View Full Version : Dry Mermaid costumes?

Has anyone ever done any mer or ocean related costumes that are basically dry costumes rather
than a tail that's only meant for swimming?
Anything like sea nymphs, sirens, etc.

People are always talking about tails but what about the other things that don't necessarially
have to have bound legs?

There's quite a lot of great stuff on DA, when I get a chance I'll share :D

My tail is dry(ish), as it's open at the very bottom so I can pull it up a little and take awkward baby steps(think Morticia Addams!). Sometimes when ppl advise mers to not stand in our tails, my admittedly blunt response is "speak for yourself, my tail is MADE to be stood in". It's really not meant for serious swimming, as it was designed to be a "play" tail, meant to wear while in kiddie pools and what not, which is why my tailmaker Fin Fun now pretty much solely caters to children.

I'm pretty sure this is Photoshopped, but I like this one:

I have designs planned out based on the concept, but have yet to actually do anything with any of them. :P

Well KL I meant more like costumes where your legs aren't bound together for the most part :')
Things that are from the ocean and have an aquatic and very mermaid-y look without actually being
a mermaid.

Holy geeze Spin.. That outfit is awesome @_@
it would look amazing in the water I bet! it looks too beautiful to be real xD
But who knows, maybe it is! If so, that's the coolest dress I've ever seen!

I've always wanted to make my swimmable mermaid costume parts work for dry "legged" events, or those days I actually want to walk around without being carried in tail. Sort of like the other side of my character when she comes on land, or something. I just haven't figured out a suitable skirt/pant/shorts/dress thing to work with my legs yet.

Great finds by the way.

Here's a pretty cool video of some mermaid/nymph/siren characters that could essentially work well
as dry and wet costumes :'D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AnBBc7KQ9E

@Lorelei: I know, I'd love to make an amphibious mermaid costume that can be worn to an event and
also work well in the water. I think something like that would be great for renaissance fairs and anime
conventions and you could also take it to the pool and people would probably be less picky about it
like they might be for mermaid tails. Not to mention photo ops are a lot easier xD you don't need to
put on and take off your outfit when moving to different areas.

@Nirix: Nice job! I assume you added those little details yourself? It's a nice subtle touch :')

I did a siren costume several years ago, but it didn't quite come out the way I wanted it to. I was trying to go for the older style, when they were still considered to be half bird creatures, rather than the more mermaid-ish look they have these days.

It was a really quick outfit I threw together with my friend in a rush. We used only scrap material and an old bra. I like some of the photos we got, but I'd love to do it again with more time, effort, and planning put into it. Planning being the key word here. >>;

And I absolutely love the pictures posted so far! The bright blue one is so eye catching, and the river nymph is absolutely lovely!

Oh my gosh that reminds me of a Final Fantasy costume someone did once xD
It's some sort of summon creature that's called a siren and it's basically the ones you're talking about.

3280

I have no idea how that girl even did that costume... I envy it so much xD

I had an idea about painting scales on some blue tights and making slippers that look like fins, but it's hard to go up from there....

I've seen several people cosplaying this! I think it's from Final Fantasy 8. Not sure though.

They all look so fabulous, I'm jealous too.

As far as construction goes, it was probably time consuming, but the construction looks fairly simple. It's her execution of it that makes it so wonderful. ;) I assume the wings are made on a wire base and she's got the head feathers built into her wig. Most importantly, she has the confidence to go out in it. XD I wish I had that too.

Empires of the Deep is a 3D action-adventure fantasy film.
It is reported to be the biggest US-Chinese co-production in the history with its production budget reaching $100 million and is currently in production in Beijing under the working title Mermaid Island USA

The story revolves around an unlikely love story between a young man and a beautiful mermaid and the mermaid world which she inhabits.

also, if anyone already knows about them or anything, do you know about how much they charge for costumes? i couldnt find a general price range anywhere... but maybe i was too busy looking at all the gorgeous faeries >.>

So I've been looking up handmade costumes. I'm trying to find an idea for a costume with a bit more mobility, but it makes a statement.... Then I found this:

hmm... I think it may work. What a good idea! I may go with the oceans pollution mermaid theme!

Brianna-
Here's her store page (http://www.firefly-path.net/?page_id=881). It has some information about how to order a costume from her, though she does not list a price. My guess would be that your price range is taken into account when planning your costume.

On a side note, she looks like she worked with Traci Hines for that one photoshoot (http://www.firefly-path.net/?p=1577), which you can check out in the link. There's even a behind the scenes video :) I cannot believe I didn't pick up on it before. I'd been to this site a whole bunch when I was trying to figure out fairy wings.

I keep thinking about doing a mermaid costume that uses trash, as in the mermaid finds the trash and fashions it into her clothes..... making her a very smelly, disliked mermaid. maybe if people would dispose of their trash properly, this poor mermaid would see other things in the water to use.

Wow this thread is 6 years old but I guess it's back again.

I made this costume by using a pants pattern for jeggings and then winging it when it came to the flare of the fluke at the end. The crop top was a bra with fabric attatched to the bottom of it.
