View Full Version : My new tail

I have decided I am not going to make a tail out of latex or silicone. I saw the thread on Hannah Fraser's mermaid tail and I decided I wanted to make one like that. (This is just my opinion but) I think Hannah's sequin tails are so much prettier than a latex or silicone tail. Each one is very unique and the sequin shells add to the beauty. So I am currently gathering the materials and I will try to post photos of my tail making process. :D
I am getting the sequin shells (scales) from this website that was listed on the thread. http://www.ccartwright.com/shells.html
I have no idea where to get the neoprene from so any suggestions?
I am thinking of getting a mono fin to put inside but I am not sure what kind yet.
The colors of the tail will be different shades of hologram blue and green.
I am sooo excited!!!! :p

Cool! I was thinking of doing the same thing, but I'm about to move to Canada to I have to wait a while. :( . I want to do blue, green, and silver. Maybe a couple of other colors too. http://spandexworld.com/c3/catalog/search/?k=neoprin This place sells neoprene. I've never bought from them though. Good luck!

Get your neoprene from joanne fabrics. Every now and then they have a 50% off coupon so instead of paying $20 a yard, its only $10. :) That's how I got mine.

Almost all Joannes don't have neoprene. :(

Maybe check again. I'm going to look around mine again. They just rearranged all of their sections again. The scrapbooking supplies have been thinned and narrowed and the fabrics section has exploded! :D I chose to use vinyl on my first tail and they had several beautiful colors to choose from. I don't know how soon I'll make it out there (it's a few towns away), but I'll post an update if they are.

There's some info on places to buy neoprene on MerNetwork's guide to materials:
Materials and Supplies (http://mernetwork.com/index/content.php?139-Materials-and-Supplies)
Also, here are some threads where people talked about buying neoprene:
Where is the best place to order neoprene from? (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?1342-Where-is-the-best-place-to-order-neoprene-from)
Don't buy from stretchhouse.com! They ripped me off AGAIN! (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?2081-Don-t-buy-from-stretchhouse-com!-They-ripped-me-off-AGAIN!)
Found Neoprene at JoAnn Fabrics (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?238-Found-Neoprene-at-JoAnn-Fabrics)

I got mine from SpandexWorld. But it's not true neoprene, it's fabric based rather than rubber. But it'll work fine for a sequin tail!
I was actually planning to do a sequin tail after I finish the silicone tail. Does anyone have an idea of how many sequins you'd need though?

No idea. I guess I'll figure that out soon though.
