Recently I have been searching for a giant clam shell, one that I can sit in to appear at events etc. But have had no luck so far keeping in mind it's a prop piece that is a bit out of the ordinary. I wondered if anyone knew where it might be possible to find one or knew of one for sale anywhere? And how expensive it would be? I have thought about making my own as well but I've heard they can be quite difficult to make and I wouldn't really know where to start. Appreciate any suggestions!:)

Do you have a decent way to transport it?
I found these:

This one is inflatable!

This one is a chair, and it's pretty cool, but you might have to email the manufacturers to see if they still make it or not.

Linden had hers specially made by a friend I know, I think Raven got hers as the result of some other company shutting down or selling them off? Im not 100%
I think it would be helpful to keep an eye on classifieds in the props and theatre end of things for these things to pop up already made. I have no idea how you'd go about making one... >.>

I can't seem to find the picture, but I did see one where someone made the shape out of wood, covered it in I think fleece, and covered that in fiberglass. It looked nice, and he did it himself. With the skills in this community, I'm sure someone could replicate it.

@Sirena: I looked at them yesterday. Thanks of the link. But unfortunately for the moment that is a little bit out of my price range, they look really cool though. I think going anywhere for a half decent clam shell big enough to sit in I’m going to have to start saving up.

I have a couple of friends who use 'giant clam shell' props for various stage acts and they use kids paddling pools - this is the kind of thing I mean (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-BLUE-SHELL-SAND-PIT-OR-CAN-BE-USED-AS-PADDLING-POOL-ONLY-HALF-THE-SHELL-/121012082608?pt=UK_Toys_Games_Outdoor_Toys_ET&hash=item1c2ce1d7b0). You could probably get bigger if you looked for them at a toy store or somewhere like that?

It looks pretty naff as it is but I think the girls I know who use them sand them down or something to remove the shine off the plastic then they spray with pearl effect spray paint (it takes a couple of coats) and spray paint - add drapes of soft pink fabric to the inside and you're good to go :)

You can probably use this pool for a mould too. And useable plaster or something light weight and sand down that harsh corner where the side meets the bottom to make it round

Mermaid Isabel(:
01-12-2014, 04:59 PM
That's a good idea :) I'm not sure how hard it would be to transport that to gigs. Maybe use fiberglass and put foam on the bottom one and a pillow as well so I can sit in it?

Seatan
01-12-2014, 05:02 PM
I do know that the clam shell at the Scarboroough Renaissance Faire that you see in Finfolk pictures is apparently VERY uncomfortable to sit on, especially in the HOT sun (so says one of the mermaids from the lagoon) so pillows are definitely a grand idea!

Echidna
01-13-2014, 09:26 AM
I've looked around.
The kid sand-/waterclam is apparently flimsy, very small (not even a 7 yr old could sit in it) and doesn't look realistic in the slightest.
The one Finfolk had, however...man, that's awesome!
I wonder where they got it?!

Couldn't find anything similar, so I bought a very life-like, inflatable green snake as pool- or other prop.
Was really cheap too, guess snakes aren't poular

I haven't seen the clam shell from finfolk I'll have to look it up! I know the kid pools I have are pretty big I've already sat in it and it is indeed very flimsy that's why I'm just using them as molds and then I can add texture and make it more realistic hopefully.

what if you shaped one out styrofoam then covered it in layers of plaster stripes for a mold, then cut it around the sides to pull the foam form out... then take the plaster shell mold seal the sides and leave one open hole to pour liquid resin. you could make 2 halves drill hinges and paint them.

PearlieMae
04-04-2014, 03:55 PM
Even with rotocasting to make it hollow, you're still looking at hundreds of dollars in resin, and the weight would be unmanageable.

I think your best bet is to carve one out of dense styrofoam (like the thick, pink house insulation), notch the two halves so they fit together in the open position. Paint it with a primer base coat and decorate with acrylics. if you make the bottom half thick, it should be sturdy enough to support you.

MerEmma
04-04-2014, 04:32 PM
Some sort of foam (perhaps an injection mold of some sort? granted that's defs on a larger scale) would HAVE to be the way to go about this. That or plastic, and plastic would be on a large scale like an injection mold.

Kelphinea_Kelp
04-04-2014, 05:05 PM
I wonder if there is a way to maybe make a clam shape of of some soft sponge like material and then coat it with something to make it hard?

MerEmma
04-04-2014, 05:43 PM
Plasti Dip is pricey but it hardens things. Sponge material? Not sure that would be good to use.

Aziara
04-04-2014, 06:24 PM
Plasti Dip isn't really hard, more like medium-stiff rubber. I used the spray one, however, not the dip. No idea whether the dip would end up with a harder end product.

Kelphinea_Kelp
04-04-2014, 06:28 PM
well if i took something like bed foam and sew it and cut it into large clam like pillow shapes i could insert a large ball or pillow the size of my body to hold the shape inside then sew it closed. then coat the shell in layers of a hard coating material so the clam holds its shape around the ball or pillow, then you could seam rip or cut the clam open so you have your separate halves, and now because the outside has been stretched and bent to fit over a round body like shape then outside of the shell will keep its form... so now you just coat the inside halves in layers.

MerEmma
04-04-2014, 06:53 PM
Perhaps it's not as hard as I feel like it is haha. I used it on a paper mache raptor head (that was a failed attempt number two, but that's irrelevant) and it FELT like it made it pretty hard. Not like rock hard or anything, but it definitely made it stiffer.

"My giant clam won't open; I think it's trying to digest me." - Viewer commenting on the "A New Day Is Dawning" sequence of Kingdom Hearts II (it's sort of like the "Daughters of Triton" sequence)

If I had unlimited time and/or budget, I would try to make one like one of the real-world giant clams' shells. Those are just large enough for an adult to sit inside, if one curls up. Kelphinea's idea is thus an intriguing one if the interior opening is roughly shaped for a mermaid's body in a way that the clam shell could be opened by a mertender to reveal her; it would give the impression of having been chosen/shaped as her little lair! :pearl:

It wouldn't be that hard to make a hard clamshell, but the thing would be awfully cumbersome to transport. The air mattress is a perfect solution, but there must be a less expensive way to get one. I wonder how much it would cost to have one custom made.

or...

How about a cartop clamshell carrier, sawed into a shell shape and painted?

I too am looking for a giant clam shell to be used as a backdrop for dry photo ops. I found the most AMAZING option, but it's only available in New Zealand, and the cost of shipping is over $1000 (USA) while it only cost $20. :-(

You can see what I had my hopes set on here: http://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/red/catalog/product/Clamshell-Blue?SKU=620675

Can anyone help me? I am NOT crafty and do NOT desire to make mine out of cardboard nor Styrofoam myself. I want to buy it, paint it, decorate it, and haul it all over taking photos. :-) In my Ford Tarus, so size matters.

Thanks so much everyone! That one on amazon is about half the size of what I need. I want to be able to fit 2 adults or 1 adult and 2 children in it comfortably. My brother in law is handy with tools and my sister is an artist, so we're going to see what kind of mess we can make in the garage. If it works out, he'd be happy to make more and sell them.

Haha! I was TOTALLY going to buy one of those, and was debating, until I realized most of my swimming gigs are in small pools and these would be a safety issue with swimmers getting trapped underneath. Depending on cost of supplies and how my wood shell turns out, this may be my back up plan. I especially like the white sofa. Maybe I could paint it. I'm too pale to pose in front of anything all white and still be seen!

I was thinking that, but a fabric skin over that much surface area would catch major wind whenever the breeze blows XD Wouldn't want it to blow over when it's outdoors, although I think that design would be cool for indoor displays.

What would everyone's roundabout budget be for buying a clamshell "throne" set up? I've been working on a few designs and making a couple small-scale models, but it would be easier to pick building materials if I knew the price range everyone would like to see. Would something like 200$ be too much, assuming it's about a 5'6" tall waterproof shell, approx. 6' wide, and collapses down to something that can be put inside a car back seat?

LauraLWatson

That's a bit bigger than I would need, but the price is about right. I mean, cheaper is always better, but I want it to last and look good when photographed. Collapsible giant clam shell we can sit in sounds like the holy grail, but if there is any group of people on the planet who could make it work, it'd be a theater person!

Aquarianne
07-08-2014, 11:18 AM
I dont know about something that could fit through a doorway...do you mean a standard inside door frame? It would have to be super narrow. What kind of wagon...like a radio flyer style wagon? I suppose you could build the shell onto it sideways, but then you wouldnt be facing the people asyou were wheeled in. Plus it would have to be custom made and built around the wagon.

Although, I was wondering about creating a cool entrance for parties myself! What are the dimensions of your wagon?

Aziara
07-08-2014, 11:30 AM
I don't actually have a wagon yet, unfortunately. It was just an idea I've been throwing around in my head. Seems like it would be great way to make a first impression! Though to fit through a doorway, I get that it would have to be narrow (I'm thinking if I get dressed inside and get wheeled out to the pool, at least one doorway would be involved). Perhaps narrow and tall? More like an angel wing shell than a scallop or clam? http://oceanica.cofc.edu/shellguide/shells/shellphotos/angelwing1.jpg

I'm thinking a 5'6" tall shell would be *too* big... unless you mean that is the full length of both pieces when open? Considering we'll be sitting in the shell I'm thinking a height of one half of the shell wouldn't have to be bigger than 3-4 feet tall.

That's not a bad idea! Actually, now that I think on it...if the person pulling your wagon is in front of you and pulling when you come in the door, the front-facing shell effect would be ruined anyway, because they'd be blocking the kids' view of you as they pull in front. it actually would be better to do the shell longways on the wagon, then have the handler pull the wagon in and take a sharp left or right, so the wagon naturally positions itself facing the audience. Plus there are some modern radio flyer wagons that already have slots on the side for canopy supports, that a stand-up shell design could fit right onto! paint the rest of the wagon white to match the upright shell, hang some seaweed around and over the edges...that would look pretty cool! :D

Blaze: oh, well if you only wanted it about 4 feet tall opened, that would be MUCH easier and cheaper to make! I was going off the dimensions of a previously posted picture, the one Finfolk made :) But for a 4 foot tall back shell, say with a matching bottom "shell" that's actually a very big waterproof cushion shaped just like the other half of the shell, which would be easier and more comfy to sit on and involve fewer banged shins for kids trying to lean in for a photo...that would be WAY more economical! XD

I started a shell chair. A complete giant clam shell is too hard to move around, difficult to take photos with kids, and too low to the ground for me. It needs to be easier to take photos with kids and something I can fit in the car if I can't use the old truck.
This was the basic idea for the base:
22704
THIS is what it looks like right now in the shop. It's pretty darn huge for the back of a chair, but needs to look less like a fan. The faintly drawn head is how big it is compared to me sitting in front of it.
22705
22706
This is what I will do to fix it. Make it smaller and add more lines. I have the extra lines in already just need to now wait till sunset and use the dirt to trace where to cut. Once the base is finished, I will work on what details I want on this chair. maybe some large shells on the side for arm rests or glittering waves pouring over the sides. Maybe straight up GLITTER! lol

Haha. Well... it is concrete, which is okay, but the edges are a bit rough (the scalloped lip bit) so we have to be careful about our fluke rubbing on it.
It stays in that location year round.

The back is at a bad angle, so you can't really sit up straight.

It has water in it, which is kinda dumb, but the big thing is keeping the drain from clogging when kids inevitably toss rocks in it. And the water gets gross looking fast.

It could also benefit from being a bit deeper (front to back, not up and down) if it were, it would be more comfortable to sit it. One could have their legs straight with a draped fluke instead of the kind of awkward angle now. It works for me (5'5") but some of the taller girls had issues in the past.

We kinda stand on the "meat" of the oyster to put our tails on, because we have to get in costume in the place we perform. So that could be a touch flatter. Sometimes I stand with my heels in trench-y bit.

(Also, I think I recall it being said that FinFolk had a part in the design/construction. This is not accurate. It was created by the grounds crew at Scarby.)

If I missed anything, let me know!

It is a bit on the smaller size but it seems big enough to be able to sit on (if you close up the hole for the dancers to sit in) I wish they had more photos of it, because if they had photos of the back and the hinges and inside I'm sure I would be able to figure it out.

And I never thought of making it straight out of Styrofoam, I always thought of using expanding foam.

I loved reading this thread, it gave me ideas I wanted to share. Recently I fixed up a beach tent for my puppy and really this is an extension of that experience. Basically it's a half shell beach awning/shade canopy.

41518

The basic idea is a solid wooden base that's been trilled in a semi-circle half moon shape. From there you'd need to drill holes of appropriate sizes at regular intervals for carbon fiber rods to insert into. I also thought it'd be clever and less weight to have the base rest on an angled hollow box that could be filled with nearby beach sand or rocks to act as a counterweight against wind and the weight of the awning.

The spines of the awning I've created for this mockup extend about 10' out and gradually get shorter as they near the outer holes of the half moon piece created to hold the shape. If you order custom tent poles these spines would be collapsable making for easier and cheaper transport too and from locations. Now you could go a step further and sew yourself the half moon shape using the same material you choose for the awning (nylon most likely) sewing pockets instead of drilling holes but you'd have to bury this part in the sand or rest something on top of it to prevent wind from catching it. I'll mockup a pattern for that later.

The next step once you've got your rods and base or pocket pattern you'll want to create dimension and arches.

41519

The best way to do this would be to find flexible bamboo, metal or plastic rods which you will then be putting into the end pockets of your awning and joining together with either presewn pockets at the terminus of each spine, or they could plug into 3D printed plastic or metal clips that will hold them at specific intervals and cause them to bow upwards at the end of your awning. You may need an inner layer of clips and flexible spines further down the interior of your shell for a more consistent ribbed appearance but that should not be too hard to include should you desire a really impactful scallop. Bamboo would be my choice item to use in this situation as it's extremely flexible and easily replaced should it break or get lost.

The last steps would be to decide on the overall shape and size of your awning. Depending on the amount of material you plan to use ( whole pockets for each spine or just ribbons tie it down, pockets for the arches, how much fabric between arches etc) will determine the overall look of your beach shell. Personally I'd probably choose 60" white nylon which sells for 9.95 a meter here in Canada, getting around 6 meters so that I could have a 120" wide shell (stitched together) at a total length of 10" at its longest point.

For added detail you could airbrush the inside of your material pink or iridescent for a mother of pearl look on the interior, lightly dry brush the exterior with paintable silicon and then paint it with a flexible acrylic for a more weathered realistic shell look.

Last post promise. I kind of went a little idea crazy and thought up a Spiral shade or changing room beach tent too.
41532

The basic idea for this is a round tent supported by one bamboo rod threaded through nylon pockets at the base of the Spiral crown and at the top of the tent base. This rod is jointed to form a complete circle via a soldered metal joint. The base is supported by collapsable carbon fiber rodding that is longer than the tent so that when it is threaded through three sewn nylon pockets the rods bow outwards rounding the sides.

The spiral crown has Spring Steel wiring threaded up through the shape, spring steel you may know is the same steel used in collapsible laundry hampers among other things. The spring steel helps to reinforce the stitching of the spiral which doesn't quite match the pattern mockup above as it was created prior to my first attempts using paper ( that design creates individual doughnuts that mimic the look but don't match the spiral shape at all). Each layer is then given approximately 4 or more nylon pocket pairs throughout so that bamboo rods can be cut and placed in the finished work to bow outwards and complete the rounded walled shape. The crown of the spiral crown is supported by two bamboo rods threaded through four nylon pockets that criss cross each other. The pattern for the crown, four individual triangles remains the same.

Without testing it I can anticipate that the spiral crown may need to be supported by a tripod of three measured rods (carbon fiber or bamboo) that insert into nylon pockets stitched into the base of the crown and top of the tent portion and pockets sewn below the final criss crossing crown portion level.

EDIT: you may not even need the spring steel threading if you use the tripod support method for the crown. If I come up with an actual sewing pattern I'll upload it here to share. Likewise for the scallop tent. :)

Awe, I like the inflatable one more than mine now and it's way more portable. The only thing I'd maybe do if I had one is try and sew a bunch of different slip covers for it to jazz it up whenever I felt, but it's just cozy as is.

Not much thought Keiris, just an hour or two whilst tanning today and on the bus ride from work. I do window displays for work and started doing some theatre and film props lately. Used to work on a haunted house building rooms and props too so some light experience but nothing qualified really. I'd build small mockups before attempting anything big, I find the little wooden sticks you put in scented oil jars have enough bend to them and they measure about 12" you could get a good tent mockup in if I got some and cut them to size. Plug the design into my embroidery machine and let it chug away at some nylon, sculpy or dremel to make the connecting base and I'd probably have a mockup of the scallop in a day or so.

Impressive! And to think, I just thought you were a pretty face. Actually, it sounds very cool.

Ah but isn't a pretty face part of the bait? :P Granted I think I sing like a choking pelican so you know I'm no siren. This does remind me I need to update my profile to something more recent, that photo is two years old now.

I would never use a shade tent myself come to think of it, I'd just open source the pattern for people on here to use if they wished.

hahahaha a choking pelican???!!! And yes, you must be right. A pretty face IS part of the bait and suits you. It's a handsome picture.

As far as the clam shell, it's a great idea for something really dramatic and large for a prop.

Anyone put their inflatable shells on a bench or something to raise it off the ground? I noticed on my gig on the 4th that disabled people with mobility aids have problems getting onto the shells on the ground and before i buy a shell i want to make sure it can handle being say on something else, or if i should make a small bench like these instead for ease of access (i would like to buy the inflatable though as it would take up less room when deflated and is easier to transport)
