I am making a hair clip with shells and seaweed. The only plants I could find at the pet store were silk plants  they are meant for lizards and other reptiles so I know they are strong but does anyone know how silk plants last in the water?

My mother used to have silk flowers, but they were getting dusty and she rinsed them. They didn't came out as they were anymore, as they lost some of their shape. So I guess that will also happen to them, as they will soaked. But as they are for reptiles they might be sturdier when it comes to water.

Some of the silk flowers like at michaels are not color fast, so if you get them wet they'll bleed. I don't know about yours though, seeing as it's made to be used with animals. You might have to deal with fraying as well depending on how they were made.

i would go to hobby lobby, or even meijer, and ask. I think going to hobby lobby would be best bet. Also, some of their flowers are real easy to take a part so that you can put them back together in new patterns. Also, you can coat in waterproof spray. I think seing the same stuff you use to waterproof tents, shoes, and such would work.

Pet stores carry silk plants for fish tanks. I used to have some in my old goldfish tank before I upgraded to my new goldie tank. They last quite awhile and since you wont have fish picking at them and algae growing on them im sure they will last long. But im not sure if they would hold up well in chlorine.

I went to my pet store and bought both the silk plants (that said they go in reptile tanks) and I bought some plastic ones that go in fish tanks. I think I try a bigger pet store and see if I can find more of a variation.
