For those of you who swim in the ocean.....

What sea creatures do you fear most and how do you deal with them? I am afraid of sharks, jellyfish, basically anything with teeth or that is poisonous. I'm also afraid of horseshoe crabs. :doh: Whenever we go swimming in the ocean, I just know they're there lol. I was the first to discover them with a terrible pinch in the foot. And later again. And again. And again. And again. All in the same day. Every reaction: Ahhhh! I think my toe is gone!! Good thing it's not lol. And you ask, how do I deal with them? I try to not let my feet touch the sand. For sharks? I try not to think about that. More people are die from falling cocunuts than shark attacks every year. So that shows how little of a chance you are to get attacked. However, I'd rather die a cocunut related death than shark. So what are your thoughts on this?

where I live the ocean is really cold. I only have to worry about jellies and wolf fish. I have been bitten before by a wolf fish but didnt feel it as my legs were so numb from the cold. It wasnt til it swam away and I got out to see two fang marks on my leg!

Oh my gosh just looked up a picture of a wolf fish. Those things are creepy! At least you didn't feel it. Where I'm going the ocean will be really cold. I probobly won't be able to swim in it until the middle/end of summer.....with a full body wetsuit.

Horseshoe crabs are easy to handle you pick them up from the front of the "bowl" and move them over- their claws are short and for the record the ones with actual claws are female, the ones with what looks like a boxing glove are male, i use to work a touch pool so we had to work with the large ones all day, sometimes shuffling your feet helps as well.


Personally I use always watershoes. I have a thing about having my feet touched. I really dont fear the ocean , i respect the animals but im not afraid of them. Maybe jellyfish.. but all we got are moon jellys here and they dont really sting..

In puerto rico however I swam in a lagoon and there were a huge group of "blue bottles" (portuguese man of war) in the channel. Those might be the only thing that actually evoke fear in me. I didint noticed them till my dad picked on up on the beach with a stick, the moment i noticed it, i called everyone out the water the moment i saw them in the channel..lol im a self appointed life guard apparently..

As for sharks, well dont wear bright colors like red orange or yellow, try not to splash as much and dont swim late.. always keep a keen eye around your area.. Dont swim near small fish groups.. well thats what i know. You have to remember anytime you enter the ocean your entering their home, attacks are rare but can happen. If god forbid you ever see yourself between a shark as my Dive master would say- "remember punch the nose, top of head and pull the gills and poke the eyes he'll leave you alone .. "

I can never see the horseshoe crabs, because I could never see through the water. Plus, with all of the crashing waves, I really woudn't want to touch one. xD Good for you, on telling everyone to get out of the water. That could have been a really bad situation. With the sharks on bright colors, well mermaid tails in all colors of the rainbow are not going to help. I'd probobly be under the water, not splashing. I think it would be kind of hard to punch the shark in any of those places if you are being attacked. And even by then you might have lost a limb. I need to stop watching shark horror movies. xD

My aunt once stepped on the barb of a stingray in a small tide pool that had just formed. She had to go to the emergency room and get stitches all on the bottom of her foot. It was really bad! But I'm not really scared of stingrays, I'm just VERY cautious when I'm in tide pools or rivers and inlets. I constantly am stingray shuffling my feet.

But for me, I guess my biggest fear is sharks. We have quite a few bull shark attacks at my beaches and even more nips and small bites. It's pretty common to hear that someone was bit or nipped by a shark if they're in shoulder deep water here. So obviously that freaks me out...

I also have a fear that ties in with my sharks. I'm terrified I'll be in my tail one day in the ocean and I'll get caught in a rip current. Then I'll be so far out that I can't swim back or I bump into a shark. >< I was caught in a rip current when I was a kid on my boogey board. It was so scary! I didn't want to get off my board because I thought I was too small against the current. Thankfully an older lady came out and tugged me back to where I could touch the bottom again!

It isn't so much the ocean but in lakes I freak out it someone said there are leeches. Leeches and tick scare the living heck out of me.

I'm not near the ocean....but i will have the gulf of mexico in texas-which obviously nobody wants to get in the water there- and here i have lake ontario 20 minutes away, black river 3 minutes away, and waterfalls surrounding me from 15 minutes to forever thru the adirondacks. The currents in the river are bad and unpredictable, but i scope my spots very carefully before going there. i'm more grossed out by algae trying to get into the river...or the thought of leeches. and i cant stand beind anywhere that i cant see through the water. i have a huge fear of not knowing wat could be under me coming up to bite. *shudders*

If it helps with the jelly fears, you could get a jelly sting remedy and keep it in whatever bag or the like that you have at the beach with you. You can see a ton of remedies on Amazon.

There's also a jelly sting protective lotion, but I don't know how well they work- you might find reviews online. Of course, always check to make sure the ingredients aren't anything you might be allergic to.

As for anything else... it's been far too long since I swam in the ocean, but while sharks make me nervous (thank you very much to my 7 year old self for watching Jaws when I wasn't supposed to... I know so much about them, but it doesn't help a lot... haha) I'm far more concerned about rip currents.

Up in the Northeastern coast of the US I would say there isn't much danger from sharks. If it bothers you very much, just make sure you are always close to a buoy or other structures. In shallow water I once ran on a poor horsehoe crab and got a deep gash in my foot from the top of the shell, but I'd say wearing water shoes if you know it's close to when they wash up on the beach will prevent them from snapping at/hurting your feet. Also, not running would probably help. xD

And you don't need to worry much about jellyfish. If the water is unseasonably warm, they might come in a bit early. I've only ran into a stinging jellyfish once (face first), and though I didn't see many details, it wasn't a really dangerous one and the sting didn't hurt that bad. I haven't any advice for riptides that wasn't in the videos.

And that's just what I know from the Northeastern Coast, it's different for everyplace.

A year or two ago at the beach I stepped on a stingray...it was VERY strange. I screamed and quickly ran, only turning around to watch it fumble back into the deeper water (was probably an inch or two where I was on the shore). I was really lucky I stepped on it's back. o_o

Anything that just so happens to be prickly, really. ;) There aren't many dangerous creatures in the sea near me, and so the most worrying thing I have to face is a sharp shell or two.
That would probably make the sea near me all the more inviting to swim in, if it weren't for the fact it's so cold!

Jellyfish are the only things you really need to worry about near me, but Llike oceanic story I cant swim in it cos its too cold! I stood on a sea urchin once whilst swimming in turkey and that hurt loads

Stingrays - I'm fine once I'm in the water, but standing on one really worries me. I know shark attacks are extremely rare, but stingray (I won't call them attacks!) incidents do happen. Freaked out one time when there were orca around my kayak in the harbor but that was just because they were so big!

Horseshoe crabs are the only surviving relatives of the trilobite. As a kid, I was fascinated by marine paleontology in general and trilobites in particular. I wanted one as a pet.
