So me and a couple of mer friends have the possibility of a gig if we can sing mermaidy songs. Though the people that I have been talking to said no Little Mermaid so I'm at a bit of a loss here. I need 5-6 songs and I already have Jolly Sailor Bold :D
Though I need something that could be done in rounds or harmonizing parts easily.
P.S. all of us are in choir and there are two altos and one soprano. I am an alto but can sing higher if need be

ROCK LOBSTER!!!! oh hell yes lol
seriously, though.... I've often had the same dilemma- what on earth does a mermaid sing about? Drowning people? lol... I'll do a bit of research and hit ya back.

There's a close connection between sailors and Mers. Any good nautical song or sea shanty will do. Many of them mention mermaids.

Check out the artist Tennis, 99.9% of her songs are about boats and the ocean, there's probably something there. Also! Stephin Merritt did a whole album called My Life as a Fairytale, and each song has to do with a hans christen anderson, and one of them is about a mermaid. it's pretty good, here are the lyrics:

the little maiden of the sea
was not at all like you and me
where we have legs she was a fish
and she could only say:
“I wish…
I wish I were not incomplete
I wish I had some dainty feet,”
you see, one day she’d met a prince
and she’d been pining ever since
(the little maiden of the sea)
she’d gain her own immortal soul
if she became the prince’s wife
she autovivisected
whole, she walked! each step was like a knife
a knife into her dainty feet
and she could neither speak nor sing
but surely, now she was complete
her prince would think of marrying
the little maiden of the sea
he married someone else, of course
and, saying nothing, she went home
then something turned, by mystic force
the little maiden into foam

What about other Pirates of the Carribbean Songs? Like the one they sang at the hanging.

Try some of the songs at http://www.contemplator.com. I like Fish of the Sea and the Golden Vanity. Married to a Mermaid is also a good one! :) If you don't want to stay with sea songs, there are also plenty of very pretty traditional tunes on the site.

I know there are a few english folk songs that are about mermaids if you are interested in those type of tunes. Sorry I don't know the titles off the top of my head but I'll find out and write back. Hope you find some song you like!

Songs like this and My Jolly Sailor Bold are perfect. I talked to the board (where I'll be doing this gig) and they said the creepier/mystical the better. They want your classic mermaid.

(for all the Doctor Who fans [yay whovians!] I found this that I think you might like)

this thread makes me want to create a group 'songbook' and 'cook book' that we can all add to so if anyone needs something like this they can have a book to select from. also, i really like books... :$

Majandra Delfino (of Roswell and State of Georgia fame) has a song called Siren that I enjoyed and sounds very... sirenic.

Call of the Siren is exactly the kind of thing I'd do (unless the gig is a kiddie birthday or something).

I imagine a real mermaid/siren/... would not sing in words, or if they did, it would be a strange, eerie language no one has ever heard.
(I have some chilling chinese and romanian folk songs at my disposal which usually work very well in that department :D )
