigh), Millbrook Exchange Center (Raleigh) and Pullen Park (Raleigh). I have not research the ones in Cary but there is the Triangle Aquatic Center. http://www.triangleaquatics.org/

I am going to ask them about us being non members and if we can mermaid/monofin in the pool especially if there's going to be a group of us doing it.

I've noticed that these pools are no where near each other and all charge different rates for residents and non residents. For the most part it seems like $10 and under and at the most, 20-30 min drive (with traffic). How do you all feel about that?

ivoryleopard

None of those places are that far from where I am going to be living. And I honestly don't mind about the 20-30 minute drive either. Hopefully some of the center's will let a group of us wear our tails/monofins in their pools.

ivoryleopard
12-03-2012, 09:38 AM
Okay Called these places and tried to not sound crazy when I asked them. Seriously, I think the aquatic centers in our area thought I was prank calling!

I don't have a clear answer from these places on what we can do so it anyone else wants to try calling, please do so. Some did mention that we can rent a couple of lanes.

Morrisville Aquatic Center
pool goes up to 5 feet and I am waiting on a call back. I asked a lifeguard on duty if it's okay when I was there this summer but that was for just one person and it would be different for 5 or more people.

Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center
Closed on mondays so I did not get to talk to anyone. It has neat features like a lazy river and waterslides but their pool section does not look very deep. Kinda looks like it's meant for little kids. It just opened this past fall. http://www.wral.com/lifestyles/goaskmom/image_gallery/11556912/

Millbrook Exchange Pool
5 1/2 deep. Suppose to get a call back. The lady I spoke to said if we needed to that we could rent a couple of lanes depending on what time and day we are planning on being there.

Pullen Park Aquatic Center
14 feet deep! Yeah! Did not get an answer since the guy I talked to did not know how to answer it. I left a message with their manager. Hopefully we will get a call back.

Triangle Aquatic Center
The only other pool in the Triangle area that has a DEEP section from what I have heard. Left a message.

HOPEFULLY I will get a call back if they don't think it's a joke. I would advise that if anyone else has time to please give these places or others that they know of in the area a call. Just so we can get a quicker response back.

ivoryleopard
12-03-2012, 11:17 AM
Good news! So far I have a call back from Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary and they said YES WE CAN! ;) Hurray! The day pass is $7 dollars but we could also rent a couple of lanes either in the rec pool (up to 7 feet) or the competition pool (9 -11 feet). The prices renting lanes and our total group day pass (5-6 mers) are comparable to each other.

ivoryleopard
12-04-2012, 04:18 PM
I also got a call back from Millbrook Exchange today! They are another possibility for us. The guy I spoke to is very nice and seemed interested in having us use their pool.

Triton-Mahtlinnie
12-05-2012, 03:41 PM
Sounds awesome. I say go with a deeper pool if we have the choice.

Well, I'm raring to come. I'd be available the first two weekends of January. I assume we're planning on a weekend/ Saturday or Sunday meeting?

ivoryleopard
12-07-2012, 03:22 PM
Okay looks like it might be Triangle Aquatic Center since it's the deeper of the two that called back. Haven't heard back from Pullen Park which has the deepest pool (14 ') in the area. TAC did say that they are going to be having swim meets on the middle weekend of January (the 12 and the 19th). Other than they they are not crowded.

My schedule is pretty free as far as I know for now. I'm fine with all day Saturday but only Sunday afternoons if we are planning on meeting on the weekends.

Triton-Mahtlinnie

Would Saturday the 5th be too early in the month for people? Since the Aquatic Center is having a meet on the 12th. It looks like the pool has open swim from 10:30 to 6 in the competition pool, and 1:30 to 6 in the instructional pool. (I'm not totally clear on the diff between them is) What times are best for people?

From what they told me, the instruction pool is a shallower one (4 or 5 feet) and the competition pool is the one that goes to 9 or 11 feet deep. The Rec pool is somewhere between the sizes.

I should be free to meet then. We should get a tail count on who's going soonish. I know everyone is super busy this time of year. Is there another way that ya'll want to be in contact with each other, like on facebook or by email?

Merman Dan

There's also the Greensboro Aquatic Center (http://www.greensboroaquaticcenter.com), which allows the use of monofins in some of their pools (not the deep diving pool, though). I somehow failed to tell them the monofin was attached to a tail, though. ;)

Triton-Mahtlinnie

Exdraghunt, where are you staying in the Triangle Area? I don't think this pod does? I haven't looked to see if we do or not. Is there away to know when people reply back on threads here without constantly checking and remembering the threads you commented on?

The Greensboro Aquatic center sounds cool but I did get the thumbs up from the guys at Triangle Aquatic Center. The person I talked to seems interested and curious about us.

I'm trying to remember what threads I posted on. I usually end up having to search for my screen name to pull up the threads.

Saturday Jan 5th is fine with me. It'll give me time to finish up my new fabric tail. Daniel (husband) and I have a concert to go to Sat evening. So I'd say anywhere from mid morning to afternoonish? We could also go to lunch if you guys and gals are interested.

Here's a link to the Triangle Aquatic Center's schedule for this week: http://triangleaquatics.org/Calendar/WeeklyCalendar/

Well, free swim starts in the competition pool at 10; so then until 1 or 2? We could always catch lunch at the mall, since it's right next door to the pool.

Also, good lord the pool's scheduale is confusing :U If I'm wrong, feel free to tell me off.

I didn't get to the meet up either, Shimmygoddess. I caught a cold a week before the meet-up which was back in January. I was really disappointed I missed it but from what I heard only two people made it. Have you gone swimming at all at any of those places you were looking into? We usually get a Y membership for the Summer, but I am not sure if they allow tails at the one near me. I'm here in East Charlotte, I work in Mint Hill.
I sometimes swim at the Marion Diehl Rec Center Pool on Tyvola Road (about 2 miles west of SouthPark Mall). Waiting for the uptown Mecklenburg Aquatic Center to reopen in June. I also drive to Greensboro NC to swim with Merman Dan and take care of my mother who lives there.

I'm in Columbia, SC! I also regularly visit family at the coast. Columbia is basically an hour and a half from anywhere in the state/Charlotte, NC. Let me know if you're near the area and want to flip fins some time! :)

Hello all. I'm a new mer from SC. Forgive the new profile. I live in the upstate and travel to Charleston and Atlanta often. I'll be taking my tail wherever I go as soon as it comes in and am planning to do some intensive swimming training over the summer. Looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi guys! I was wondering if the facebook page for Carolina Mers was made? If so I'd love to join it! If not, I actually have a facebook group made that's SUPER small that I made for girls in my area that were interested in becoming mermaids so I could share events and tips on mermaiding with them. It's called "Mermaids of the Carolinas" Because we spread around NC/SC area. It's been dead for a while but I'd love to see some life in the page again especially with meetups and events because I'm dying to have some mermaid fun this summer while I have time to travel!
