Ok guys I have made quite a few mermaid accessories and wanted to share a few previews so you can see my work and if any of you like. I need money for my new mermaid tail and I thought this would be a good way to help me get it. I look at this as a fundraiser to help your fellow mer-sister get her new silicone tail. I will only be selling to people in the US because it is difficult for me to ship out of the country with customs and extra shipping charges that I know nothing about so I sincerely apologize about that. So if any of you like my work and are interested then comment below and let me know because the more responses I get the more motivated I become to make items for you guys. I don't know exactly when I'll open my Etsy but hopefully soon. I need to collect boxes for shipping that I'm getting free from my boyfriends job as they become available. So far I only have 2. I will be using mostly small boxes because most of my items aren't small enough for cardboard jewelry boxes inside padded envelopes. I do have a few things that are small enough but most aren't. I prefer to put my items inside something that will protect them from damage because I'm paranoid about items getting broken during shipping. Just a precaution. Wow I just got thrown a curve ball. I thought my items were good but haven't gotten any feedback whatsoever. What a way to shoot down my confidence. Was hoping to log in to see a ton of responses but seeing 0 makes me feel like "why did I even do this stupid idea". I spent $250 of my tail money for supplies for nothing. My mom was right. She told me this would never amount to anything and nobody is going to care about any of this stuff. Spending hours making them is just a waste. She put this idea down so bad that she made me cry and made me feel foolish. I told her she was wrong and to prove it I took a major leap to post some pix on here to see all the responses so I could show her how wrong she was but now shes just snickering in my face as to how right she was. Sad thing is I can't wear any of the earrings with fish hooks because I don't have pierced ears. Good thing I found this out before I bought and started making regular jewelry for non-mers. Might as well face it I have no talent in anything. Thought this was my hidden talent and proof I am a real mer after all. What was I thinking....my tail is just going to stay in the distant future because this fundraiser was an epic failure.

let me explain something to you, if you feel passionate about it, dont let others get you down.. if you allow that you will amount to nothing, you stay strong. You dont have to prove anything to ANYONE but yourself. Open your etsy shop and of course adverstize like crazy everywhere.

Your tail will get to you soon, patience is what you need and time.. nothing is ever given to you immediately, heck ittook me 6 months to have a tail drawn up and another 4 months to get it made..so dont worry its all going to be fine.

RIGHT.) to shoot down your dreams. ive had people in my family laugh at me for wanting to be a mermaid, and its really hurtful. the only person who really supports me is my boyfriend. everyone else just thinks its silly, or that it isnt realistic because its a dream. they dont realize how much it honestly bothers me that they dont really fully believe in me.

Thanks guys for the encouragement. 25 people had viewed this post but didn't leave any feedback so I just figured they weren't good enough to trigger a response. I need help getting money but I want to Earn the money I make. I like for people to get something in return for their generosity which is why I'm doing this to make some extra cash. I'm not a well known mermaid who gets in papers and on tv or anything so I wouldn't feel right getting donations. I could become a well known mer in my community with one visit to the public pool and going to my local zoo but I have embarrassment issues. I stick to my pool and work with my neighborhood kids and doing birthday parties for people I know to keep the anxiety to a minimum. I wish I wasn't so self-conscious to hold me back but I am but I try to share my mermaid dream with kids in some way. And my boyfriend and best friends are the only ones supporting me on this too. My mom and other people think it's stupid that I'm thinking about selling mermaid items because they don't believe theres that many mermaids out there. They think it's just a few people. They don't believe me when I tell them theres a lot more out there than they know! When my mom walks in and sees me diligently working so hard on these things she shakes her head at me and says I don't know why you are wasting all that effort for nothing. I tell her I'm not wasting my effort because there's gotta be someone who's willing to buy it from me. She just says oh well you'll see when you open that shop and nothing sells. I know theres been a few items I've made that I wanted haha I had to make a "twin" of the item so I could sell (that barrette picture at the top is one of them). I figured if I can't resist some of these things that I have to make another then there's gotta be someone willing to take it too. Theres not exactly a lot of accessory makers out there thats selling because I looked. Thats why I think I would be successful at this. One of my best friends came over to see some of what I've done and she couldn't believe how great they were that she said if she were a mermaid she would buy some. I do have a lot more things like a flower clip and flower earrings that would match the clip that are so cute I think for example. I just listed 3 pictures to give everyone an idea what kind of work I do so I'm not all talk. Samantha-No I haven't made tiaras. I think those are outside my expertise unfortunately but I was thinking about trying to make some wreaths which could pose as a crown since they do sit on your head the same way. Haven't gotten the supplies for that yet nor attempted but will try. I have made halos that sit on your head for angels (halloween costume) before so I think its the same concept. I already have the idea mapped out on how I'm going to do it. Hope it turns out the way I plan.

As far as how much for everything I have no idea yet. I don't know what people are willing to pay and don't want to over charge :/ Kinda stumped on that. I've never sold things before so I'm new to this. My best friend asked me when she came over once I get the money for my tail will I still make things to sell if theres a high demand? I told her I think I would if its a huge success. I won't be in it for the money then once I have my tail but I would be in it for helping out fellow mers who don't know how to make accessories or don't want to. Its becoming a fun hobby to keep me busy when I'm bored. :)

i think the cost depends on how much the stuff to make the jewelry is. you would probably take the cost of everything to make, say, the necklace, and x2, or mabe x1.5, depending i guess, and then add however much labor is (whatever you think that should cost).
so, if the materials for it are $5, youd make that $10. then, say you think you should charge $5 per hour of labor. it takes you an hour to make whatever it is. add $5.
boom, $15.

at least, thats how i would do it. im not sure how other people work all that out...
all those numbers are just examples, idk how much you spent for that stuff haha. but it really is gorgeous, and if you decide to make an etsy for that stuff, you should definitely post it here, because i would totally check it out, and im sure other mers will too :D

The jewelry is gorgeous! Definitely keep it up, I bet it could sell. And if you make some more everyday items, you could wear it with your normal clothes too :D

And a thing about the forum is a lot of people view the forum who don't have accounts. And I mean, like normally it's double the members online. On the main forum page, you can see it at the bottom! So yes, 25 people may have viewed it but didn't have the accounts to leave a comment. On top of that, members on the site tend to come in random droves. I've posted stuff and gotten very few responses then it like explodes in a few hours. We have so many international members, night owls, etc. it gets crazy. Also it takes a bit of time for a post to get on it's feet since people tend to check their own posts and posts they've replied to first. No worries, just cause no one responds doesn't mean no one cares or no one supports you. It probably just means no one's gotten around to it yet or it got buried. Like I posted a hairstyle in the makeup section that got buried so fast there were no replies. It happens, and probably too often.

Don't let your mom shoot you down! My parents used to like extremely disapprove of me dancing. Now they're still grumbling, or at least my dad is, but I kept going and got better and rose in status and technique. Mermaiding they took with a look of "you're weird" but they kind have already labeled me weird in their mind so they just grudgingly accept it. You just need to get to that point. YOU know that mermaiding is more common, and the media is starting to as well. Keep going, and if you're passionate about it, she'll accept it. And if all else fails, tell her at least you're not spending the time and money doing drugs :) (Haha my dentist assistant told me that once)

I don't think the price per hour would work too well seeing as some of the items took 3-5 hours to make. That hair barrette I posted above took 4 hours to make (gotta wait for glue to dry enough so nothing moves out of place) and that necklace took 3 hours. Those things tended to be a little more complicated to put together. I was thinking about going by the size and detail. Maybe the necklace above would go for $15? Other necklaces $10? Earrings $5-$8 depending on size? When I make wreaths $15-$20? When I make belts and sashes $20-$40 sashes being the higher one because they are bigger. I spent a crap load of money on the supplies already and as I speak I'm ordering more supplies online adding up to $94.11. I'm hoping my shop takes off and I get my tail money fast and I can prove to my mom I can do this and make money successfully. Right now I'm starting with mermaid accessories but will eventually move up to regular jewelry and hair items too. Trying to get a handle on things first and figure out this selling business too. I have my worries too about things getting broken during shipping and getting bad reviews for some odd reason you know. I am making my items as durable as I can. Scared to test them in water (glued things). I used E6000 though.

hun, what you did by taking that big leap and trying to prove your mom wrong is the exact attitude a mermaid needs to make it big in this industry. My dad told me no one would ever want to hire a mermaid here. News Flash dad, Duluth is a nautical themed city. Like hell no one would hire me. So to prove him wrong i've started selling etched glass, I started a fundraising campaign, and I've been saving like crazy. And even though he continues to snicker behind my back, I continue to work to prove him wrong. You're doing the right thing.
Sometimes posts don't get noticed right away, or even for a while. You just gotta hold your head high and say "It won't stop me."

Would anyone be interested in clip on earrings for sale? I'm a mermaid without pierced ears and noticed there are no mermaid clip ons out there. Didn't know if there's anyone else like me who could use some. I've made a pair for myself and I have another pair I'm willing to let go of. If not I'll keep those too :P I didn't want to make a bunch and have no one buy them because I won't have use for so many pairs.

I say a good $20-25 bucks for the necklace isint a bad price at all, as for belts $20-45 bucks depending on details and such, the more details, the more expensive of course, earrings can be anywhere from $10-15 dollars.. you can also do sets like earrings and necklaces sets for a set price sae with belts and necklaces too. im actually looking for a nice netted belt.

Wow you really think so? I didn't know if people would pay that. I don't want to rip anyone off. My best friend said those same prices because she actually watched me put a few things together (those earrings above and another necklace) and thought for all the work put into them and the detail in some items like the necklace above that makes them more valuable. Some of the ideas I came up with and created I literally dreamed them and woke up from my sleep and made them before going back to bed. I didn't want to forget them. I made two of those necklaces above slightly different (shells). I'm going out of town the 7th-10th so I won't be able to work on anything those days (dang) but hopefully my ordered supplies will come in the mail while I'm gone so when I return I can get started on more items. Got some supplies for wreaths/crowns. Need to attempt a belt/sash too. I'm hoping to get more shipping supplies soon too (boxes). I only get them as they become available since I'm getting them free. Costs a lot of extra money to order empty boxes. Thats the main thing keeping me from opening my shop. Hoping by next month I'll have enough boxes for all the items. Is your photoshoot really soon or next month sometime? Might be able to work something out to get the things sent to you before then (before I open my shop). I'll get to work on a belt soon too. I will be making them for the hips which my hips are 34". Gotta figure out how I'm going to design it. Thats always the hard part...how to cut the netting.

I've started on the belt making process. I'm starting small and working up to bigger sashes. When I say I'm going to be working on something soon I really mean it lol. I hit the ocean swimming on this! I already cut out the first belt. This belt I'm starting with fits me perfectly around my hips (which are 34" around). When I have the belt tied around my hips there's 9" hanging down left over. Tomorrow I plan to cut out a few more belts using that one as a guide template. Let me know if I need to make the other belts bigger to fit bigger hips than mine or smaller (a certain amount of inches to add or take away would help to make sure it will fit). I would assume that if your hip size is 32"-36" this particular belt should fit nicely. I also plan to decorate the first one at least. Already picked out what shells and greenery I am going to use on it and arranged it the way I wanted and took a picture so I can recreate it. Looked nice! I would wear it. With all the responses I am extremely encouraged now to work up to the bigger things. I only plan to decorate one now because on the others I want to use the new shells I ordered earlier.

Sweetie, your pieces are beautiful! I was one of the 25 who saw when you posted your topic, but didn't have a chance to reply since I was running late for my internship. I post new threads/posts all the time (I think I have the 3rd most posts on the forum?) and a lot of them don't get responses or feedback. Some of it might have to do with server problems, or just the time of day you're posting (I'm on a 12 hour difference from the majority of users in America right now since I'm on travel), or maybe people want to think of their answers a bit more before responding.

I think you should continue to make more accessories and to keep at it. You certainly seem to have the talent. Shame on your mother for not recognizing this! She sounds bitter. I have no doubt you'll be able to meet your tail fund goals very soon. :)

Also just some friendly advice - it might help to make your posts a little more readable if they were more spaced out. Wall-of-texts are quite daunting.

keep in mind that any bot that views your page counts as a view (we usually have anywhere from 5-10 you can view the list under what members and guests are doing) and my time you uploaded this in the middle of the night- so keep in mind when people dont post right away it's got to do with time zones. We have a LOT of lurkers- people who NEVER post. So you shouldnt assume 25 members read your entire thread and chose not to say anything. The views aren't accurate or representative. Lots of threads only get a few posted replies, the ones that get more tend to be the ones frequently adding more to the thread by the owner. Im sure as you continue to make things and post them here you'll get lots of activity. Try not to melt down and rag on yourself, I know what it's like to have mom issues (I have an abusive mom who isnt in my life) but you cant melt down like that everytime things to go the way you expect, it simply becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy where you say to yourself you're going to do bad, so you do bad! Try to think positive and keep busy. Dont let your mother define who you are, my parents STILL look at me like I have 10 heads despite all my success as a mermaid. Your mom may NEVER get it, and you have to accept that to be able to move on and do your thing.

Im sorry if I come off harsh, but if you really wanna make it being a mer or making jewelery etc you need to have self confidence. The first step to doing that is NOT putting yourself down and over analysing meaningless things like the views on a thread! Think strong, positive, and visualize where you see yourself but recognize it doesnt happen over night. <3

I did post in the middle of the night but I checked again the next night. I figured I would give it a full day. After those offers made I showed my mom and showed her my items and she said wow maybe you will get somewhere with this. I told her its for my tail fund. She accepts it more that she actually sees real offers by real people. She's being more supportive now so I guess all she had to see was someone else offer an amount on their own free will. She figured if anyone would buy it would only be a few dollars. Gives me a little more confidence to have her support. I have like 14 things already made so far. Can't wait to start on the belt. I wouldn't know what to make for mermen. Don't have any ideas for that.

I noticed that you seemed to really get devastated when nobody responded after you waited on it... it takes a LONG time sometimes for people to discover a thread. Sometimes they'll be a bust. That doesn't mean your stuff is bad! Don't jump to conclusions like that - I only say that because you just seemed so crushed. I'm sorry that it seemed like nobody liked your things, because that is definitely not the case! You've got to believe in your art - and yourself! And maybe you should show your mom this thread again...not for bragging or angry reasons but to tell her that it's not okay to bring you down like that. Seems like she was really disrespecting you and the things that are important to you. :(

Have you put your items online to sell yet? I would love to have a look at them all! And don't be discouraged if a lot of people don't flock to them right away. Like on here it can take a while for people to notice things. I had to wait a long time to get any sales on my Etsy account. I'm going to put up a few things of my own soon, but I know it's going to be a while before anybody takes any interest, sadly - although I know they look good. Anyway, good luck!

I just got around to this thread! I swear I opened it a at least 6 times and kept on getting side tracked :P I love your style though! Those are pretty and quite sellable!

For pricing my advice would be to keep track of all of your expenses and and find out how much the item actually cost to make. Then decide how much you think your time is worth and pay that per hour. However that is not how long it takes to make it, including glue drying and all that other stuff. That is if you are doing constant hands on work how long does it take. Some people keep a log if they work on things a few minutes at a time or if they take breaks for glue drying and such. Or you can just make it 1 1/2 or 2 times the base expense. Just know that price puts a lot of people off of buying stuff these days because they too are trying to save for tails and such :/ Honest truth. I can't tell you how many times I went to buy something in someone's shop and decided I just couldn't pay that much for something, especially when If I REALLY wanted to I could make it myself and I have a good idea on how much the materials will cost. Then again I'm a bargain shopper! Once you get yourself established you can run discounts/sales now and then and that can help pump up your sales! Just be sure to advertize!

I'd say $8-$10 for the earrings, $10-$12 for the hair clip, $15-$17 for the necklace. I wouldn't go above $30 for a belt unless you really jazz that thing up with a lot of stuff. I personally completely put belts out of mind from other people usually because they're just priced too high for some netting and some shells and stuff hanging off of it. People say start off high price wise because you can always lower them, but I really think that's backward thinking. High prices will put people off, and you want to kick start things, not get them moving at a crawl! And you CAN raise prices, it's happening all over with everything else including milk, why would people expect hand made items not to? Not trying to be harsh at all, just giving my personal perspective hoping it will help you in the big picture :)

I'm really glad I have support and tips from my mer family here. I do have hair combs but haven't gotten to those yet. If I had all the shipping boxes I would open now. I don't wanna spend a bunch of money on small 9x6 boxes. Trying to get my hands on free ones but that size is hard to come by. The other price I'm not sure about is shipping. For that size box I'm not sure what USPS charges. Some things I can use padded envelopes which I can charge 3.50 for shipping but not sure about a box maybe $5 or is that not enough. Belts and large necklaces and some hair clips need to go in a box so they don't get crushed in an envelope. The netting I get is 3x5' for $5.99. The shells I get in small packages for like $7.99. I really do take 3-4 hours doing most of these things mainly because I'm such a perfectionist and change some things if I dont like something about it. Good thing for the buyer bad for me. I'm kinda OCD. So far I've spent around $400 in supplies. I do really enjoy this. New hobby. I don't know about commission work because I'm afraid I wont meet someone's standards and won't be fast enough. I'm considering a Facebook page for my etsy so buyers can post pics of them wearing my stuff and see things I've made in the past that already sold and see things made not listed in etsy yet. If anyone has tips as to how I can get small boxes fast then I can open sooner

I'm going to make a head wreath. I'm so tired from that long trip I'm taking a little longer to get back in the groove of things. Haven't been feeling well either. Got the supplies in the mail. I've been making clip on earrings that are nice and they are light weight too if you're interested. I made some dangling ones for myself but can try to make some more to sell. I've gotten a few more boxes too. Still gotta put together that belt!. Once its done ill post its picture and ill post a picture of my clip on earrings and another pair I plan to sell. If anyone likes my clip ons I can make another pair similar. Might have to use different shells since I don't have cone shells that are the same size to match but that's ok.

Ok guys I just finished my first belt project and it turned out perfect! It took me a total of 4 hours to make. I started at 3pm and just finish a few minutes ago and no I didn't take any breaks. I also have blisters trying to form on my fingers from griping the pliers and wire cutters. Ouch. The belt is 59" long and on both ends I left 15" of free net without anything on it to tie. It fits me perfectly and as I said my hips are 34" around. So anyone my size would be perfect.

For those of you requesting crowns I have good news. I have sketched a crown idea I came up with out of the blue. The problem I had was I didn't know how I would put it together but I think I worked that out. I will make a prototype and see how it works out and if it does I will be making crowns too. My skill keeps expanding. Don't know if it will work out but I hope it does. Hope y'all are liking my newest creations that I posted pix of. I hope to list my first set of items after the first week of august when I return from Vegas and southern California. Collected several more boxes.

This is the Mermaid Belt/Sash I made for myself aka the prototype. Posting pix so you guys can see how it turned out. I tie it on the side of my hip and let it hang down the other side that way I don't sit on any shells and crush them. They hang on the side of my leg not over my butt.

Thanks and I saw. That lifted my spirits to get some more likes :) I hope this etsy idea takes off for me. What would really be a bummer for me is after making all that stuff and it doesn't sell. A lot of it I can't wear either. I made a lot of earrings and I don't have pierced ears so I chanced that one! Keep spreading the word around about my shop FB so I can get some comments on items people want because I'm stumped as to what to list first. Was hoping to list the popular things first so I have some fast sales instead of listing some things that will sit there for months. i think your etsy will do just fine. also, what you can do is, after your beginning supply runs out, just make them as theyre ordered, that way you dont make a bunch you dont sell (even though i think you will sell a bunch anyways, its all GORGEOUS) and lose money in the process.
