what's it about?
Publisher's Summary
Secrets of the sea have never been sexier than this. Ever since the death of her parents, Miranda has lived on Whym Island, taking comfort in the local folklore, which claims a mysterious sea witch controls the fate of all on the island and in its surrounding waters. Sometimes it’s just easier to believe things are out of your control.
But then a terrible boating accident takes the lives of several of her friends, and Miranda is rescued by a mysterious boy who haunts her dreams. Consumed by guilt from the accident, she finds refuge in late-night swims—and meets Christian, a boy who seems eerily familiar, but who is full of mystery: He won’t tell her where he is from, or why they can only meet at the beach. But Miranda falls for him anyway…and discovers that Christian’s secrets, though meant to protect her, may bring her nothing but harm.
Seductive and compelling, Wrecked brings a contemporary, paranormal twist to a classic enchanting tale.

what it's about:
Fierce, seductive mermaid Syrenka falls in love with Ezra, a young naturalist. When she abandons her life underwater for a chance at happiness on land, she is unaware that this decision comes with horrific and deadly consequences. Almost one hundred forty years later, seventeen-year-old Hester meets a mysterious stranger named Ezra and feels overwhelmingly, inexplicably drawn to him. For generations, love has resulted in death for the women in her family. Is it an undiagnosed genetic defect . . . or a curse? With Ezra’s help, Hester investigates her family’s strange, sad history. The answers she seeks are waiting in the graveyard, the crypt, and at the bottom of the ocean—but powerful forces will do anything to keep her from uncovering her connection to Syrenka and to the tragedy of so long ago.

what it's about:
After parting ways with her troubled mermaid tribe, Luce just wants to live peacefully

wants Luce dead. Dorian, the boy Luce broke mermaid law to save, is determined to
make her pay for her part in the murder of his family. And while the mermaids cling to
the idea that humans never suspect their existence, there are suddenly ominous signs
to the contrary.

hatred they know they should feel for each other. Can Luce fulfill her rightful role as
queen of the mermaids without sacrificing her forbidden romance with Dorian?

what it's about:
Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistable good looks and charm on ususpecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.

Mermaids have also started to show up in romance and erotic romance novels more frequently as well... though the quality of such results is... mixed.

On the other hand, for a book similar to the famous and colorful children's series of -Ology books, one might consider Ari Berk's The Secret History of Mermaids and Creatures of the Deep. It is part of a series (Thus far they also have secret histories of Giants and Hobgoblins, and there are suggestions that secret histories of dwarves and fairies might be in the works).

I was sort of hoping someone would adapt "Mermaids: A Body Found" into novel form. Conspiracy theories, government cover-ups, and a bit of ocean awareness.

eventually, someone probably will do it. I'm hopeing that someone makes a novel on the community. I've read countless books on the vampire and fae community. Now all we need is one on the mermaid community.

I'd like to see Syfy get ahold of it and make it a series... a Man From Atlantis for today's crowd - Aquaticus.

Imagine a mammalian mermaid/merman rescued/abducted from a government facility, add some paranormal with a hydrokinetic, and possibly a strange research facility/seastead in uncharted waters. Throw in that strange "sunken UFO" they recently discovered, and possibly some feejee mermaids and jenny hanivers.

As the Man From Atlantis, Mark Harris just walked about. No worries. But a mammalian mermaid might need a special designed wheelchair for mobility and assistive technology for communication.

So Man From Atlantis + Surface + Seaquest DSV.... perfect.

As for the mermaid community.... can we make it merfolk, please? :) I am 46 and the father of seven and only recently mer-minded, but I am bringing my 8-year old daughter along for the ride!

Forgive my fins by Tera Lynn Childs
What it's about:Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but for Lily Sanderson, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.
Lily has a secret, and it’s not her huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid—she’s a Thalassinian princess. When she discovered three years ago that her mother was actually a human, Lily finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been going to Seaview High ever since. Living on land has its problems—like her obnoxious biker-boy neighbor, Quince Fletcher—but it has that one major perk: Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type—when they bond, it’s for life.
When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily ever after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.

Sea Change By Aimee Friedman
What it's About:
Bestselling author Aimee Friedman is back, with her signature combination of warmth and humor. And with this book, she adds a touch of fantasy. . .

Sixteen-year-old Miranda Merchant is great at science. . .and not so great with boys. After major drama with her boyfriend and (now ex) best friend, she's happy to spend the summer on small, mysterious Selkie Island, helping her mother sort out her late grandmother's estate.

There, Miranda finds new friends and an island with a mysterious, mystical history, presenting her with facts her logical, scientific mind can't make sense of. She also meets Leo, who challenges everything she thought she knew about boys, friendship. . .and reality.

Tempest rising by Tracy Deebs
Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water's temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her-and that the entire ocean's future hangs in the balance.

I just found a new one yesterday called Florence by Ciye Cho.
He's an Australian author.

The book is about a 17 year old girl named Florence who gets kidnapped and taken to an Underwater Kingdom where she is intended to be the familiar of one of the mer-princes. But off course things changes, the plot thickens, a larger conflict comes by taking the form of sea monsters and a darkness.

It looks really good and from the "sample" they have made available, it has really caught my attention. It only came out 3 days ago and is already out of stock on amazon. And all the reviews are 4 stars or higher. Here's the video trailer.

Something cool that I like about the mers in this universe is that they are completely colored from head to... tailfin. That's something I haven't really seen any real mers try yet.

Thank you so much for the list! I plan on reading all of them.
I've already started Waking Storms. I love the Lost Voices trilogy. :)

Lost Voices is a really excellent book. It uses fantasy to speak about real issues the lost and abandoned of society feel, and there's lots of the mermaids being mermaids. Enjoying simple things like hunting, swimming, fishing, community. That simple life is what's most attractive to me about being a mer, so I love reading about it. Sirena is also great for this reason, and I highly recommend it!

I think a lot of abused and lonely can identify with mermaids.

I don't know if this is the place for it, but I keep a tumblr where I write little short stories about mer (http://makemeamerm.tumblr.com/), or people becoming mer, usually inspired by photos I see online. They're short but maybe I'll develop some into bigger stories. I have a really short attention span for reading and writing :(

Sorry if this is the wrong place for it, I couldn't find a thread for other mermaid stories, and didn't feel like my work had enough substance to start one… but I wanted to share it anyway. Writing it is kind of a release for me. *shrinks away*

09-13-2012, 03:51 PM

I also like Lost Voices.
So far as I know, there is no set place to post about writing, so post away!
Long or short, just keep writing.

I just read your Tumblr stuff. You have a very good command of imagery. Keep it up!

Of all these books, are any characters above 18? Are any of these for more mature readers? Are there even any out there!
I'm looking for a good book to review for my English Comp college class, but I really don't want to choose one that features a teenager in a teenager plot. I have no qualms reading them on my own time (and I do plan on reading some, as I need to get back into reading), but for this class I want something mature but in a subject I enjoy. :)

here's one i've read for mature readers (as you can probably tell by the cover, since most novels like it have the same cover, it is an erotic novel) technically he isn't a merman, but a nymph but mermaids do show up and there's a war with dragons , vampires, and the nymphs!
this is a book in the fred the mermaid series. I haven't read it but i believe that the characters are over 18.

i've also seen this around at walmart and what not, never read it but from what i can remember from the back of the book, it is for mature readers.

On the night of her twenty-fifth birthday, alone in her apartment, Air Force Sergeant Christine Canady wished for one thing: a little magic in her life. After drinking way too much champagne, she performed, of all crazy things, a goddess-summoning ritual, hoping that it would somehow make her life a little less ordinary...but she never believed the spell would actually work.

During a time of great upheaval, the citizens of Venice make a pact that will change the world. The landsmen of the city broker a treaty with a water-dwelling tribe of deepsmen, cementing the alliance through marriage. The mingling of the two races produces a fresh, peerless strain of royal blood. To protect their shores, other nations make their own partnerships with this new breed–and then, jealous of their power, ban any further unions between the two peoples. Dalliance with a deepswoman becomes punishable by death. Any “bastard” child must be destroyed.

This is an Earth where the legends of the deep are true–where the people of the ocean are as real and as dangerous as the people of the land. This is the world of intrigue and betrayal that Kit Whitfield brings to life in an unforgettable alternate history: the tale of Anne, the youngest princess of a faltering England, struggling to survive in a troubled court, and Henry, a bastard abandoned on the shore to face his bewildering destiny, finding himself a pawn in a game he does not understand.
Yet even a pawn may checkmate a king

Oh thanks SO much! I just have to decide between Goddess of the Sea and Tangled Tides - both sound very good. The military-gal-turned-goddess sounds hilarious and awesome.

Not technically a mermaid, but a siren.

Fall under the spell of Wake—the first book in an achingly beautiful new series by celebrated author Amanda Hocking—and lose yourself to the Watersong.

Gorgeous. Fearless. Dangerous. They're the kind of girls you envy; the kind of girls you want to hate. Strangers in town for the summer, Penn, Lexi and Thea have caught everyone's attention—but it’s Gemma who’s attracted theirs. She’s the one they’ve chosen to be part of their group.

Gemma seems to have it all—she’s carefree, pretty, and falling in love with Alex, the boy next door. He’s always been just a friend, but this summer they’ve taken their relationship to the next level, and now there’s no going back. Then one night, Gemma’s ordinary life changes forever. She’s taking a late night swim under the stars when she finds Penn, Lexi and Thea partying on the cove. They invite her to join them, and the next morning she wakes up on the beach feeling groggy and sick, knowing something is different.

Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price. And as she uncovers the truth, she’s is forced to choose between staying with those she loves—or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.

Celia Reynolds is the youngest in a set of triplets and the one with the least valuable power. Anne can see the future, and Jane can see the present, but all Celia can see is the past. And the past seems so insignificant -- until Celia meets Lo.

Lo doesn't know who she is. Or who she was. Once a human, she is now almost entirely a creature of the sea -- a nymph, an ocean girl, a mermaid -- all terms too pretty for the soulless monster she knows she's becoming. Lo clings to shreds of her former self, fighting to remember her past, even as she's tempted to embrace her dark immortality.

When a handsome boy named Jude falls off a pier and into the ocean, Celia and Lo work together to rescue him from the waves. The two form a friendship, but soon they find themselves competing for Jude's affection. Lo wants more than that, though. According to the ocean girls, there's only one way for Lo to earn back her humanity. She must persuade a mortal to love her . . . and steal his soul.

The fate of an entire people rests on my shoulders. I am heir to a dying throne, daughter of a dead city. I have made hard choices to get this far...

Mermaids have never been scarier …

The Feed is upon me and my destiny is laid out before me like a map. There are no detours, no hidden whirlpools that descend into the unknown. Everything I do must be carefully planned or else my choices could come crashing down around me. To change the hearts of my people, I must find the courage to surpass their expectations, to defy tradition and forge my own destiny.

This is it, my last chance at redemption

The Huntswomen, sirens of the sea, have one real purpose in life: on their sixteenth birthdays, they must travel ashore and find a human male, mate with him, and consume his flesh. Only then can they return to the sea and become the last bastion against the violet ocean, warriors for their weaker brethren, the fishtailed merighean.

Natalie is the heir to the throne of the last merighean city still standing, but there's something about the Feed that doesn't sit right with her. When she meets Seth, the man with the strange tattoos, she knows that she must forge her own destiny, even if it means breaking the rules and risking her mother's wrath. Because sometimes, to choose your own path, you must make hard choices.

In an underwater world that is as beautiful as it is ruthless, the mertribes are not about to make peace with each other. Selinne is a mermaid who is certain she can take care of herself. But when she is captured by the bloodthirsty Litiants, she finds unlikely help from Gabriel, a warrior who appears as indifferent as he is handsome. As Selinne struggles to make sense of the good and evil around her, she discovers that there is no escaping love or her place in the raging war of the sea.

Haley wanders the beach one night and finds a string of pearls that turns her into a mermaid. She disappears for an entire year, and when she returns she finds her former life in shambles and her parents demanding answers she can't give.

Bill, her swim team mate, and something-more-than-a-friend wannabe is just happy that she came back, and wishes she would let him help her. But Haley can't shake her longing to return to the sea. Bill is going to have to follow her to the ends of the earth in order to prove his love to her, although he'll be lucky just to get her attention.

I've read Goddess of the Sea. I'm not a huge fan of romance novels, but this one was okay. I bought it for the mermaid aspect and that was definitely fulfilled.

I love romance novels, so if a non-romance novel reader thinks its ok, it must be worth reading. :D Thanks Lorelei!

Can I put my book in here-even though it's technically 2013?
Definitely for readers 15 + though....18 if their parents are around! Lol. It's not erotic fiction by any means, but it does have some scenes I wouldn't want my teenager reading.

It's instalment one of a trilogy. The whole thing is written and ready to go, but I'm being dramatic about it :)

Mermaids have three purposes in life: To protect their environment from the humans, to cultivate their bloodlines, and to keep the knowledge of their species a secret-at any cost.
For a thousand years they have depended on the Court family to keep their species thriving, and Ivyanne is the next in line for the throne- a direct link to their creator, and their princess.
Ivyanne is the embodiment of the mermaid fantasy-beautiful, kind and chaste. But she has a secret, and when she returns to the mainland to live and work as a human, she finds herself facing him again-the only man she has ever loved. A human, and forbidden.
Ivyanne has been running from the Siren within her for decades, ignoring all of the urges that might jeopardize her arranged marriage to an eligible son of The Marked Ones-urges that the other mers within her kingdom embrace. It was easy to do in the sea, under her parent's watchful gazes...
But Ivyanne is on the land now, and there is more than one temptation vying for her heart.
And they won't take forbidden as an answer.
The Marked ones is a paranormal romance for the big girls who have always dreamed of being mermaids, and big boys who always dreamed of being with one. Set against the beautiful Great Barrier Reef, packed with drama and action and humming with sexual tension that will have you squirming, this is a modern fairytail unlike any other. Be seduced.

I just finished Everblue, by Brenda Pandos.
I got it because it was a free mermaid book on my kindle.

I'd say 4-ish stars. I really liked the underwater politics, and all the twists, the spirituality expressed by the human, Ash, and her family, and I liked the break from more adult reads, without diving too much into teen drama.
I didn't really like how the star-pitcher got the short-end of the stick, and there are some bits that are rather gruesome, but over-all, I enjoyed this book and will probably be picking up its sequels.
