View Full Version : A fish a day

Orion

I thought that inspiration for color schemes and new flukes is one of the biggest tasks for tail-makers, professional or DIYer. While some people can come up with amazing designs from thought alone, I've always found nature to be far more creative than myself. I'm gonna post a fish a day that is cool or bizarre in coloring, pattern, or shape. Perhaps some of you might be inspired for future projects.

here is the first it is a diagonal butterfly fish, a native of the red sea, Egypt3243

I like that they're darker on the top than they are on the bottom. And they look a bit like they're wearing a bandana. :>

It must be either the same or a subspecies of (what I know 'em as) "racoon butterflyfish" One of my favs from when I lived in Hawaii... that's what my Avatar is! ;)

I am still holding stead fast in that this thread will become a daily stop point for all merfolk. on that note I give you fish no. 3: the Honeycomb Cowfish and the Scrawled Cowfish. a little bit on the odd side, these natives of most of the western Atlantic and Caribbean use their patterns to blend in, on a tail these striking patterns could definitely make you stand out! Also notice the horns, you who wanted horns but thought nay now you can say YAY! 328832893290

I know its later than usual but a fish a day is a promise here is no. 4. I think you will like this one. its the Harlequin Tuskfish this native of the western pacific gets the second half of its name from the teeth it uses to feed on mollusks and crustaceans. 3309[/ATTACH[ATTACH]3310]

Where do you keep finding these, babe? I need to figure out your search methods or something...

Orion
06-11-2012, 10:47 AM
If you guys liked the last one you will love this one. Its the fairy wrasse. This is another native of the western pacific, but you can find it anywhere from Australia to Hawaii. If you like these colors or this fish, Google it, because there are countless variations. Flame colored, koi patterned the list goes on and on.33163317

Not to mention you sometimes overlook their colors, it's nice to get an appreciation for some of
the more simple fish and admire their patterns~

Another great one today mermaids and mermen. Following mermaid Aqua's blue goldfish is another blue one, the blue chromis. This is a native of the south pacific, is a great aquarium fish due to it's docile nature, and can live 8 to 15 YEARS if kept properly!

Leaving in a little bit for a wedding in Arkansas so there will have to be two fish on Sunday. Today's fish has an awesome fluke design with a very unique edging at the very end. It is the black stripe surgeonfish.

Klunzinger's Wrasse. Another Red Sea fish.

So I decided to do today's fish still on the wrasse theme.. they are all so amazing. So I'm gonna focus on one group of wrasse and post pics of a couple species since there are so many in the group and WOW are they varied!!! SO BEAUTIFUL. They are called "flashers" cause they have beautiful, colorful displays where they flash their fins and intensify their colors! Amazing!!

well, I am gonna post the next again since I wanna keep this going! I love seeing people's favorite fish!
Now, as I was looking up the wrasse that green52 posted, I found this one: it's called the African Creole Wrasse.. and I did a google on the common name and it's scientific name and there were only 2 pics I could find easily, and it's sad, cause it's cool! It immediately jumped out at me for the loooong caudal filaments (which I love ANY trailing filaments on fins...) Otherwise, I thought it seemed a bit dull, but then I noticed that it's hindparts are a dark scale (almost blackish) but the top of the first half of the fish SEEMS to be covered in highly reflective bright greenish scales that are such a nice contrast. Whatdya'll think?

yeah, I did some research on them just after you posted, and it took me to an interesting site about fish scales and the different kinds there are... which led me to the prehistoric fish like Coelecanths and lungfish... amazing things... they literally look like fossils. Amazing!

i hear that they have a sensor at the tip of their tail that involuntarily wraps around anything they touch... I think that's cute. It's like "oh poop! Darn it.. I can't get my silly tail to let go!!"

It's not involuntary, I work with H. reidi and H. hilonis. You can coax them to grab on, but they don't have to.

Not exactly a fish, but while I was on vacation at Topsail Beach in NC I found a piece of sargassum with a small warty sea anemone, about the diameter of a quarter, attached it it. In the process of showing it to my kids, the anemone decided that my hand was a far better anchor. It stayed attached to my hand for around half an hour, before I coaxed it to let go.

If you cannot buy local, you can try LiveAquaria (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/aquarium-fish-supplies.cfm?c=15+20) (I assume she has a saltwater tank). :) They do seem to have some of the regular squarebacks (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+20+90&pcatid=90) in stock. You'd need a few, as they do best in groups. Get at least one male and one female, as they have different coloration. Oh, and if you get all females, don'tbe surprised if one changes into a male - they're hermaphroditic.

Yeup, same fish. There was a lot of stress over it. People at the aquarium may not have been the smartest in their handling of that guy. I know, I got to deal with the mess. No matter the price tag you put on a fish you can usually treat them in the same way. What nearly got us was people thinking it needed extra everything. Which got rather frustrating, but he's alive and happy now on exhibit.

The plecostomus may seem boring, but on closer inspection has fins that seem to match most of our mermaid goals (and even sports the same chunky rays that we tend to use on silicone tails!) :eyepop:

I like big flukes and I cannot lie.

The Rainbow Trout seems to be everywhere, especially here in my local waters. Photos never seem to do it justice!

I apologize for the lack of posting. I've spent the last two weeks preparing art entries for a tournament and things got a bit hectic!

I'm not sure if this one has already been posted, and if it hasn't it's a shame. The Red Spotted Green Discus is a beautiful fish!

Good luck with your tournament! Let me know how it goes!
Also, that’s a beautiful fish! It’s odd; I’m having trouble figuring out where fins start and body ends. And just look at those markings on the face! 11/10, would stare at for hours.
