View Full Version : American is really falling behind in the mermaid race.

i seems like altely all the cute little mermaid series are coming straight out of the phillipines lately the newest of them being
Aryana
2708
2709
2710
but before this there was the series Mutya
2711
2712
2713
and i think we all know about Dyesebela series that actually spans for more then a few years and keeps getting rebooted
2714
2715
and there are like a few more that i just cant remember:doh:
now i'm not raggin on any of these series i'v watch little clips of them and read up on their wikipeidia pages
and they extremly well down and very interesting
the point is that the only mermaid series the US has to it's name is H2O Just Add Water and even that doesn't really belong to us
is america just incapable of producing an epic fantasy drama series
that doesn't revolve around witches and demon hunting brothers:mad:
honestly i think its time we start shelling out some more mermaid media
i mean there are four extremely gifted tail makers in america one of whom is freaking legendary
and we are quite capable of putting mermaid in movies with small cameos so why haven't we made any mermaid tv series dramas:confused:

I like this challenge.
I think the main reason why there isn't one right now is cost. I got the chance to talk to one of the guys from Mythbusters a few weeks ago and he said that it was unlikely any studio like ILM will ever go back to using models and prosthetics in the same vein that it was known for because CGI is now cheaper.
And I think that if a new tv series was to be produced the producers would want to only use the best/most realistic on the market - which is currently CGI... and is still very expensive for a tv series (look at BBC's Primeval, for example).

I'd be willing to be a mermaid in a tv show for a small amount of money just so we could have an epically epic mermaid show. Hell, I'll even make my tail! All they have to do is shoot it! Actually, screw it. I have an underwater camera that takes great pictures. Who wants to make an epically epic mermaid show with me? :D

There's this new fangled thing called youtube now ^^ Any mer can make their own weekly show. A reality style show about what it takes to keep this hobby going and what sort of community of friends you have to go mermaiding with would be very fun to watch.

Yeeeeah, while I do like the stuff people put on youtube, and I'm not dissing people who enjoy making youtube series (my theatre director's have always suggested it as a good beginner's method for working with cameras or just bettering your acting), I'm disappointed that there isn't anything on TV. I mean, I know Disney channel has a reputation of being AWFUL, but I would totally watch a Tv series about Aquamarine and tell haters to hate.

yeah, there's a lot of mermaid web shows but they're all like H20, the three friends who happen into a secrete area and turn into mermaids with the power to control water, boil it, and freeze it. It gets really old that they don't have their own original storylines. I would love to see a mermaid t.v series though. I mean if you buy some tails from the mertailor or mermaid rentals(like charmed) they're probably cheap enough to create something from them. Or even making their own tails from latex like star or raven's first tail.
But, i think America doesn't have a mermaid show because its associated with more of a coming of age teen story than one that everyone can enjoy(which is totally wrong. i mean look at this trailer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uP6lCnbixg
or this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW3UfCEe6lQ
and this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyF5YsMu3ro)
now tell me that an adult mermaid show can't be made.
Prince Calypso
04-29-2012, 11:08 PM
i agree completely. it isn't impossible to make an adult mermaid series or even a young adult based one
Hell Mermaid the tv movie was so epic i wish it had been spun off into series
the same goes for a Aquamarine
did you know after the episode "a witch's tail" of Charmed aired the studio had put a seires called mermaids into works but nothing ever came of it
i demand this series be made and others like it. if all these different vampire shows can be replayed over and over then so can a mermaid show

I honestly thought Pirates of the Caribbean was going to do that. It seemed there was a very short-lived
mermaid craze where Lady Gaga and then Katy Perry did some mermaid themed things but maybe for like
a week at most. Afterwards no one really cared anymore o_O

To be honest I like that we have such a small community. I do get annoyed with the vampire fandom though, especially because Twilight is so horribly done. But I think the mermaid fandom would lose some of its closely-knit, special feeling if it became mainstream. So I don't mind being part of our little minority. ;p But it does suck that there aren't many good mermaid themed shows out there.

I for one would be very interested in watching a YouTube series that centred around mermaids and was made by and starring people old enough to vote or drink in a bar for once. I keep searching around on the site and am quite fed up of hitting the stop button as soon as you see that the person in the video who you thought was in their twenties would actually need a ton of toilet paper to fill their bra. I really wouldn't mind if the plot revolved around ideas as formulaic as H20's need for an implausible situation involving one or more of the mermaids, a locked door and a bucket of water each week.

well, get ready for a shit load of mermaid stuff to spring up, good and bad because i've heard that stephanie Meyer (author of twilight) is working on a mermaid book. and i have noticed and increase in mermaid novels. they just don't get enough publicity to make them a really big thing. Look at the Lost Voices series, it is a great piece of work, but you would have never heard of it unless you went searching for it. and i bet that your library doesn't even stock one volume of it. (unlike twilight which my school library and public library stocked about 4 of each book before the movie was even in production)

I just think that at the moment the whole thing is skewed more towards the cute and for kids end of the mermaid spectrum. It would be nice if for once there was a treatment of mermaids in a mainstream series that was more adult in nature. The Mermaids series seemed to be a step in that direction, but as it never got off the ground I worry that it's seen as proof that such a thing cannot work in the long run.

there's always a fandom. Starwars, star trek, twilight, hunger games, lord of the rings. Stop caring :) Something always comes along and replaces something else, and some will always last a super long time. There's no sense getting worked up about it. If it happens, it happens. we dont wanna be the snooty 'original' fans or something. "i liked it before it was cool" type.

Flame sheild UP.
I liked twilight when it first came out. This being said, I was 12. Those books are written at a middle school reading level, so of course they're not going to be great. Yes, the movies are horrible. Yes, the fandom makes me want to bang my head against the nearest hard surface. And yes, it's stupid that vampires sparkle and if she messes up mermaids I'll be pretty pissed off.
But as Raina said, there will always be idiots in every fandom, and there will always be some big fad that everyone outside of it can't stand. And it kinda sucks when you're in that fandom and you're surrounded by n00bs who make you look bad or who are always raving about how their the biggest fan every and everyone else is stupid when they don't know what they're talking about. (Anyone who likes Axis Powers Hetalia will know my pain.)
So, there may be a sucky book that makes mermaids go so mainstream that we all may end up sounding like mermaiding hipsters who liked it first. Or maybe it will be like The Host and no one will care that S.Meyer wrote another book and they'll all move on to something else. The point is that we can't control what happens, and better or for worse, we're mermaids and we'll keep being mermaids even if millions of thirteen year old girls in crappy tails starting raiding swimming pools across the nation squeeing about whatever Emo hottie is going to be the love interest in this new book. And who knows, maybe the book will actually be GOOD.
...... yeah, even I'm having a hard time believing that last bit.

That sounds about right^^ One of my best friends wanted to see Breaking Dawn when it came out; I went with her. I don't watch much TV, so I had not seen any of the preveiws for it. I had read the books and I enjoyed them. Get to the theater turns out it was only part one. I asked the chick at the desk, "are you sure it's only part one?" I was soo upset, but then I thought, great Jaccob's POV will sshow up more. Nope. What did they make part one---sex and blood. That was it. The movie sucked, and I probaly won't go see part 2.

To be honest, when the books came out I read the first... and went back mid-story to Christine Feehan.
(Also Paranormal Romance, but targeted more to adults who ask questions such as, if Vampires are a seperate species, shouldn't they have their own language? Are their dating/mating rituals different too?... etc. ;D )
I was a huge Carpathians fan at that point so already into vampires, just not sparkly ones.
However, I agree to a point. The S.M. mermaid books may suck to us mermaids, but to the broader pre-teen public who are out-growing H2O it might get them loving mermaids again.
Eventually the Twi-hards grow out of it and either read other ParaRomance literature or dont. However for our community and our tail-makers this might be a boon that brings us new friends and more revenue, because like Raina said
hey we take the fandom further, they cant really BECOME vamps, but we all become mers! :p

Back on the topic of mermaid TV Series, Why not make your own? Film a pilot episode or skit for this months challenge or just for the local Community TV station.
My local one is 44Adelaide, it's only available on the new digital FreeTV system and is often ignored due to lack of a Tv Guide and poor show quality.

i agree with you and Raina. there will always be a fandom and quite honestly i hate those people who are like "well i was a fan before it became mainstream"
cause my response is usually my fist in their face
i also agree that twilight isn't all that bad when your a teenager or tween
the only thing i hated was that Stephanie Mayer did no research on vampire and made up like fifty percent of her crap. i mean having a unique idea is fine but when an entire generation of people now believe that all vampire sparkle and that a werewolf and shape shifter are the same thing it kinda irks me
i spent an entire two weeks have to explain to my little cousins that no real vampire don't sparkle and that no there is not difference beween animal blood and human blood and that yes vampires do have fangs and that yes Edward would get his ass kick if he and Lestat or Dracula or even fucking blade were to get into a fight and no werewolves aren the same thing as shape shifters and yes Jacob is hot as ice
i just don't want Stephanie Mayer to do the same thing with mermaids and ruin that myth as well.

I really do not feel that passionate one way or another about twilight. I liked the books, I liked the movies. No more than I like most things. hey we take the fandom further, they cant really BECOME vamps, but we all become mers! :p i meant to comment on this earliers, but i kept forgetting what i was going to say. :3 but there is actually a vampire community. There're 3(?) different type of vampires, theres the kind that actually drinks blood, the kind that feed off of spiritual energy and the kind that feeds from sexual interaction. One of the most famous vampires is the vampire Don. And the Twilight craze actually created more people who went into the vampire community thinking they were going to be like Edward and the Cullens. But just like being a mermaid, most vampires know when they're meant to be a vampire. And these people who were going into the community because of Twilight were just doing it to be cool and not because they actually felt a connection to being a vampire.

And i'm sure that with a new wave of mermaid interest, there will be people who probably will look down on other mers but only joined it because they think it's cool or to attract attention. (imagine, hit movies and books and you hear someone mention in a conversation about the latest hit movie that he/she is a mermaid/man and then, the convo starts to revolve around them. i have seen it happen with the twilight and trueblood fandom. and to top it all off, people usually have the wrong information and gives that out about the community making us all look like a bunch of mysterious people jumping into holes in masses of water with cloaks and what not on followed by unicorns.) but hey! i still say bring it on! we'll be able to deal with that. :3

Ok forget shows about mermaids, which will be predictable or pre-pubescent anyways... H20 was Australian. Good ol' Channel Ten... and There are a few mermaid comic books, that is: Elf-fin, and maybe Fathom comic. Google them for more info. What I want to see is a movie geared towards adults, or smartly done like Splash was, that features BOTH mermaids and mermen. I am kind of looking forward to the new Mako island, H2O spin off series, it looks more action packed and not just the teen girls get tails... I think American popularity hasn't really caught the mermaid bug yet. I'd love it if that happened, but I may go all hipster mermaid, if things start to get all out of control, like what happened with Twilight and that Vampire craze... yes I will stand my guard in that I am genuinely interested in merfolk, a few decades before they got popular and in the mainstream... and I won't deny it!

Perhaps we need to continue to push the viral "Mermaids Are the New Vampires." campaign. ;)
I'd like to see "Mermaids: The Body Found" developed into a series which features not only "aquatic apes" but more traditional merfolk.

well, good luck with that.
"traditional" merfolk are water faeries- they have magic, are mostly shapeshifters, and most of them are dangerous to humans.
One can imagine some great mythological shows about them, but certainly nothing "scientifically plausible"^^
regarding "mermaids and vampires"...weren't the mermaids in Pirates ot Caribbean vampiric? (I didn't see it, loathed the whole series)
In that case, it's only a matter of time until someone (maybe even Ms Meyer) makes up yet another big heap of pseudo-new-age-myth about it.
But hey!
Most people dissing Twilight don't have a clue that the "real undead scary" vampire that falls to dust in sunlight is also not based on real myths, but was invented by Hollywood and Murnau :P

Say what you will about H2O...I'm nearing 30 and I wouldn't BE here wanting a tail and writing mermaid fiction if it weren't for that show ;) Then again, I'm an eternal 14-year-old tomboy at heart.
We're getting to the point where the web is where niche folks like us can find media about our peculiar interests. Even Netflix is starting to just hand producers a ton of money to make up super creative TV shows however they want. Thank goodness for the multinational Internet. And Amazon, where you can find obscure books that are very well written.

Just another pro H2O shout out...I'm 32 and I basically have H2O on a continuous loop. Anytime I have a free half hour or something I'll put it on. My hubby is quite a bit older than me and loves it too.
Not that that's even what this thread is about but I'm just jumping in there with it. However, I would love to see an American mer-show or a good adult movie (er, geez not an "adult movie" but you know what I mean). With that said, I'm kinda of the opinion that I like our "little" community and don't necessarily need to see it become a "fad"...but if it happens it happens and we will all roll with the wave until only us hardy-shelled creatures are left standing.

I agree Wavy, H2O is seemingly always playing at my house. :P My mom can't stand how many times she's heard certain lines or the theme music. xD

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to make this thread about yea or nay H2O. And I'm super biased. I think people naturally rebel against the kiddiness of kids shows when they get much past 15 because they want to prove they're sophisticated serious adults. And then, when they get much past 24 or 25, they long for the innocence of childhood again. Thus you get die hard teenaged 30 year olds like us who watch cartoons and become H2O maniacs XD
As far as what this thread is actually about, I think we're in promising times. Like I mentioned, Internet hubs like Netflix are producing their own shows, and TV producers are coming out and saying that they were just given gobs of money and told to go wild. If Stephanie Meyer, hack that she is, puts mermaids on the radar, and mermaids like Hannah keep putting themselves out there, we will see more creative mermaid stuff.
I know there are authors and artists here too. This is in our hands, people. Make us proud.

I just finished reading Waking Storms! It was amazing! and It's leaning more and more towards an adult/teen novel with darker mermaids. I just love it!
Also, apparently, Animal planet is making a sequel to Mermaids:The Body Found. I think it's called Mermaids: The New Evidence. I just started a thread about it yesterday :)

Me and MermaidLexi are going to make one after our tails are done. We should make one together!:)
