Hey mers, long time no see.

I recently received my newest tail, a gorgeous great white shark inspired tail from Shello Mermaid. I absolutely love it, I really do but it's too loose in the waist and a bit too long. I would really appreciate it if y'all could give me some tips on how to alter it so it fits me better. I'm too scared to mess it up, before I jump in to alter it.

well, that should be comparatively easy.
Since it's too long, you can double the edge of the top as far as you need it, and sew in an elastic band there into the fabric tunnel you're creating.
You don't even have to stitch it all way round, just as much as it needs to be secure.

Important is to use a zigzag stitch. Don't use a straight stitch.
Do it by hand if you can, the result will be much better.

Does zigzag stitch make it stronger? Like have a strong grip for the tail?

Zigzag stitch stretches with the fabric. Straight stitch doesn't, and will break if stretched.

I’m wondering about this too I got a Mertailor with a dorsal but I’m so short, I might have to figure something else out!

Heya mers, I ended up taking my tail to a seamstress in the end, cuz I was too scared to do it my self incase I messed something up. The tailor is very good, and he knows what he's doing. I pick my tail up this Thursday in time for a holiday.

I picked up my tail today and tried it on, and the tailor did an excellent job with taking the waist in. He took a total of 20 centimetres of fabric off and the tail fits skin tight as it should. It was so loose in the waist before. It’s long, but I prefer tails that are high waisted. Mers, definitely take your tail in to an alteration place to get it adjusted to fit you! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200924/51bcacb3b470736cc4be8297a46a11c1.jpg

Awesome. Thanks for sharing! Was it a local tailor? We’re they surprised to see a tail? LOL! Was the price reasonable?
