Anyone ever water-walked in a mertail?

I'd like to get into walking laps in a pool for exercise and fun, but it obviously doesn't seem like a very mermaidy thing to do. Has anyone ever water-walked in a tail before, or does anyone have any tips on how to make water-walking some how count as mermaiding?

Im sure you could get/make a fabric tail with foot holes cut in the flukes (maybe seal with velcro or something to hide) so you could wear it in the pool and walk!

I mentioned this elswhere, but when I did ice skating shows, the mermaids in Peter Pan had mermaid-ey leggings with floofy fabric fins attached at the boot of the skate. Perhaps you could do something similar?

Oceanika Merfins sells lycra leggings with scales on them! Maybe get a pair? You could even get some spandex or lycra leggings or exercise pants and paint scales on them. I know painting isn't your forte so you could just use a shaped sponge to do it. Or even commission some from someone. At that point you could have all kinds of awesome things done to them- all kinds of fins and scales and pretties!!! I'm getting excited for you just thinking about it :D You could even have some water shoes/booties painted and decorated with all kinds of mermaidy stuffs! *excited bouncing*

Not sure what you mean by making it "count as mermaiding". Mermaiding is what you make of it dear :) It's how it makes you feel! If you can't swim in a tail or don't feel comfortable with it, but you feel like a mermaid in some scaly leggings then it counts!

i know how u feel. ms kills my back and swimming can be impossible at times. if you go to joanne they have a lot of patterns for mermaid costumes u can walk in and if you google bulk acrylic nails there are a lot of places that sell nail tips cheap and some glue and your a scaled mermaid thats walkable!

As a general disclaimer though, I would say learn to water-walk first before putting on any costumes. Forgive the figure of speech, but don't jump in the deep end without knowing how to swim! Extra fabric makes extra drag, which means extra effort and more danger. As much as we as merfolk feel connected to water in some way, or even comforted by it, it is still water and it can still be dangerous. Become an expert (or at least pretty darn good) before throwing on a costume.

Only others I can think of is having kind of the other standard ways of doing a walking mermaid costume. You could have the body as a skirt and have the fluke as a train that would trail in the water. Kind of like the Miss Universe tail (http://mernetwork.com/index/showthread.php?742-Fun-%28Mer%29-Picture-from-Miss-Universe&highlight=miss+universe). Have it a skirt with a fluke that starts at the knees and the feet come out of it like Foxmoon's walking tail (http://www.merfolktails.com/Basic_Tail1.htm). Sorry if I seemed ungrateful Maple! :) As you know, I am asexual, and one reason why I was drawn to mermaids in the first place as a kid was their lack of genitals, so a two-tail doesn't quite live up to living my dream of pretending to be a truly asexual being, BUT I guess that's what imagination is for. I'm very good at over-thinking things and I bet in the water, I could suspend my belief a bit and become a beautiful asexual mermaid in my heart while wearing leggings.

No worries Kae-Leah, and yes, I do think you are reading way too much in to it. :p

You need to be able to move your legs independently to create motion so you can walk in the water. The problem with having a big, billow-y skirt like tail is that once it is wet, it will become heavy and create a lot of drag for you to work through. If you are in the shallows, it might work well. In the deep end would be much harder. It would have little shape and would most likely float up and expose your legs; if we tied the bottom closed I think you might look more like a jelly-fish!

The leggings create less drag, and when you put your legs together they're supposed to look like a tail.

The leggings are a stepping-stone - once you are great at water walking with two legs, then try with your legs together, and then you can end up in your purple tail doing a modified walk which would work in deep water. Not so great in shallow since you don't want to ever stand on your fluke!

No matter what you wear honey, you will always be a gorgeous, proud asexual mermaid :)
