Hello merfolk!
I'm finally stepping into this world after spending years keeping myself away. I've loved mermaids since I was a child and first saw The Little Mermaid. That was made more intense when I saw the Show Reel of Hannah Mermaid swimming with whales at 14. That video changed me. I wanted to make a tail immediately, and made a monofin out of bifins that worked remarkably well by zip-tying them through open sides. A friend helped me a sew up a fabric tail out of gold dance fabric, but I was always too ashamed of my interest to put it on but one time. I tried again a few years later, but was made fun of by a stepfather figure, and thus never took to it again.
...until a few years later when I saw H20: Just Add Water at 16, and could not believe the way the tails moved. The one thing I always lamented about the tails we saw everywhere was the inability to hide the heels of the merfolk swimming. These ones did so, and stunningly. I thought that was the pinnacle of tail designs because it made sense to me - merfolk would have thick muscular tails, right?
Well, within the last two years I came across the extended monofin concept. Mermaid Aquata, SikiRedFins, and CrowCawFX have all crafted absolutely stunning tails that move beyond the feet and create an illusion of something far more natural than the fabric tails I once put together. Of these, though, Mermaid Aquata's designs had me gagged. Especially her blue Siren tail. I have watched her videos so many times, and its entirely because of the incredible way her tails move in the water. SikiRed and CrowCaw really do n excellent job of creating tails that are hyper-realistic, but I've found that both of these creators have aspects of their designs I'm not super into, such as a flat extension of the tail, or a tail that doesn't really propel you through the water. Their creations are absolutely brilliant, and are certainly inspiring, but Mermaid Aquata's tail designs are the ones that just tickled my brain exactly the right way.
Now, after a recent stint with COVID, I've realized that there is not reason for me not to pursue this passion, or stop myself from experiencing the joy and bliss that I feel when I dive beneath the water. The world stops hurting. The anxiety stops screaming. The depression stops feeling so heavy. This life isn't meant to be languished and lamented over because we didn't do what brings us joy, or were too afraid of what others would think to enjoy ourselves. So here I am, ready to explore the depths of my mersona and passion. I'm ready to feel like I have something to look forward to again. And I'm ready to embrace the mersona that was locked away to keep me safe.
Hello MerNetwork. I am Merling Nereus born of the Eastern Sea (Atlantic by human words), now calling the Western Sea (Pacific) home, and I cannot wait to experience the world of the Merfolk in full. I am 29 years old, a practicing witch, a musician, a songwriter, and a plant-keeper, and I am thrilled to be here.
I'll be starting a new tail-making project soon that you can follow along with if you like. Also, if anyone can advise me on how to get photos in posts that would be great :sweat drop: I'd like to show what I'm working on in my tail-making thread as well as chatting about it.
